Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Another photo story episode today, so let's get right to it!
Returning for today is our old friend Irish13 with part 18 of is WWII OSS photo story, starring Lt. Cal Lee, continued from photo set 3621.
In this episode, ol' Cal comes across a lost downed British Airman, then attends that Belgian resistance meeting that we learned of in the last episode, and even captures himself a sneaky German spy! As always, more cool photos from our old friend. So if you've been following Irish13's OSS story like I have, then definitely be sure to check out this cool new episode. Special thanks to Irish13 for sending this new one in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

CK2 knew the answer, Robert E Lee was Lincoln's first choice to head the US Army/ In fact, Lincoln offered the job to Lee, who turned him down and sided with his Virginia roots, and lead the Confederate Army for the duration of the war. As noted by others, Lincoln couldn't settle on a second choice for quite some time, until circumstances prompted him to appoint Grant.
It is thought that R E Lee might be the only person to have been offered command of both armies in the same war.
Today's question: Who was the highest ranking Union officer killed in the Civil War? Bonus, what where his last words:

Hey guys, I know I posted this message before but I wanted to do it again. I was wondering if any of you have any old Sideshow or Cotswold Civil War muskets, Sharp's rifles or carbines or old Army revolvers you're not using ?
There is stong talk of a huge photo shoot going to happen in Ohio. Collectively, we can probably pull together 15 cannons, 50 plus horses for cavalry and maybe over 150 troops for infantry. We are talking major battle scenes here !!! LOL !!!
I've also dug out my old Power Team Command Center and have an idea I could mabe turn this into a little Gone With The Wind, Tara. Some paint, maybe curtains in the windows, new carpet, some home furnishings and such. What do you think GL. Is this do-able ???? I'm remembering back to the old days when you did you French Underground shoot at the chataeu... Remember ????
Drop me a line if you guys can help an old Seabee out. I don't think I have anything you want for trade but we still have money to barter with. Mention Muskets in the subject line of the email.
CK2, out.

rich and Tank Mechanic teamed up for the right answer: Queenie Bennett gave her fiance George Dixon a $20 gold coin for luck as he went off to war. THe coin saved Dixon's life once, deflecting a Union Bullet. Dixon carried the coin on board the CSS Hunley, which sank with all hands. The coin was found in the wreakage by a team funded by Clive Cussler, and the coin now resides in Cussler's collection.

I'm sad to report on the passing of one of my dear friends this morning. Her name was Evelyn Alexander and she was a great lady. Evelyn was a collector of almost everything. Our common interests were militaria, military miniatures, military prints, military history books and books in general. She fought a long and hard battle with cancer. She was ever the optimist and it brought her through many hard battles. One of the funny stories she told me recently involved her home in New Jersey. Her husband was a WWII Marine war hero who was left wheel chair bound as a result of wounds. He was able to drive but was unable to open and close the garage door. To solve that problem they had a post beside the driveway with a flange on it and what looked like a can attached rigged to control the door. He had merely to drive up to it and push the flange and the garage door would either open or close. One day a lady from Rutgers University came by and knocked on the door. Evelyn answered the door and said hello. The lady from Rutgers said that she wanted to talk to Evelyn about the submarine buried in her front yard and her desire to dig it up. Of course Evelyn didn't know what she was talking about and denied having a submarine buried in the yard. The lady from Rutgers persisted and said that it was obvious that there was a submarine buried there because of the periscope sticking up out of the ground. After sharing some words of wisdom with the lady from Rutgers Evelyn finally convinced her to leave. Then there was the mountain howitzer in the front yard...but that's another story. Please say a prayer for my friend. Thanks guys.

Rich got it right, his very own 37th Iowa Volunteer was a greybeard regiment, made up of men over the age of 45! they fought with honors in the US Civil War and were mustered out at the end with only 3 dead, out of almost 1100 who served, an amazing record.

Hello guys, I am posting on my annual Christmas box that I do for a kid I know. I work with this years kid; “Grayson”. He is totally into WWII and knows ALOT about the war and has FDR speech memorized by heart. He loves everything about WWII especially the Pacific theatre; the marines and ships are his favorite.
I have done this in the past for other kids and had a really good turn out. I know it is kind of like Bears Operation toy box that he does, but not as big. I focus on one child and only that child.
So if any of you guys would like to contribute to "Grayson's" toy box this year by donating any old, used or new WWII toys to make his Christmas extra special this year; do so by emailing me at my email address. I have had a few guys here already email me and notify me of incoming packages for this cause and have gotten some as well.
Thank you for your time bros and thanks for helping out.

