- 75th Ranger REcon boxed figure question -- Pistol Pete, 19:18:45 08/09/08 Sat (NoHost/96.233.203.101)
Here's a question for the board-- if anyone can answer it, I figure one of you troops can. I picked up a 21c 75th Ranger Recon boxed set and when I opened it up, there was a decal floating loose in the blister packaging. It is a small 75th ranger logo including a dagger, skull, ranger scroll, and parachute. Anyone know where this decal is supposed to go?
I figure it was stuck to something hard plastic, and that's why it came loose. Maybe the bottom of the patrol cap? It hought it might go on the bright orange luminous panel on the underside of the patrol cap. See picture in this page of photos, halfway down on the right:
http://www.pistolpetechecklist.com/75thrangerrecon.html
Any intel would be appreciated. Thanks for the read!
Pete

- Thanks for the intel, guys! I'm guessing the underside of the cap is the way to go, as the T-shirt already has the ranger logo on it. It would be odd, I think, to add a decal to it. (NT) -- Pistol Pete, 10:31:03 08/11/08 Mon

Sgt horvath was close: the USAF developed Project Pluto, which was to be an unmanned ballistic missile powered by a deliberately UNSHIELDED nuclear reactor engine. It could cruise at under 1000 feet high, at mach speeds, and circle the earth for months, if needed, delivering up to 100 hydrogen bombs anywhere the USAF deemed necessary. THe shock wave alone from the huge missile was thought to be able to destroy buildings and pressurize people into paste, and the nuclear waste spewing out of the engine guaranteed those who survived the passing would be radiation victims soon enough.
Luckily, it was never tested.
Today's question: What was the objective of Operation Dracula in WWII?

Steve wood got it right, the Davey Crockett was a nuclear bazooka, or more likely, a nuclear warhead mortar. The effective range of the mortar was 400 meters, the kill zone of the radiation was estimated to be 350 to 390 meters. To operate, one had best get a good tail wind.
Today's question:
In the late 1950's, the USAF designed a weapon system that was likely the inspiration for a later Star Trek episode. What was the name of the planetkiller system they designed, and how did it work?

Remember those figures you asked about a few weeks back? Well I finally came across something that has them in it.
Lazy Bonz(I take it this is the brand)made 3000 pieces and the title of the line is called Realm of the Rodent. There was Cycket, the Mouse and Otak the Rat. The price then was $74.99 for the set. Good luck finding some.

Ok troops, time for the last site update of the week. Another photo story episode, so let's get right to it!
Returning to wrap up this week is our old friend Irish13 with the next episode of the wacky misadventures of that killing machine, Lt. Cal Lee :) ,continued from photo set 3579. In this episode Lt. Lee needs to sneak into a nearby town and notices that most of the Germans have pulled out except for just a handful. A perfect opportunity for some more killing :) Another cool episode here from Irish13. Some terrific setups and some sharp camera work. I'm really looking forward to seeing, as always, what Lt. Lee gets into next. For now though, be sure to check out this cool new episode. Special thanks to Irish13 for sending this one in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

Returning for today is our old friend Hogie309 with the next installment of his WWII Marwencol saga, continued from photo set 3580. Actually, this is a little side story, starring none other than Lt. Cal Lee from Irish13's storyline. You remember Irish13 in the last episode mentioning that he came across Marwencol while he was out on recon, but he didn't enter the town. Well here's a little bit of what happened to him on that recon mission. As always, more cool photos here from Hogie and I thought it was pretty neat the tie in between the two storylines. So definitely be sure to check this one out! Special thanks to Hogie309 for sending this cool new episode in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

Steve and pop combined together to nail some of the bad features: the unit was top heavy, the tracking system would lock on anything, including its own barrel, it had less speed than the tanks it was supposed to support as a tank killer, and it had only 1/2 the range of typical tanks it was supposed to kill (2 mile range versus their 4 mile range). essentially, the Sgt York was a knife in a gun fight.
(and good guess Sgt Horvath, but still not the correct Brit plane)
Today's question:
What was the main hazard of operating a a W-54 Davy Crockett?

well, no correct answer to my quote, so we will let that one stew a while. The harrier is a bit recent for the answer to that question.
Today's question: Sgt York is a hero we can all admire. However, as a weapons system, Sgt York had some major problems: What made the Sgt York such a horrible design/idea in the field?
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][Edit]

