  • Devon 3 - Buckfastleigh Ramblers 10 Argaum Chiefs 11 -- rb, 01:17:31 01/21/03 Tue
RAMBLERS' hopes of keeping pace with Civil Service at the top suffered a blow as they succumbed to an injury-time defeat at the hands of Argaum.

The Chiefs had taken the lead with a try from Paul Critchley, before Buckfastleigh followed suit with a score from centre James Hind, and a conversion and penalty from fly-half Steve Chapple to claim the advantage at the break.

In the second period Argaum's Darren Wills pulled back a penalty to narrow the deficit to 10-8.

But the Argaum centre struck again, in the third minute of injury time, so the visitors left the Cricket Ground with two valuable points.

(Evening Herald Match Report) - I am reliably informed that Paul Critchley & Mike Louise touched down at the same time, Mike has been awarded the try (Well he's paid his subs!)

  • Information about Kevin Wilton who played in early 80's -- Jane Turnbull, 22:32:00 11/09/02 Sat
    Hi,
Kev and I got together in 1982 when he moved to Exeter, we lost touch but finally got together again in 1999 and moved in together. We now have a son Matthew born September 2002.

Kev died suddenely aged 37 in Sweden of a heart attack in February of this year.

I know that he played for your team in the late 1970's and early 80's and as I am compiling a memory box/book for his son if anyone has any piccies or memories of Kev they would like to share with us I would be most grateful.

I doubt that there is any videotape, but again if any exists I would be delighted to get a copy.

    Thanks for your time.

  • Devon 3 - Argaum Chiefs 0 Civil Service 15 -- rb, 22:53:59 11/04/02 Mon
The Chiefs surrendered their unbeaten league record after this city derby on a bleak afternoon at Bickleigh Down. The home side were without the services of points machine Darren Wills, Mark Foster (unavailable) and second row Steve Clack (injured) but welcomed back player-coach Simon Robertson from Green Goddess Duty. Jamie Ducat made his first team debut at outside-half. With persistant rain and enveloping fog throughout the match this was never going to be a classic. The early exchanges were fairly even up front with Argaum having the better at the scummage and the visitors the lineout. It was in the loose where the key to the game lay and this is where Civil had the upper hand with a number of turnovers. However it was Argaum who came closest to scoring first when winger Mike Louise intercepted from inside his own half but was caught a yard before the line. Civil were glad to clear their lines on a couple of occasions but they opened the scoring midway through the half with a Gerry Brown penalty. The home side continued to defend heroically through the remainder of the half but could not prevent centre Mike Thorne from grounding near the posts just before half-time which Brown converted. To make matters worse for the Chiefs Phil Hall had to depart the field with a persistant knee injury. Turning around 10 points in arrears and playing down the slope Argaum fancied their chances of pulling off a result but in these sort of conditions chances are few and far between. Chances were created but spilt passes, knock-ons and wrong options meant that long periods of Argaum pressure went unrewarded. Civil continued to look dangerous on the break but once again the home defence held firm. It wasn't until the latter stages when Argaum threw caution to the wind in an effort to get back on terms did Civil score again from an Argaum mistake. Fly-half Mike Colmer scoring out wide in a 2 on 1 situation. Argaum will be hugely disappointed to lose this match and with cooler heads in the last third might have taken the spoils. Too much possession was also gifted to Civil's experienced and streetwise pack. There were a number of good performances throughout the side but outstanding were scrum-half Paul Tottman displaying bags of committment and some deft touches while Darren Truscott is playing his most consistent rugby for a number of seasons. These positives have to be taken into next week's Devon Cup showdown with Exeter Saracens.
Argaum Chiefs: Tomlinson, Louise, D.Morgan, Hall, Quickly, Ducat, Tottman, Pinder, McDowell, Gould, Moulder, P.Morgan, Harris, Truscott, Robertson.

  • Argaum Tigers 34 Ivybridge III 7 -- rb, 23:31:49 10/30/02 Wed
A strong Tigers team featuring a number of new faces defeated a spirited Ivybridge side yesterday at Bickleigh Down. Argaum opened the scoring with a Nigel Pinder try which was followed up by tries from scrum-half Paul Tottman and outside-half Jamie Ducat, both of which were debut tries for the club. The latter was converted by Darren Wills. Ivybridge hit back on the stroke of half time with a converted try. With Ivybridge suffering a couple of casualties, Argaum lent a couple of players to make the numbers up. The second half saw Argaum dominate proceedings but a number of handling errors saw scoring opportunities wasted. Nigel Pinder added a couple more tries to complete his hat-trick, Wills converting one, and captain Toby Liberson rounded off the scoring with a try in the corner after a good handling move through the backs.

