After recent talks with the vice captains, coach and myself captain we are very serious about getting things right this summer and the new season. There has been too many seasons of not turning up to training, late for match days and most important not winning the rugby, so briefly this is whats happening.
The club will be getting more strict and more serious from here on in with hope that every player and other teams will take us serious.
thank you eveyone and see you all at training, i hope eveyone is looking forward to the 07/08 season as much as i am!!!!!!!

Guys here we are again summer training, this at the moment is on a sat afternoon 2-4, the training is great cv work and is brilliant to at keeping the lads together over the summer we also have alot of fun, so for those who havnt been up on a sat yet get up there and be part of the team over the summer, and for those who have been up there working hard keep at it and start pestering the rest of the team.
There are a few changes in the club and the team is goin to require more commitment from every player this season if we are goin to go places and do well, we definately have the players and the potential to do so.
Start using this message board to say anything to help the team go forward. cheers matt.

Another excellent event, where I was really proud of the way the lads played and the display of some excellent team and indivdual skills. Well done also to Paul for drinking 3 or 4 pints in 1 due to the golf ball and then keeping down none of them.
I think the games and fun that were had bode well for the end of season tour - work to be done in the league before that time though!

What an evening! The food, beer and atmosphere were brilliant.
I would just like to thank Damon and the Moulder clan for catering etc and the quiz, the effort put in by everyone to clean up and clear away and the referee ('no I can't stay for another I must get back - oh go on then!') for getting the laws quiz answers wrong as usual!! It was an absolutely fantastic evening and a benchmark for the future.

As I now bow out of regular coaching due to job committments, I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone that welcomed me and made the coaching job as easy as it was. Please give Damon the same support you gave me and good luck for the future - keep the momentum going and the players will continue to sign up and the Club will achieve the success it richly deserves!
I'll come back to the Club as often as I can to support.
    All the Best

  • Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage - In force from 1st Jan 2007 -- Rich Belli, 19:06:11 12/12/06 Tue
    IRB MEDIA RELEASE
    IRB Announces Scrum Initiatives
    17 NOVEMBER 2006

The IRB Council has approved a change to the Law that governs the scrum. This follows a review of the scrum by the IRB Rugby Committee and its Law Project Group following recommendations made by the IRB' s Medical Committee. The Law change will see the implementation of a four stage "crouch, touch, pause, engage" sequence for the initial scrum engagement at all levels of the Game from January 1,2007.