Graeylin got half of it while Tank mechanic nailed the other- full-auto burns out the baffles too quickly and you get a HELLISH amount of noise out of the ejection port, regardless of the system used. No SMG uses hypersonic ammo that I am aware of, so the sonic crack does not apply here- this new silencer system mentioned... this is the first I've heard of it, so I couldn't comment on it.

Rich grabs two, knowing that the DC3 was converted into a famous gun ship/platform during the Vietnam war, and that the Liberator pistol actually took longer to load than it did to produce: several seconds of stamping by a machine, and it was done! It was said it took 7 seconds to make the weapon, and 40 seconds to load it.

Carrier pigeons it is!!! In fact, contrary to what you see in "The Longest Day", the poem that NEARLY gave the game away for "OVERLORD" was intercepted from a carrier pigeon shot down by a Wehrmacht Gefrieter armed with a confiscated shotgun specifically for that purpose.
NOW_ remember my tip about spaghetti painted white for cigs? Installation is simple- use a pointy steak knife in the groove between the lips and WIGGLE it in, using small oscillations to enlarge the hole. Stuff the smoke in THE MOMENT the hole is big enough, the plastic will form around the smoke in a natural manner leaving you fellow with a contented puff to keep him amused... the same trick works to put it into his hand between his fingers. AND while I'm on the subject- smoke and the lit end (cherry) can be done with 'PAINT' in a similar method to how we do muzzle flash
NOW- why is 'silencing' a sub-machine gun pretty much impossible?

The Army had pestered him about it for some time, yet (prophetically) he told his brother, "given the way the US Military has to fiddle and fuss with everything I do for them, I won't live long enough to see a nickle of return. True to his vision, the great master 'Laid down his tools' while Aberdeen was making more suggestions.

OK here goes.... Developed as an antipersonnel weapon during the 1950's, they were made from steel, weighed approximately 0.7 ounces (19 grams) and contained no fuze or explosive charge. Designed to shower the target, they were loaded into a container bomb that would release them after exploding thirty yards above the ground. However, in the early years of U.S. involvement in Vietnam helicopter crewmen literally threw bucket loads of them out the chopper's door while flying at speed over enemy positions. They could also be dropped from fixed wing cargo planes or thrown from small aircraft.
Each was fin-stabilized and capable of attaining a terminal velocity of 700 feet per second, which produced penetrating power equivalent to between a 45-calibre slug and a 30-calibre carbine. Ok , what is the name of the projectile I just mention to you?

Well, namdation!!!! El Paso Trooper got it in one!!! Yes the Bazooka was named for a home-built musical instrument made from two pieces of copper tubing telescoping together in trombone fashion with a whiskey funnel at one end- the rocket launcher does bear a resemblance to it. The name comes from "Bazoo', which at the time meant somebody who was quite flatulent (the instrument sounded rather flatulent when played properly).
OK- how much money did John Moses Browning receive from the US Government for his efforts in developing the 37mm automatic cannon? And YES, he DID develop it for the US Government, this is NOT a trick question.

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Only one set today, but it's another photo story installment with a lot of cool photos, so let's get right to it!
Returning for today is our old friend Irish13 with part 17 of his WWII OSS story starring Lt. Cal Lee, continued from photo set 3613. In this episode, ol' Cal takes a walk and runs into some Belgian resistance fighters who look like they want to help him. Some terrific photos in this one, a couple of shots are very realistic looking. More sharp work all the way around from Irish13, so if you've been waiting for the next installment of his cool OSS story and the continuing adventures of Lt. Cal Lee like I have, then be sure to check out this cool new installment. Special thanks to Irish13 for sending this new one in and sharing it with all of us. - Sharp Salute!

Returning for today is our old friend Hogie309 with the next installment of his WWII Town of Marwencol saga, continued from photo set 3612. In this episode entitled "The Heart of Marwencol", we get a story about a strange diamond that goes by the same name. It seems like the town can't be alive without it, and there's some strange Princess running around town too, and we learn her identity in this episode. Also, there's some great pictures of Captain Hogencamp and his tank and as always, Hogie's taken some terrific photos of it all. So if you've been waiting for the next Marwencol episode like I have, then you definitely won't want to miss checking this newest one out. Ok troops, time for the first site update of the week. We'll start off with a couple cool sets today, so let's not waste anymore time and get right to them!
First up for today, our old friend Zman is back with a small set featuring one of his newest Modern era creations. This guy represents a 3/25 USMCR, which was one of the hardest hit units of the Iraq war. Well you guys know ol' Zman always comes up with some sharp looking modern figures and this guy is definitely no exception. Very very cool figure here. Only a few photos of him on display, but if you're into that Modern stuff, Zman's projects are always great to check out. So don't miss this guy! Special thanks to Zman for sending this terrific new project in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

