  • T.K. Hitchins (1915-2004) -- rb, 13:00:58 04/29/04 Thu
It was with great sadness that the club learned that Life President Tom Hitchins passed away yesterday, aged 88. Tom was instrumental in the revival of the club after the war and the building and setting up of the clubhouse and pitches at Roborough. Until very recently he would come up to Bickleigh Down on a Saturday afternoon to watch activities and pass own his own advice. The following tribute to Tom is an extract from the late David Dobell's Centenary History in 1987.

"Any progress since 1946 is due to one man and one man only - Thomas Kingdom Hitchins, the second of four generations of Hitchins to have played for the Club - and in this the Club’s centenary year, happily and deservedly, President of Plymouth Argaum R.F.C.

Hon. Secretary in season 1939-40 which did not "take off" Tom, for reasons known only to him, felt himself indebted to the Club for his many happy seasons, where he had spent in his pre-war years. With the coming of peace, he set about repaying that "debt" one thousand fold. In conjunction with Leslie Paul in 1946 he called a public meeting at the Lockyer Hotel, with a view to restoring the Club and - from what sources only he knows - produced shirts and, in the course of time, pitches and goal posts. He continued his role as Hon. Secretary until he saw the Club’s revival safely under way, at which time he decided to withdraw from that post - not, one suspects, without a certain relief as correspondence was never one of his favourite subjects - but willingly continued as mentor, advisor, policy maker, and in fact in any capacity needing help. When the Club was forced to move from Estover, Tom saw possibilities of achieving his ultimate ambition for the Club - that it should have its own permanent headquarters; a meeting place for members past and present. First, he made available to the Club a site at Roborough, and with his many contacts and by personal example, bullied, cajoled and influenced players into thinking they could become builder's labourers. He persuaded the Club’s tame architect Reg Gurling (who needed very little persuading) into drawing submitting and passing plans, talked builders merchants into straining their discounts to extremes and any builders within the club, notably Norman White and Colin Whiting to lend their expertise. Tom, at all times - well in all his spare time - being all things to all people. The result - the Clubhouse - which has steadily expanded over the years and has been in existence for almost 30 seasons, held by the Club trustees free of any - financial charges."

Tom will be sorely missed by everyone connected with the club and our condolences are passed on to his family.

  • Friendly: Argaum XV 45 Totnes XV 0 -- rb, 08:30:15 05/02/04 Sun
Plymouth Argaum rounded up their season with an emphatic 45-0 win over a spririted Totnes in a club match at Bickleigh Down. After a minutes silence in memory of Life President Tom Hitchins who died earlier this week it was Totnes who started brightly but eventually Argaum's power up front told. There were first half tries from Ivan Mattus, OPOs guest Simon Bowman, Andy Critchley and Wayne Lowndes. The second half was a much more even affair, played mostly in the home side's half. But further tries were added from Lowndes, Paul Tottman and Roy Alexis. Steve Tomlinson knocked over 5 conversions in total. Totnes never gave up but Argaum's defence held fiem through the final stages to deny them a consolation score.

  • Junior Rugby Progress Update -- rb, 22:04:55 04/28/04 Wed
It's been quite a busy end to the season for the junior section with Under 9s entering a festival at Paignton, the Under 11s playing at the World Cup Sweet Chariot Tour at Plymouth Albion and an under 15 side in a Sevens tournament at Crediton. In addition the Under 12s have played matches against Saltash (twice) and Ivybridge, whilst Under 8s, 9s and 11s played at Salcombe last week. None of the matches resulted in a victory to add to the Under 10s win earlier in the season but everyone; players coaches and parents have learned from the experience and are already looking forward to next season with a fixture list which is filling up quite rapidly. This coming Sunday (May 2nd) is our last training session of the season. If you would like to get involved next season please see details on the Junior Rugby page.

  • Evening Herald Report for Last Night's matches -- rb, 12:28:53 04/22/04 Thu
The trophy cabinet at Moorlands Lane will today be filled with spoils from the RNEC and Pedrick Cups as Saltash first and second teams head back across the Tamar. Ashes' second-string overawed Argaum Wanderers with a 45-5 scoreline which included a hat-trick for centre Matt Simmonds.

Skipper Steve O'Melia said: "Matt Simmonds was our man-of-the-match. Overall we had a good game, played well and a fine end for 53-year-old Fred Tucker who is retiring."

Argaum had made the early running and Chris Millar jinked his way out of trouble for Saltash.