"An essential element of rugby is its physicality. This has to be appropriately balanced with the welfare of participating players and the IRB continues to take such issues very seriously. As the world's governing body we review all aspects ofthe Game and where appropriate consult with relevant experts," said IRB Chairman Dr Syd Millar.
"The IRB believes that the contested scrum is an integral part of the Game and that Rugby is unique in that its playing charter provides the opportunity for individuals of all shapes and sizes to play the Game. That said, we have taken expert medical and technical advice that indicates that it is now appropriate for the Game to adopt a less vigorous scrum engagement sequence," added Dr Millar.
Although various aspects of the scrum were considered by the Law Project Group (LPG), two key areas were reviewed. The first was information from the IRB Medical Advisory Committee on the engagement, and the second was the biomechanical processes involved in the scrum.
Issues with the scrum were identified and a number of corrective measures were discussed. It became clear that the gap between the two teams at engagement needed to be better quantified to prevent practices such as charging and this has led to the Law change in the scrum.
Three recommendations of the LPG have been approved by Council:
    1. The new Law to be applied for the serum engagement will be: The referee will call "crouch" then "touch". The front rows crouch and using their outside arm each prop touches the point of the opposing prop's outside shoulder. The props then withdraw their arms. The referee will then call "pause". Following a pause the referee will then call "engage". The front rows may then engage. The "engage" call is not a command but an indication that the front rows may come together when ready. This is a change to Law 20.1(h). Presently law 20.1 (h) stipulates a "crouch, pause, engage" sequence.
    2. The scrum must be stationary and the middle line of the scrum must be parallel to the goal lines. A team must not shove the scrum away from the mark before the ball is thrown in. This reinforces current Law 20.1(k).
    3. The front rows must crouch so that when they meet, each player's head and shoulders are no lower than their hips. This will ensure that both front rows are at as suitable horizontal height. This reinforces current Law 20.1(g).
The Law change will come into effect on January 1,2007 with recommendations 2 and 3 coming into effect concurrently.
"This new engagement sequence will standardise the distance the two sets of forwards are apart, reduce the collision at engagement and will assist in ensuring that both sets of forwards are at the best horizontal height possible. This is crucial to the successful engagement of the serum," said the world's most capped front row forward, Englishman Jason Leonard who has assisted the Law Project Group in its review of the scrum.
"With the reduced impact and forwards at the correct height we will see an associated improvement in the bind. This should also assist in minimising collapsing of the front row. It also ensures that the scrum remains a true contest which is important for the Game. It in no way impairs both teams ability to contest for the ball," added Leonard.
In light of the Law change the IRB Council has requested IRB management to review and further develop its educational and technical programmes for the scrum. This review will include consideration of the suitability of various Member Union initiatives such as coach and referee education programmes and other relevant policies. Council noted the recent success of policies adopted in Unions such as NZ and France around educational initiatives.
"We see comprehensive educational and technical training programmes, allied with sound research that seeks to increase understanding of the biomechanics and injury risks involved in the scrum as the way forward," said New Zealand Rugby Union Manager of Research and Injury Prevention Ken Quarrie.
The IRB, in accordance with the newly adopted Injury Definition Protocol that is contained within a new IRB Medical Plan, is committed to further study of the biomechanics of the scrum, including the wheel, and the collation of data on all injuries in the Game. This Law change will also go hand in hand with the zero tolerance policy on crooked feeds to the scrum that will come into effect on January 1,2007.

  • Progression -- Stuwie, 16:27:24 12/04/06 Mon
Dispite the extremely dissapointing final result, we should be encouraged in the fact that the bar has been raised. Wheras last season, over 40 pointes were conceded in each game against Victoria, these are now games we believe should be won. A narrow defeat is not good enough any more! To have concede only 1 try in our last 3 games says an awful lot about our defence, but to have lost all of those says even more about the lack of discipline in our individual decision making.

It's now time to progress even further!

Thumbs up for the effort on the pitch, lets now work on our errors on the training pitch and realise our potential!

  • I received the following message from Plym Vic's Secretary -- Rich Belli, 22:57:03 11/14/06 Tue
    Dear Club Secretary,

One of our players, Daryl 'Brum' Thatcher, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in August. He had played for us for over 10 years. He was in the Navy and also played for his ship's side. In order to honour his memory and to raise some money for his widow and 3 children, we are going to play a match against his ship's side at the Rectory on the evening of Monday 20th November.
All are very welcome to attend, anyone who knew him or would like to support the cause is invited.
In order to raise money, we have invited sponsors to buy the kits for the match and on conclusion the players will buy their shirts. There is also to be a raffle and an auction. As players move around clubs and many of the men he had served with have changed ship, the two sides will be named; "Brum's Civi XV" and "Brum's Navy XV". Paul Dickinson (Landlord of the Sir Joshua Reynolds in Plympton) has paid for one kit. The other has been funded by Going Places Nursery and A Stephens Plumbing.

    Many thanks,

    Alan Dibble

    Honorary Secretary Plympton Victoria RFC

  • Player and Team Development -- Sully, 10:26:44 09/17/06 Sun
Pick yourselves up from the performance on Saturday. The big thing we need to achieve is the spark; to be sharper to react, more aggressive in contact(in a controlled way) and quicker to the breakdown so releasing the ball quicker to the backs.
Totnes away - all those who couldn't make it on Saturday try to clear your diaries for the first league game of the season lets start the league as we mean to go on.

