  • From tonight's Herald -- rb, 13:40:03 09/14/01 Fri
Plymouth Argaum captain Andy Critchley has said overconfidence on the part of the visitors could be the key to victory in his side's RFU Junior Vase first-round tie against Saltash (3pm).
Critchley recognises the fact that his team have been handed a tough fixture against last year's Tetley Bitter Vase quarter-finalists, even though they have home advantage.
But he is still hoping to continue the form that saw Argaum beat Old Tech's II 32-20 last weekend.
He said: "There's a few players missing, but we've still got a strong side out, and they might be too confident about the win."
But Critchley added: "It's an unfortunate tie to have in the first round."
However, Saltash supremo Doug Lawrence has said that his side will be taking nothing for granted, even though he hopes they can reach the latter stages of the competition.
Lawrence said: "We're there for people like Argaum to have a pop at us – they'll be up for it and we're not going to underestimate them."
Saltash reached the last 16 two years ago, and went one stage further in last season's event, but Lawrence was unwilling to make any semi-final predictions.
He added: "We're looking to progress but you can't say that – I learned long ago not to prophecise. I'm hopeful of a result."
All Argaum players should report at the club at 1pm sharp.

  • He's Back!!!!! -- SJB, 19:33:50 08/01/01 Wed
Just come back from a tour to South Africa with those awfully nice chappies from the IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF MEDICINE. I must say that they had an awfull time on tour having to play 7 (seven!!!) games in all. They won most of them though but did lose to the University of Capetown.

There I was discussing the finer points of touring with their director of rugby coaching, "Dave", who didn't believe me when I told him that on the 22 tours that I can remember I had failed to win any game!

Then blow me down, (or up if you like madam), I get home to find that Argaum won on tour.

There is only one thing left to say,

    £%"^ ME!!!!

    Regards to all,
    Barney

P.S. Anybody else happened to have read about the tours to Argentina & Chile for £250 full package in rugby world???

  • From the Gwlad Messageboard (see below) -- rb, 14:42:10 05/17/01 Thu
    Anyone remember this game?

"Strange but true!!!! -- Big Wil, 12:59:52 05/17/01 Thu
I wanna hear from all u rugger playing guys(sorry kiwi, and You if u like)about the strangest match you ve ever played in and the strangest penalty given against you. I once played in a college game on a sunday morning the day after the Spring Ball Pissup, when only 9 of us turned upa nd we acyually played a full 80 minute game against Plymouth Arguam ( local Farmers hard bastard side ) all 15 of 'em and only lost 36-6 ( and yes that was a try!!)
Also got penalised in a game for merthyr while playing openside for looking at my opposite number in a lineout in a 'nasty manner'???? Me? In this suit ?? With My reputation!!!??
    So whats your stories????"

  • The Beer Prayer -- Tippsy, 08:38:31 05/11/01 Fri
    Our lager,
    Which art in barrels,
    Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk, (I will be drunk),
At home as it is in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
    And forgive us our spillage,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
    But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, the bitter, and the lager.
    Barmen.