Simmonds threw a wayward pass at the other end to deny his side the first blood but within minutes was over the line from a tap penalty move.

Argaum's driving maul saw Paul Venkort stopped short at the other end and further pressure from the Wanderers tested the Ashes defence.

On the 20 minutes a penalty fed along the line from Millar found the gap for Simmonds' second with scrum-half Ben Jones converting.

Ashes had the territory and Simmonds completed his trio of tries inside the half hour when a clever kick over Argaum dropped in-goal.

Right winger Ryan Jones dived into the left corner with Jones potting the conversion and on the half-time whistle had added the extras after Ashes' pack drove over.

Trailing by 33 points, Argaum brought Will Moulder on to steady their front row and Wanderers spent the third quarter inside the Saltash half, the Mattus brothers being a constant threat.

Ashes had introduced club chairman Steve Moss among the replacements but the fresh legs couldn't prevent Argaum's Stuart Courtman from finding a hole in the defence.

The restart took Saltash into Argaum's half and with the pack driving forwards Ashes' Andy Hughes came up with the ball on the half-hour. Full-back Kevin Noyce potted the kick.

Ashes continued to press the Argaum line and replacement Noyce, on for Grant Brettell, weaved through on the stroke of full-time, with his conversion bringing the Pedrick Cup with a 45-5 victory.

Argaum spokesman Richard Belli said: "We battled well and stuck at it. We had some youngsters and will hope to build on this next season."

St Columba and Torpoint put up a gritty display against Saltash in the RNEC Cup final and victorious Ashes skipper Steve Hall praised them, and said after the 26-5 win: "Credit to Columba, we have played teams from higher leagues but none have given us as hard a fight as tonight.

"We've had an up-and-down season so to finish with some silver will lift our spirits."

Saints paid no respect to Ashes' status as they laid on the first attack which ended with a five-metre scrum. But after full-back Si Nicholls' up-and-under found Saltash's Vaughan Roberts responding, a high ball caught Columba empty at the back. Ashes attacked but were too complex in the backs until centre John Forde slipped through to make the opening touchdown.

Craig Walters' penalty attempt went wide as Saltash were caught handling in the ruck two minutes later.

But Columba stayed in the area and Greg Mason made some crashing runs at Ashes' backline in a passage of play which gave Columba the impetus for number eight Drew Blakely to round off. Half an hour in and the score was even again.

Skipper Hall picked up at the back of a scrum to sprint 50 metres up the wing.

Hauled down just short of the line Ashes made the most of the opportunity and a switch move put Nigel Owen in to regain the lead. The Ashes fly-half's conversion went high and straight for a 12-5 half-time advantage.

Saltash came out fired up for the second half but still found the final pass going astray.

Julian Oakes and James Woodward were felled short of the line by a Columba defence that was proving impenetrable. But Hall peeled off a five-metre scrum and his cross-field run gave John Forde a running line for the Ashes centre to drag his tacklers in with him.

Ashes' higher league experience began to show with Woodward punching holes in Torpoint's defences - but Columba's Shaun Austin caught everything at the lineout and Nicholls was always ready to attack from deep.

Nippy scrum-half Jeff Thompson split Saint apart and took Ashes to within a metre of the line but Phil Masters' illegal use of the boot had the second row heading for the sin-bin and Columba clearing their line.

With the whistle drawing near, Saltash found some urgency and from outside the 22 fly-half Owen dummied to go in under the posts. His kick was academic to the 26-5 result but Columba didn't stop fighting.

Columba skipper Pincher Martin said: "It was a very good performance, we raised our game. Saltash deserved to win but we gave them a good game."

The Chiefs' scrummaging found the better of visitors North Tawton, who waited until the close of the first half to offer any kind of resistance.

After the break North kicked their way out of trouble, but Argaum were always in control.

Second-row Paul Venkort, flanker Matt Blakestone (2), winger Mike Townsend, number eight Stuart Quarterman and Steve Tomlinson, who also potted three conversions, got Argaum tries before replacement flanker Mark Hunt added a final one.

  • Devon 2: Plymouth Civil Service... 12 Plymouth Argaum Chiefs...0 -- rb, 12:51:33 04/05/04 Mon
Civil coach Danny Avery conceded, "It was not what we expected and hat's off to Argaum, who defended heroically."

As Civil were looking to round off their season with a win over the Roborough outfit, they were surprised to be leading by only seven points at the halfway stage.

Evergreen winger Nicky Dunne found the only break through the Argaum defence, for Dean Oram to convert.