And last but not least for today, our old friend FUBAR (aka Mark V) is back with some photos he took of that Civil War get together that he and Checkmate King 2 did recently. Same setup of course, but FUBAR pictures are much different than CK2s. Where CK2 focused a lot of on the wide shots so you could see everything, FUBAR concentrates mostly on up close tight shots. I have to say that one photos of the guys ramrodding the cannon barrel looks pretty darn close to real to me. I'm glad we got to see more great pics of this setup. I sure hope these guys do that again soon. Special thanks to FUBAR for sending these cool shots in and sharing them with us. Sharp Salute!

Marines wear RED piping due to the fact that their traditions run to the 'Marine Gunners' traditions of the 17th century Brit Navy where a sailor trained as a gunner wore the stripes of Artillery to designate their status. Later in the game, these selfsame professionals became the boarding parties and fired enfilade from the riggings of their own ships... thus beginning the traditions of "baddest of the bad and ugliest of the ugly"
Now- what WWII weapon was named after a musical instrument?

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Only one set today, but a pretty darn interesting one for all you Star Wars fans, so let's get right to it!
Up for today is our old friend Mikey with more of his cool custom figures. In this set we get to see some of his Star Wars creations. Not only does he have some great looking figures in this set, but he also did some really amazing work customizing some 21st weapons to make them suitably sci-fi for his Star Wars guys. Very creative stuff here, I would have never thought about putting all those bits and pieces together. I think Mikey mentioned that a couple of the Jedis had some 21st bodies too, but the heads had been replaced I think. As always, some fantastic work from Mikey and more great looking figures. So if you're into that Star Wars stuff, be sure to check this one out! Special thanks to Mikey for sending these cool projects in and sharing them with us. - Sharp Salute!

- Pretty nifty, like okimbored, I not a big fan, but Mikey, you have perfectly captured that franchise's design team's weapons style, a kind of retro WWII or earlier, with odd looking sci-fi attachments of questionable function, I got to hand it to you, it's spot-on STAR WARS, but your own take on it! Very nice job, really creative, all the way around, looks like you had fun. I had fun checking it out, thanks for sharing your cool snaps . (NT) -- TC, 01:12:07 09/17/08 Wed

11B1SG, i don't show that MG Dixon held every rank, just every officer rank. So, I will let the question stay open a bit, and maybe your sources will come through?
LG got the clothing question right: THe Crimean war is responsible for three articles of clothing, still worn today. Bonus points for naming the three articles...
Today's question: Who said this (about the American Civil War): "The civil war began in my dining room and ended in my parlor."? Bonus points for WHY he said it.

Hmmm.... the firearm in question was actually a very reliable and well thought out piece of gear- the PRICE TAG is what caused sooo much trouble, because in exchange for his patent, Ambrose Burnside was made a GENERAL, thus guaranteeing the Union fiasco at Fredricksburgh and nearly throwing the war...
... now- why do marines wear red piping on their dress uniforms?

Ah, my new questions are killin' the field.. Lots of stumpers from last week, including Friday's question, what war was responsible for introducing three items of clothing that are still worn today, frequently by civilians.
Today's question: Who is the only recipient of the Victoria Cross to hold every rank, from Private to Major General?

RIch got it right, the Sussex regiment was massacred three times in their history, in 1745, 1755, and 1840.
Today's question: (and you can spend the weekend trying to get the stumpers answered from earlier):
What single war gave rise to three articles of clothing, still worn today?

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Again, only one set today, but it's a huge one with slightly more than 50 photos in it. So lots to see today, let's get right to it then!
Up for today is our old friend TC with another super cool outdoor photo shoot from him. It seems like he loaded up the car with all the 1/6th stuff it would hold and drove out to an awesome location to set up a very cool multi figure, multi vehicle modern photo setup. This one features the 21st Bradley, the 21st SEAL Jeep and the Hasbro Humvee, along with a bunch of great looking modern troops. Again, like last time, they seem to be just moving across the landscape in vehicles and on foot. I really love that location that TC found, boy, I could so some photo shoots there, that's for sure. Of course, all TC's troops, setups and vehicles are looking really sharp with that background. So if you're into those multi figure photo sets like I am, then this is definitely a must see! Special thanks to TC for hauling all that stuff out there and taking the photos to share with all of us. Sharp Salute!
