Many thanks to all those people who turned up on Saturday night for the Scrumpy & Oggy Night.
General opinion was that it was a bloody good P*ss Up.
Thanks are also due to Dick & the old git on guitar who put on a good nights entertainment of live music, and for letting our new found star Wayne "Fingers" Pearce have a bit of a jam. If you couldn't make it you should be regreting the fact that you missed a good night!

Anyone interested in organising a "Home-Brew" competion with a judging and prize giving night at the club? Could be a laugh!

England outshone by Wales in Cardiff
    Stephen Lamb - 24 June 2002

Wales have inflicted an eight-wicket defeat on England in their one warm-up match for the NatWest triangular series at Sophia Gardens. Set 190 to win, Wales reached the target with nine overs and three balls to spare.

Wales coasted to victory after the Glamorgan off-spinner Robert Croft smashed 30 off just 26 balls as he opened the Welsh innings. He was particularly severe on Matthew Hoggard, who struggled for rhythm and ended with figures of nought for 63 off seven overs. Croft's captain and opening partner Steve James batted throughout the innings, finishing on 83 not out.

  • Just in case anybody missed this report - What is the excuse this time Richy?? -- BARNEY, 20:59:00 05/31/02 Fri
Welsh rugby plumbed new depths on Friday as the Sevens side succumbed 22-12 to Russia on home soil at the Emirates Airline Cardiff Sevens.
A sunny afternoon at the Millennium Stadium saw Wales faces turn even redder than usual as they plunged to an embarrassing defeat in the first round of group games.
Just two days after the senior side lost a 25-0 half-time lead to the Barbarians, the hosts were rocked by early tries from Sergei Kuzmenko and Pavel Baranovski.
And it went from bad to worse as Alexei Ianpoloski claimed Russia's third try for a 15-0 interval lead.
Emyr Lewis opened Wales' account with a touchdown that Arwel Thomas converted, and then Gareth Baber grabbed an opportunist try.
But the comeback was halted as Andrei Kouzin darted away for another converted try to see Russia record the tournament's biggest shock so far.

Rugby player's finger bitten off during game

    May 21 2002 at 06:34AM

    By Kashiefa Ajam
A young rugby player intends to lay a charge against an opponent who bit off nearly half his index finger during a match at the weekend.
"My finger looked like something out of a horror movie," said Virgil Wepener on Monday.
Wepener has identified the other player, but he could not be contacted for comment on Monday night.
'Half my finger was lying on the rugby field'
The player's club, Peninsula RFC, could also not be contacted.
Wepener, 21, from Mitchell's Plain, plays at centre for Temperance Rugby Football Club.
His club played a league match against Peninsula in Muizenberg on Saturday afternoon.
"I tried to prevent my opponent from scoring a try, so I put my hand under the ball.
"While the referee was deciding whether this guy had scored a try or not, he bit my finger. I did not feel the pain immediately."
'Now I can't do my work'
Wepener said the try was not awarded, but he still had not realised that "half my finger was lying on the rugby field".
"My friend came over and picked up the piece of flesh and put it in my pocket. Only then did I realise that it was actually burning," he said.
Wepener's mother Ingrid apologised to spectators for the foul language she had used on Saturday.
"I was so rude and for that I must apologise. But I am still angry because the other guy was not even booked, and the referee allowed the game to continue," she said.
Her son was later taken to Groote Schuur Hospital for treatment.
Ingrid Wepener added that her brother-in-law had been paralysed while playing a rugby match, so she understood the dangers involved.
"The incident with my brother-in-law happened during a tackle. It was an accident. But this one was no accident, it was intentional," she said.
Wepener, who works for an insurance company, said he often used a computer to do his job.
"It's quite ironic that it's my finger, which I use to do my work, that is injured. Now I can't do my work," said a distraught Wepener, with his hand all bandaged up.

  • Recent Herald reports -- rb, 01:49:41 03/21/02 Thu
    18th March:
    Plymouth Argaum...15 North Tawton...15

A WIN would have been nice but the draw was good for Argaum, who were lifted to second in the table.

Thanks to the front-row and hooker Darren Truscott's steals against the head, Argaum pulled back from 10-5 down to level.

The first-half score for Argaum came from a pushover try, scored by number eight Paul Vencourt.

Tawton then scored out wide, converted by Paul Fewings, who added a penalty to their half-time lead.

Scrum-half Danny Morgan came off the back of a close-in scrum to score for the home side. North Tawton then took the lead with Jim Handcock try, only for Argaum to level it when Lee McDowell touched down from a penalty move.

    4th March
ARGAUM II went down in a game where, according to some, the forwards did the hard work and the backs scored.

OPMs got off the ground with tries from Andy Lawrence and Garry Westley, with Lawrence adding a conversion.

Argaum number eight Taff Cummings put them on the scoreboard, barging through the defence and selling a dummy before falling on the ball.

  • Argaum Chiefs 25 Plympton Victoria 7 -- rb, 17:27:24 02/11/02 Mon
ON AN afternoon of sunshine that was almost tropical by Plymouth's recent standards, Argaum overcame Victoria in front of Alan Black, an RFU community rugby officer touring the South West to examine the game's grass roots.

From the start, Argaum were quicker to the break-downs and ended the first half at 10-7. Phil Hall opened the score for Argaum followed by a Wayne Lounds try. Meanwhile, Victoria's captain, Dave Espin, scored and then converted his own effort.

In the second half, Argaum pulled away with tries from Mark Foster and Paul Vemcort. Argaum's captain, Andy Critchley, also scored. In their defence, Victoria were trying-out two new players and with others in odd positions used the game as an experiment. After the match, they said farewell to Steve Whittle who sails to the West Indies with the Royal Navy.