  • Devon 3 - Argaum Chiefs 18 St Columba Torpoint 3 -- rb, 21:43:52 10/16/02 Wed
A win that takes Argaum to joint top of Devon 3 in what was generally an unsatisfying afternoon. The match was brought to a premature end when injuries to the referee, David Mason of Saltash, forced him to abandon the encounter after 62 minutes. Having passed the required 60 minutes however the result stood. With Andy Critchley, Paul Critchley and Simon Robertson unavailable the Chiefs once again showed their flexibility this season with captain Lee McDowell slotting in at hooker. Danny Morgan was welcomed back at full-back whilst Chris Curnow and Nigel Pinder returned to the pack. Argaum started poorly and made more mistakes in the first 10 minutes then they have in the previous 2 matches combined. Several penalties were conceded but St Columba could only convert one of those chance through Steve Rivett. Argaum gradually played their way out of trouble and Mike Louise, playing his best rugby for some time, went over in the corner for a try after a quickly taken throw in. Although the line-out wasn't functioning particularly well the home pack started to take a grip on the game in most other areas, once again dominating the scrummage. Pressure started to tell on Columba and Darren 'Sparky' Truscott barged his way over for a second try which completed the first half scoring. Turning around 10-3 up and playing down the slope you would have expected the Chiefs to rattle up the score, but the third (and final) quarter was a stop-start affair with the referee needing treatment on a number of occasions. From one of the few constructive passages of play Phil Hall was sent over in the bottom corner for his 5th try of the season after a quickly taken penalty. Argaum will probably feel they would have added to the scoreline had the match had gone the distance but at this stage of the season 2 league points is what matters most.
Argaum Chiefs: D.Morgan, Quickly, P.Morgan, Wills, Louise, Tomlinson, Tottman, Pinder, Hall, Foster, Clack, Curnow, Truscott, McDowell(c), Moulder.

  • Devon 3 - Argaum Chiefs 21 Buckfastleigh Ramblers 12 -- rb, 22:21:00 09/29/02 Sun
The Chiefs kept up their recent good from with a hard-fought victory over Buckfastleigh at Bickleigh Down. The Ramblers, who had despatched Civil comfortably in the opening round of league fixtures, started in confident mood and scored a superbly constructed try through their backs in the opening few minutes. It looked like Argaum would be in for a really hard afternoon when they added a second try but with no.8 Rocky Roberts ploughing his way over from short range and Mike Louise scoring an opportunist try (Wills converting)the teams turned around at half-time level at 12-12. On a very warm autumn afternoon Argaum began to turn up the heat in the second half. The pack put Bucks under huge pressure in the scrum, while Phil Morgan - relishing his new role at second row - and Mark Foster dominated the line-out. Several times Argaum threatened the try-line without scoring but sustained pressure did produce infringements from the Ramblers and Darren Wills stepped up to slot over 3 penalty goals. Buckfastleigh produced a rousing finish but good defence coupled with excellent clearance kicks from Paul Tottman and Paul Critchley saw Argaum take both points. The return match in January promises to be another cracking encounter.
Chiefs: Tomlinson, J.Jemmeson, Wills, Hall, Louise, P. Critchley, Tottman, Roberts(A.Critchley), McDowell (capt), Foster, Clack, P.Morgan, Robertson, Truscott, Moulder. (Reps Not used: Bartlett, Stevens)

  • Junior Vase Round 1: Plymouth Argaum Chiefs 52 Plympton Victoria 35 -- rb, 21:11:21 09/22/02 Sun
A match of two halves as Argaum took advantage of a disorganised Plym Vic start to run in early tries from Mike Louise & Steve Tomlinson, Darren Wills converting both. Plym Vic hit back through a Chris Maddison try converted by Stretch King. Argaum - with captain Phil Morgan deputising at second row - started to dominate up front and went on a scoring spree with tries from captain Phil Morgan, Kev Quickley, Darren Wills (2) & Paul Critchley. Wills slotted 4 more conversions. Trailing 47-7 at the break Plym Vic rallied valiantly and hit back with tries from Lee Ainsley, Chris Maddison and Ben Towle, King converting all 3 tries. Argaum responded with a further unconverted try from Paul Critchley before Doc Livingston scored underneath the posts, King converting. An encouraging performance from Argaum who despite missing a few regulars showed a ruthless streak in the first half but took their foot of the gas slightly in the second. Nevertheless Argaum progress into the second round for the first time in a few seasons.
Argaum: Tomlinson, Quickley, J.Jemmeson, Wills, Louise, A.Critchley, Tottman, Truscott, P.Critchley, Foster, Clack, P.Morgan(capt), Robertson, Sillitoe, Moulder.

