    Evening Herald Report
IN THIS derby match at the lower reaches of Devon Two, Argaum missed an early penalty, but still had an eight-point lead by the break.

Steve Tomlinson made amends for his previous miss and the ball passed through the Argaum backs for Phil Morgan to complete in the corner.

After the break Chiefs gave way to Plympotn pressure for number nine Neil Wright to get the touchdown.

The Victoria scrum-half pulled the score to 8-7 with the conversions, but Argaum were soon in control again with number eight, Nigel Pinder and centre Darren Wills both crossing. Tottman converted

A final bout of Plympton pressure saw the Chiefs concede a penalty try that Craig Hunt converted.

A testimonial game is arranged for next weekend and any old Argaum players are welcome to attend.

After Phil Morgan had put his side ahead with a try after 15 minutes, Dave Oakley responded with a penalty, before the forwards set up scrum-half Danny Morgan for a try to go to the break, 10-3 ahead.

The Saints faced the wind and the Roborough slope in the second half, and centre Darren Wills completed a move across the Argaum threes, before second-row Nigel Pinder sealed the win with 10 minutes left.

    Evening Herald Report
AFTER trailing to a Nicky Dunne try after a couple of minutes play the Chiefs closed the score with a Steve Tomlinson penalty in a competitive first half at Roborough. With plenty of pressure and missed penalty opportunities, a long, rolling maul from Civil ended with lock Nobby Noble getting the points to go in at half-time 10-3 up.

After the break the visitors held out and started to put together some flowing moves that produced quick tries for scrum-half Danny Goulden and number eight Jonah Jones, converted by Danny Partridge.

As Civil's confidence grew they racked-up the points with tries from Dean Avery, Danny Partridge (2), and Scott Sheldon.

  • Argaum Tour (2005) -- Barney, 12:41:56 12/06/03 Sat
With the days drawing in our thoughts naturally turn to the exciting prospect of the Spring Tour. This year it will be Newcastle, but where will we go the Year After?

With this in mind I have been researching a new destination and have received an invitation not to miss. We are invited to take part in a tournament in PRAGUE. Slovak Prague RFC, the team holding the weekend tournament suffered greatly in the disasterous floods of last year and are trying to re-establish their club after losing everything. Packages range in price from £69/pers to £120/pers which includes all coach transfers (plus flights). Flights can be arranged through the likes of Easy Jet, BMI etc very cheaply.

The games are planned to be 30 minute halves played between 7 UK/Irish teams and the home side. A tactical loss on the first day would ensure that we could drink all day on Sunday together with the other 1st round losers!

When considering the cost of the weekend it should be borne in mind that beer is 15-20% of the price over here and reportedly much stronger than our average pint, and that the package will include a Saturday night banquet with the other 7 teams partaking with EIGHT pints/person included.

All in all, the cost of the weekend will be significantly cheaper than say the Dublin Tour of last year.

By being so early on the uptake, we could get either the best accommodation or the cheapest accommodation. Let's have your views. I have put details of the 2004 tournament for people to peruse on the noticeboard.

For all those interested I am going on tour in 2005 (making up for missing 2004)

    Happy Touring,
    BARNEY

  • Devon 2 - North Tawton......6 Plymouth Argaum....5 -- rb, 13:57:47 12/04/03 Thu
    Report from Tavistock Times
IN this bottom of the table clash the result was always going to be hard fought. And so it proved.

Both sides tried to gain an upper hand but it was even stevens with the game played in the middle of the park and neither side dominating.

North Tawton have adapted to play a ten-man game and it was just beginning to prove effective when Argaum put them under pressure. In a scrum resulting from this veteran No 8 Paul Venncourt got the touchdown to put the visitors into a five point lead after 20 minutes.

North Tawton stuck to their game plan and put Argaum?s heavier and experienced pack under pressure and were eventually rewarded with a penalty which Joe Fewings slotted over.

North Tawton, playing with heart and vigour, kept the game in their opponents? half. Martin Friggins at scrum half was having an outstanding game, tackling and looking for the ball to keep the forwards and backs on the move.

Ross Lawrence on the wing made good runs.

Another score was on the cards and again it was a penalty from Fewings? boot, leaving the score at 6-5 to North Tawton.

North Tawton pressure continued after the break and they kept Argaum camped in their own half.

Gary Denis, after a long lay-off, made a welcome substitution for ever-improving Adam Hooper. Richard Huxtable came on for injured Joe Fewings, Ryan King for Adam Wise.

North Tawton never looked like losing in the end, but will be disappointed by the narrow victory and the fact they did not score a try. But it was their first win in the league and a general all round improvement.

North Tawton are away to Exeter Saracens this Saturday in a friendly, kick-off 2.30pm.

    Evening Herald Report
CENTRE Nick Obolensky hit the Chiefs with two early tries, as the Argaum side struggled again with selection problems.

There was no looking back from there, and although centre Phil Hall and winger Kev Quickly, and a Steve Tomlinson conversion put points on the board for Argaum, it was Darts who raced off to a 71-12 victory.

Centre Matt Putt and Mark Cresswell took two tries apiece, with the fly half notching nine conversions and a penalty goal.

Darts' flankers Simon Enthwistle and Buster Hart, along with number eight Andy Williams, were among the visitors try-scorers to take a good win in the difficult windy conditions.

  • Devon 2 - St Columba Torpoint 22 Argaum Chiefs 22 -- rb, 13:11:05 11/03/03 Mon
    Evening Herald match Report
IT WAS undecided after 80 minutes at Defiance Field where St Columba gave up an early lead and fought back to take a draw in the final stages.

Columba's pack did the groundwork and Gareth Long made the break for Simon Nicholls to go in under the posts after 12 minutes at Torpoint.

Argaum replied almost immediately with a Steve Tomlinson penalty, but as Columba piled on the pressure, a good ball won just inside their half was quickly shipped to Si Nicholls, who ran in for his second try. Flanker John Dowling converting.

Phil Morgan went in unconverted from a short penalty for Argaum, and a series of tap penalties concluded with Dowling kicking for goal to give Columba a 15-8 lead on the half hour.

Argaum responded, as Kevin Quigley picked up a loose ball with Tomlinson's kick to even the score, and just on the 40 minutes a break against the run of play gave Phil Hall the try that stole the lead for the Chiefs. Tomlinson converting.

Argaum put the early pressure on the home defence, who woke up but failed to make any impact until the last minute of the game, when a series of rucks saw centre Karl Long crash over and fly half Craig Walters' kick make it 22-all.

THE Chiefs' preparations for their match with Plympton were hit by availability problems, but their disrupted side still got the first points on the board from centre Phil Hall, with Steve Tomlinson converting.

Stretch King converted twice and slipped over a penalty for Plympton to lead 17-7 at the break.

Early in the second half, King added another penalty, and by return centre Phil Morgan slipped through the Victoria defence, with Tomlinson making it 20-14. Argaum's joy was short lived as Plympton bounced straight back with King slotting his third conversion.

The home side pressed and number eight replacement, Mark Matthew, was driven over the Plympton line but the kick from wide out went astray.

Argaum laid on the late pressure, but were caught off guard with an interception try.

Plympton took their first win of the season with tries from scrum half Neil Wright, centre Taff Oakley, flanker Gary Livingstone and winger Gareth Espin.
