  • Junior Helpers -- BARNEY, 09:54:23 10/27/03 Mon
I'd just like to thank Richy and his helpers, (Tippsy, Stu Q, Kev Q and Paul Venkort) for making the first Sunday of our future such a great success.

Thanks are also due to the Great Stand-Off in the sky who gave us such a wonderfully dry morning on which to kick off the venture.

If you didn't make it with your kids you missed out on seeing 16 youngsters really enjoying themselves. The helpers had fun too!

    Well done, keep it up!

His team (Arbroath) is playing in the Scottish National Leagues this season. He also produced a top quality Haggis at Argaum a couple of years ago to which Tommy Cooper recited Burns.

  • Devon 2 & Lockie Cup: Old Techs...22 Plymouth Argaum...5 -- rb, 12:32:33 10/06/03 Mon
    Evening Herald Match Report

ARGAUM chose to make their league fixture a double-header and put the additional Lockie Cup fixture into their match with Old Technicians.

It proved to be a tight first half with Techs sneaking in front from an Al Trevorrow penalty.

A second shot at goal was converted by Trevorrow, before Argaum put the home side under pressure, and some sloppy tackling let second row Paul Venkort in for the try.

Trevorrow slotted home his third penalty to lead 9-5 at half time.

The loss of Techs' fly-half Chris Millar caused a lot of shuffling among the Old Boys, but Trevorrow slotted two early penalties after the break and around the hour Matt Jacques skipped through defence from the centre of the park, to go in under the posts. Trevorrow adding the conversion.

The final quarter saw Argaum put Techs under pressure, but the Old Boys kept them out to take their first league points and go through to the next round of the cup.

  • Devon 2: Argaum Chiefs 10 Salcombe 20 - Herald Report -- rb, 16:44:43 09/29/03 Mon
    SALCOMBE SEE OFF ARGAUM'S FIGHTBACK

Salcombe took a 13-point interval lead against the slope in a close-run match at Roborough. Winger Lee King and Mark Lidstone scored the tries with full back Lidstone adding a penalty.

In the second half, Argaum came back with tries of their own as number eight Matt Mathews grounded from a penalty move and winger Kevin Quigley touched down either side of a breakaway try from Salcombe's Ashley Spencer.

The Salcombe fly-half went in under the posts after a passage of play through the visiting backs.

Salcombe went down to 14 men with a sin-binning and Argaum pressed them down to the wire but failed to make the points as an end to end attack was cut short by Salcombe

  • Argaum Tigers 26 Civil Service II 45 - Evening Herald Match Report -- rb, 13:03:07 09/22/03 Mon
TRIES from centre Nicky Dunne, winger Nick Coles and back row player

Kev White gave Civil a 19-nil half-time lead after coach Danny Avery potted the conversions from scrum half.

But Argaum struck back after the break with centre Mike Louise, prop Stuart Quarterman, centre Kevin Quigley and two Andy Rees conversions squaring the match.

Civil recouped after the first quarter hour for winger Paul Trevaskis to touch down, and Danny Partridge went down the blind side from the halfway line for a fine solo try.

A try for Dave Clarke and a second for Trevaskis, with Partridge adding the kicks, gave Civil a commanding lead.

But the last shout went to Argaum, with Paul Venkort barging in from the half way line to go in under the posts.

We are in the process of setting up a junior section at Plymouth Argaum which we hope to get up and running in time to coincide with the World Cup. As well as providing Plymouth with a much needed additional venue to Devonport Services and Plymstock Junior Sections there will be many long term benefits to our club in getting this going. This coming Sunday (14th September) I would like to hold a start-up meeting at the clubhouse (1pm) in order we can get things moving. In the morning I will be visiting Devonport Services Junior Section (11:00ish) to see how things are run there.

If you are interested in getting involved with the junior section as a coach, physio or in an admin capacity or have any ideas to contribute then please come along to the meeting and/or Devonport Services visit.