On an aside, I didn't manage to speak to many as quite a few had to shoot off after the game. The U8/U9/U10 junior sides are in desperate need of coaches. They coach on a Sunday 9-10am and play 12 a-side (I think). U8/U9 play tag but are coached a little bit of contact, the U10s play contact but unopposed scrums. Even if there are people willing to take a session every now and then, something is better than nothing. I would be very grateful if we are able to grab this opportunity to pass our accrued knowledge of the game onto the youngsters coming up. Anyone willing to put themselves out every now and then to help please contact me or any of the junior coaches. Even once will help - you never know you might even enjoy it!

Well done to all for the first games of the new season; 2 wins and many lessons learned. It is always difficult to get some decent structure when playing trial games, but I thought the commitment and effort was commendable. We definitely need to work on some key areas, so arrival at the ground by 1PM is essential for us to achieve this. This is our first cup game of the season, what more motivation do you need? See you Saturday.

  • Training -- Sully, 10:49:00 08/31/06 Thu
Great to see so many there on Tuesday, thank you. It gave us a fantastic opportunity to work hard on rucking and also to develop the lineout and movement within the backs. Tuesday is our first day of reckoning. Could everyone turn up as early as possible get changed and start doing their own individual warm ups. You know where your niggles are and targetting those first will allow you to get maximum benefit out of the prematch warm up. I would like to continue drilling the backs movement/lineout/phase play prior to the game too if we have time.
The beginning of the season is here, see you all Tuesday.

  • Training/Trial Games -- Sully, 12:21:03 08/24/06 Thu
    Guys
Coming up is the last Tuesday training session before we have an opposed game - it comes back around quickly! I would like to thank all those that have turned up over the summer and would also like to encourage those that are hiding in the background. TAKE A DEEP BREATH, GET YOUR BOOTS OUT AND GET INVOLVED AGAIN - you know you want to and you are always welcome!

I would like to be able to go through fwd set pieces, the backs to practise some basic moves and then bring it together into an unopposed game so we can develop the running angles of everyone. Depending upon who turns up, obviously depends upon how much of this we can do. I will also go over rucking, which should leave us in a reasonable state for the first trial game. A big effort for a good turn out please.
    Sully

iN 1987/8 the clubs centenary year, the junior section was started up again by Roger Arthur, this side developed all the way to Colts and some of the former players remain with the club today. Nigel Pinder was No.8, Iam Gtiffiths second row and Lee McDowell, flanker.
This Colts side defeated some major scalps including Brixham. They played away to Wasps, which included a young flanker called Lawrence De something (lol). Sadly it came to an end when Roger had to go to the Middle East for work. I have his Email if anyone wants it!

  • Plymouth Argaum...20 St Columba...6 -- rb, 22:43:06 09/26/05 Mon
    Evening Herald Report
FIERCE defending by Argaum held off St Columba and with Oakley only slotting one of their penalty chances, Saints trailed 13-3 at half time having been held up over the Argaum line.

Centre Ben Devonport put Tigers in front with a penalty, but missed converting his own try.

Shortly before half time, however, Devonport made amends as Argaum took a ball against the head, flanker Matt Blakestone touched down from the rolling maul.

Fly-half Dave Oakley opened the second period for Columba with his second three points.

The only breach in either defence came from fly-half Darren Wills whose strong darting run found the gaps for Argaum's first win of the season.

  • Topsham v Argaum -- Stuwie, 12:18:36 09/11/05 Sun
    10-09-05

    Team:

    1 R Belli
    2 T Liberson
    3 C Davison
    4 J Pitt
    5 C Brewer
    6 A Jones
    7 M Blakeston
    8 S Quarterman
    9 J Burdett
    10 D Wills
    11 J Stormont
    12 B Devonport
    13 M Townsend
    14 E Alexis
    15 K Kingdom

    16 J Fenwick
    17 M Hill
    18 G Michael

Despite struggling in the set scrummages, Argaum started strongly in defense. The pack working well as a unit and with big hitting from the back-row in the rucks and wiley mauling from the front five, the work done over pre-season seemed to have paid off.

After a gruelling, forward dominated first 25 minutes, Topsham finally created an overlap after a sustained spell in the Argaum 22. The conversion was missed. From there, the game opened up more and clever kicking from Darren Wills and well supported breaks from Ben Devonport and Mike Townsend in the centres swung the momentum back in favour of Argaum.