With most of the game going in Civil's direction Argaum stuck to their task and held off the onslaught.

The spirited Argaum performance brought out plenty of unforced errors from the hopeful Civil.

However, the home side held on to their lead and added a second half try through skipper Damien Mulvihill.

  • RNEC Semi-Final: St Columba 15 Argaum Chiefs 0 -- rb, 09:16:22 04/05/04 Mon
St Columba are through to the final of the RNEC Cup and a date with Saltash at The Rectory next month after grinding down Argaum in their semi-final.

The game, already postponed once, kicked off late due to traffic congestion which made Argaum late arriving.

When the match did get under way it was Columba who were first to settle and on six minutes they went ahead when Argaum went offside and Dave Oakley landed the penalty.

Columba gradually got on top of the game and stretched that lead on 25 minutes with a try from number eight Pete Hodgkinson, who picked up and drove over from the base of a close-in scrum. Oakley converted.

That made it 10-0 and that's how it stayed up until half time.

The killer score to Argaum's hopes came almost straight from the restart when Columba worked their way back up field for prop Mike Grieve to claim his first try for the club.

Argaum seldom threatened again and the second half fizzled out into a scrappy affair, not helped by heavy conditions under foot.

"They always have a big, strong pack so we knew we were in for a hard time up front," said Danny Leeson, who scored two of Rock Fort's tries and landed eight out of nine conversions and a penalty for 29-point haul.

"But we were too quick for them outside and they couldn't live with us."

Ben Ashford and Duncan Campbell joined Leeson in the double-up club. Dan Stevens, Chris Cotter and Grant Bennett all bagged singles.

Mike Townsend scored an interception try for Argaum which Steve Tomlinson converted.

The title will stay with the club as it will be used by the Roborough club's flourishing junior section.

But it was visitors Totnes who got off to a roaring start with two early tries coming from their centre.

But the Tigers returned with a try from Paul Venkort, which was followed by Jason Burdett getting the touch down.

The Totnes full-back intercepted to regain the lead early in the second period, but Argaum again countered with a second try as number eight Venkort peeled off a scrum.

With the full-back notching three conversions, scrum-half Jason Burdett grounding his second before flanker Matt Blakeston and wing Mike Townsend said farewell to the Tigers.

    Evening Herald Report
Argaum have struggled one way or another this season but they showed huge spirit to take the game to second-placed Salcombe.

In the end Salcombe were far too strong, but the forwards at Argaum put on a magnificent display in the second half to come back in to the game.

At the end of the first half Salcombe were 31-7 up, and Argaum might have feared the worst.

Ashley Spencer had scored two tries, and further tries for Salcombe came from King, Rossi, Lidstone, Burleigh, Bastin and Pernowski. Lidstone also added three conversions.

For Argaum, Chris Curnow scored with Steve Tomlinson converting.

After the break Argaum just about had the upper hand with tries by Kevin Quickley, Phil Hall and Steven Barnes, the last of which was converted by Tomlinson.

Argaum secretary Richard Belli was delighted with his team's performance.

Belli said: "Special praise must go to flanker Matt Blakestone who had an outstanding game."

    Evening Herald Report
THE Chiefs' lack of front row was bettered by the experienced pack of the Old Technicians at Roborough.

Without possession Argaum found the going tough.

Flanker Ty Baker was first off the mark for the Old Boys with Al Trevorrow getting the extras, but after scrum half Matt Jacques ran in from the halfway line to go alongside the posts, Trevorrow missed the conversion.

Second Row Gary Holley enjoyed his line-out work, and back row men number eight Steve Henwood and Ty Baker's efforts were rewarded with tries while Trevorrow soon made amends improving both touchdowns.

Some strong tackling from the Argaum backs held off the Technicians and Trevorrow added two second half conversions for tries from centre Danny Doyle and winger Rob Gracey.

  • Devon 2 - Plymouth Argaum...0 Buckfastleigh 46 -- rb, 12:58:46 02/09/04 Mon
    Last week's Evening Herald Report
BUCKFASTLEIGH used the conditions well to build a 36-0 half-time lead, although Argaum felt they should have had a penalty try shortly before the break.

For the visitors, scrum-half Greg Robins scored twice and flanker Pete Mortimore three times.

Steve Chapple scored a try and added three conversions.

In the second half, Argaum also used the conditions well, made changes to the front row and held the visitors to two breakaway tries, the first from Angus Cann and the second from Matt Hallett.

The Ramblers stay on course to gain promotion from Devon Two without losing a game.