Please contact me if you are able to attend either event this Sunday or if you are interested but unable to attend this time. My contact details for the rest of this week are 07711 441599 or email youthrugby@argaum.org.uk.

If you know anybody who might be interested but won't receive this email could you please pass the information on.

  • Rugby Coup For Plymouth -- rb, 20:55:51 04/11/03 Fri
Rugby: Plymouth has landed a major coup by winning the right to stage one of the most prestigious youth rugby internationals in the sporting calendar next week. Devonport Services' Rectory ground - after a long and frustrating wait - will host the 99th annual England v Wales under-16s clash on Tuesday, where many of British rugby's most promising youngsters will be on view

In fact, it will be a case of buy one, get one free, as there are two matches planned for the top afternoon's entertainment.

First up in the Tesco-sponsored international series, is the 'A' clash between the two countries (kick-off 1.00), with the first XVs kicking-off at 2.30.

Four days afer the Rectory showdowns, the England youngsters will next tackle the famous azzurri shirts of Italy at Barnstaple, the following Saturday.

The chairman of Devon's Youth and Mini-Section rugby development, Graham Emond, has been heavily involved in both organising and bringing about this high-profile tie.

"For years, I had been writing to the English schools union asking for Plymouth to be considered for this event," Emond said.

"And every year they kept writing back saying there were still considering us.

"Last year I ran into some of the officials and I said: 'Look, I've been writing, off and on, for years asking to stage the international in Plymouth and nothing ever happens, and frankly I'm getting fed up'.

"Well, it must have done some good," he laughed.

"But, seriously, a lot of the credit must go to the England under-16s' manager George Squires, who lives in Ilfracombe, for helping to persuade the authorities to put these great matches on in the city."

It will cost £4 for adults to watch the two matches, with under-16 entry priced at £2.

    “Golden Boot Challenge”

WIN UP TO £1,250 and FREE BLACKTHORN CIDER!

Following the success of the previous Golden Boot Challenge, Blackthorn is launching a new competition to find the best all round kicker in the West Country. Our aim is to discover the next Jonny Wilkinson in this region! The challenge is only open to competitors aged 21 or under (no minimum age) on Saturday 10th May 2003 – the date of the final.

The Devon leg of the competition takes place at Newton Abbot RFC on Monday 7th April from 7.30pm. Bath Rugby players will be on hand to provide coaching for the contestants.

The Golden Boot Challenge requires participants to place kick, drop kick and punt. On the night, the winner of each individual skill receives £50, and the best performer is guaranteed £100. In addition, all the contestants receive a rugby ball, T Shirt, £5 towards traveling expenses and refreshments.

Numbers are limited, with a maximum of two players per club. But if spaces exist after the closing date, and you have nominated more than two players on the entry form, we may contact your “replacements” to take part.

Closing date for enries is Monday 31st March.

Your club will be able to follow the progress of the Golden Boot Challenge during April and May on HTV and Carlton West Country TV, as both stations are committed to attending and transmitting the highlights of the regional heats and final.

Providing your club is represented at the event, we will arrange to deliver a FREE KEG OF BLACKTHORN (88 pints). Stocking Blackthorn is not a pre-requisite for participating, but as there are no alternative rewards, now is an appropriate opportunity to consider ordering Blackthorn.
If you would like a Blackthorn representative to call, please telephone 07957 667 445.

The heat winners will be invited to attend the Grand Final on Saturday 10th May at The Rec, when Bath Rugby host Newcastle in the last match of the season. The winner will receive the Golden Boot trophy, £1,100 and a ½ day kicking session at their club with Bath’s kicking expert. The runner-up collects £300, 3rd £200, and 4th & 5th £100 each. All the competitors also will receive 4 x complimentary tickets to the Newcastle match for their supporters.

    For further information, contact Graham Kerr 07957 667 445 or e-mail: Promotions@grahamkerr.freeserve.co.uk.

I very much hope you will support this regional initiative.