  • Argaum Chiefs 19 Saltash II 5 - Match Report -- rb, 09:25:13 09/11/02 Wed
Argaum Chiefs defeated a strong Saltash II side at Bickleigh Down last night by 19-5. Ashes started strongly and take an early lead through a well-worked try from Julian Oakes. This score galvanised Argaum who replied later in the half through a try in the corner from Phil Hall expertly converted by Darren Wills from the touchline.
Playing down the slope in the second half the Chiefs began to take control of the match. Phil Hall scampered over for his second touch down early in the half, before a sustained period of pressure saw Simon Robertson squeeze over from short range, Wills adding the conversion to the latter.
Spilt passes saw both sides spurn scoring chances in the final stages but the score remained the same for Argaum to pick up the Combination Merit Table points.

  • From Friday Night's Herald -- rb, 13:21:38 08/27/02 Tue
ARGAUM LOOKING FORWARD WITH NEW SCRUM MACHINE

    08:21 - 23 August 2002

Plymouth's second oldest rugby club started a new era this week when they took delivery of their new custom-built scrum machine.

Plymouth Argaum, who were founded in 1876 - 11 years after the team which was to become known as Plymouth Albion, were able to order the machine after winning an 'Awards for All' lottery grant.

Plymouth-based firm APS metalwork designed and built the machine to fit Argaum's pack (pictured left), as well as making it suitable for the new youth teams that the club is currently developing.

Argaum coach Simon Robertson was delighted with the scrum machine and thanked APS metalwork for the splendid job they have done.

"This new scrum machine will help improve on what is considered one of the best packs in our league," he said.

Argaum narrowly missed promotion last season to Devon Two, but are hoping to rectify that in the seasons to come.

They are currently working on a partnership with Lipson Vale Community College, which will start during the coming autumn term.

The partnership is designed to develop Plymouth's newest team, as Lipson Vale is the only secondary school in the city not to have a rugby team.

Their off-field facilities also received a boost when their website, www.argaum.org.uk, was Rugby News website of the month for April 2002.

"We have seen the lack of promotion as a wake up call," added Robertson.

"We have had a good long look at how we have played our rugby in the past and what we need to do over the coming season to ensure promotion.

"We are also offering somewhere for the youth of Plymouth to play out of school, which we feel is a must if teams like us are to survive."

Argaum have already started pre-season training and have changed their approach as part of a promotion drive.

The Devon Three side are currently seeking sponsors for their new youth team, and sponsors are also required for kit and a second-hand minibus.

If anyone is interested in joining or sponsoring Plymouth Argaum contact Simon Robertson on 01752 212423, or visit their award-winning website www.argaum.org.uk.

  • RUGBY ****** THIS SATURDAY ****** -- BARNEY, 11:01:09 08/22/02 Thu
Saturday sees the Angus Colville 10 a side competition at Tavistock Rugby Club.
Angus was a good friend of Argaum indeed he was a trustee of Argaum in addition to being one of the leading lights of Tavistock RFC. He was tragically murdered in Central America about 6 years ago when he was leaving a bank whilst on holiday.
My own favourite recollection of Angus was coming on tour with Argaum to London many moons ago where he wore three ties all weekend, one was Argaums, another was Devon Referees Society and the last one is lost in the mists of time I'm afraid. Angus was a great believer in fun with rugby and was a sad loss to this small part of the rugby world.
Lets have a good turnout for this day, last year we fielded a side of forwards and managed to come fourth! Even if you can't play it's well worth the trip up as its a good day out!

I have seen and tested the new scrum machine. It is better than any I have used in the past because it was built just for us! Paul from APS steel works apologised for not getting it up the club on Tusday night.
It will be there 6pm on Tusday just before we start the first game of the season.

On Tuesday we will be taking delivery of a new custom made Scrum machine. The local papers have said they will attend. We need player support. The more that are up there the better the club will look in the papers.
Even if you make this the only training session you attend be for the season starts it will be worth it. the session will not be just about the forwards, it will be a general game play session with the warm up being the only fittness involved. (ask any one who has attended one of the new warm up sessions and they will tell you its easy)
so lets make the right impression to the opposition and turn out training.
    Every little helps.

  • New Season -- Reesy, 10:21:53 08/08/02 Thu
After reading Willsy's last message it looks like there are a few pairs of boots to be dusted off in the next few weeks.
First game of the new season will be against Plymouth area police on tuesday 20th August, 6.30 pm kick-off. This will be followed by a further trials game on Saturday 31st August against OPO's, time to be confirmed nearer the date but probably 3.00 pm. Both matches at home.

Where is every one, playing rugby is a team game no wonder we are fucking useless on a sat afternoon.
Please make a bigger effort or we might as well all piss off to another team. Well done to people who turn out week in week out.

No excuses lets have a bit of commitment at least two evenings a month its not a lot to ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