Debutant Ben Devonport broke 5 minutes before the break with a powerful 50 yard run, brushing off tackles and running some unanswerable angles to touchdown under the posts, for Darren Wills to convert.

Topsham didn’t seem to like or indeed cope with the physical element that Argaum took to them. Despite an early second half try, countless big hits from the Argaum backrow and entire back line, forced Topsham’s fly-half to kick almost everything, which didn’t work in their favour, as Jamie Stormont, Eroy Alexis on the wings and Karl Kingdom at full-back were too quick and collected everything, then went on the counter attack.

Two late tries for Topsham made the scoreline more flattering than perhaps it should’ve been.

  • Message from Paul Elms re: Sunday Junior Presentation at Argaum -- rb, 11:51:35 05/07/05 Sat
    Dear All

Just a quick note to confirm and there will be a short training session
on Sunday the 8th starting at 10.30am and finishing with a medal
presentation to all the boys at about 12.00 back at the club house.

If the weather is fine we will have a Bar-B-Que outside the club. We
hoping that the presentation will be made by an Albion Player
    (possiblely Graham Dawe).

This will be the last of the Sunday sessions until Septmber so it would
be nice to get as many boys up there as possible, so if you can pass
this message on to anyone you know I would appreciate it.

Finally during the summer months training will continue at the club on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6.30 pm.

Hope to see you all on Sunday.

    Best regards

    Paul Elms

  • PENZANCE 2005 -- Stuwie Q, 09:31:16 03/29/05 Tue
Well, the tour is nearly upon us.

There are still a few playing positions needing to be filled though... Namely a prop (Squeally, are you coming?), a hooker (Belli, you know you wanna) possibly a back-row player, and a winger and full-back. Of course, any additional replacements will be catered for accordingly. The team is looking quite good though.

The hotel is booked and I'm going to book the train tickets this week. To do this though, I'm going to need some more money in, as I'm only a poor student nurse and dont think my overdraft will stretch quite that far. I'll have to sweet-talk tthe laydee at great western trains... he-he! I'm sure a mutual arrangement can be made.

I'll be at Argaum tonight (tuesday) and of course on saturday for the home game against Civil Service, which brings me on nicely to the tour meeting!

The final tour meeting will be then... Saturday 2/4/05. 12 noon.

Any ideas for a tour theme will be welcomed, along with suggestions for tour jobs. Final arrangements for meeting on the day etc should be arranged then, so get those thinking caps on!

Support during the match on Saturday would also be greatly appreciated, as it's the last home game of a long and difficult season. Hopefully the team can do the club proud and display the effort that has gone in over the season to improve and get a creditable result against a very good civil service side.

  • Friday Report -- Stuwie Q, 09:42:00 02/25/05 Fri

We're going to be up for this crunch game against Torpoint. Over the past few seasons our results have been extremely close.
Having been improving week by week and following an extremely good performance last week against Old Techs, we're looking to this game with belief that our first points this season are not far away. We appreciate that Torpoint have also had some good results this season, but hope that the fact that we are pointless will provoke a greater desire to win. All players to meet at the clubhouse at 12.00 as there's a tour meeting beforehand.

This year's tour, due to short notice will be in PENZANCE.

    Preliminary details.

    Saturday 30th April
    Vs St Just RFC

Travel down to Penzance early saturday morning via train (return fair approximately £10)

Book into Hotel, find an alehouse and commence!

Play St Just RFC. They have a great Club-House and are very accomadating. Sing drink and be merry.

Eventually progress to penzance, continue merriment, then retire.

Sunday, find alehouse, recover with hair of the dog.

Return via late train. (last one, approximately 2200hrs)

We've chosen to do this as it's cheap and easy to organise at relatively short notice.

Projected cost of this mini tour is about £35-£40 (not including beer funds)

    PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP!
    Spread the word.

TOUR MEETING: Saturday 26th February 1200 (before St Columba game)