- It was top heavy and could tip over for fasst fire and manuever excersizes, and the tracking system cold lock on to any heat source and track it, not just aircraft, jeeps, deer, troops, etc. (NT) -- Steve Wood, 17:01:58 08/06/08 Wed
- The guns didn't work well either. They got a license to copy parts of the German twin 35mm Marder system. Then cut corners by using the M48 tank chassis, the F16 radar system and changed the 35mm guns to existing 40mm guns to continue to use stocks of existing ammo. So, it just didn't go together like the Marder, and the guns did not have the same performance in trajectory, speed, and distance either. It also could not keep up with the M1 design that was just coming to fruition at the time too. (NT) -- Rich, 19:30:17 08/06/08 Wed

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Two more cool sets for today, so let's get right to them!
First up for today, our old friend Zman is back with more of his great modern era desert troops. This time we get to see some "SEALs at war", first Gulf War and present war in Iraq and Mogadishu. If you're fans of Zman's work like I am, then you know he always brings some cool figures to look at and the ones in this set are no exceptions to that. Definitely tought to pick my favorite out of these, but I'm going to have to go with that modern Iraq SEAL in the shades. Pics of them here posing for the camera and on those cool little mini dios of Zolimans. So if you're into that modern US Special Forces stuff, you won't want to miss this one. Special thanks to Zman for sending these in and sharing them with us. Sharp Salute!

And last but not least for today, our friends from the UK, Ghost Recon and his buddy Rob, are back with another small installment of their Vietnam era story, continued from photo set 3573. If you remember from the last episode, the SEAL Pointman emerged from the jungle and was spotted by some NVA. In this episode, he realizes that he can't overpower them himself and disappears back into the jungle, hoping to meet up with the rest of his team and set up an ambush. More nice pics here from these guys, I'm really looking forward to seeing the next episode. Special thanks to Ghost Recon and Rob for sending this new installment in and sharing it with us. First up for today, our old friend 11B1SG is back with his new mini-me figure, version 2, complete with new prosthetic leg. I have to say it's good to see our old friend hasn't lost his sense of humor after his accident. We get to see a lot of different 1/6th stuff around here, but actually I never thought I'd see a 1/6th action figure with a prosthetic leg. 11B1SG has done one heck of a cool job on him. So definitely be sure to go take a peek at him. Special thanks to 11B1SG for sending this cool and unique project in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

And last but not least for today, our old friend Storm is back with another one of his cool D & D style fantasy fighters. This time we get a very bad*** looking Drow Elf assassin. You know I'm a big fan of Storm's work and especially his Drow Elves, but I have to say on this figure he's taken it up a notch. Everything is handmade on this figure except for the figure itself, the boots and the gloves. And believe me, there is lots of little handmade stuff here. I really like the blow gun & needles strapped to his leg. (At least I think that's what that is). Some fantastic work here and if you're a fan of those D & D style figures, I have to say this one is must see stuff. So be sure to check him out. Special thanks to Storm for sending this cool project in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

k.43 and Sgt Horvath were the first to nail the answer: the Ontos system was a tracked, multi-recoilless rifle platform that never made it successfully. Besides being small, high profile, and underpowered, it carried only two reloads of ammunition, and the operator had to exit the protection of his vehicle in order to load. Which would have to be done after firing and making a HUGE display of yourself, attracting a lot of attention to your location.
TOday's question:
"The most beautiful sound in the world is the sound of a XXXXX taking off, because it means you aren't IN the damn thing."
What disastrous aircraft were British Pilots refering to with that often bandied quote?

El Paso Trooper got it right, the Italian 1877 field gun was a horrible weapon: It had no recoil mechanism, and basically rolled backwards against a block of wood shim. it could not be traversed, so aiming required moving the entire unit, and it weighed 5 tons, so moving it wasn't easy!
Today's question:
what made the Ontos Tank Destroyer such a bad idea?

Ok troops, time for the first site update of the week. Only one set to start off with, but lots of cool stuff to see. So let's get right to it!
To start off this week, our old friend One Shot is back. It seems like he took another trip over to our friend Azteca's house to see what new stuff he had on display. I have to say it's always great to see Azteca's collection. Massively impressive and a drool fest for sure. In this set, we get to see Azteca's new Dark Knight Joker from the new movie, more of his cool Mexican wrestlers (which he has a ton of now), and much much more. One Shot also brought his 21st America's Finest figures along to get those in some shots. No action stuff, just posing for the camera, but it's always cool to see the 21st America's Finest line, in my opinion. So definitely be sure to go and take a peek at this one! Special thanks to One Shot for sending this cool photo shoot in and sharing it with us, and of course to Azteca for letting us have another peek at his awesome collection. Sharp Salute!

During a recent phone conversation with Rich, he said he would send me some plastic sheet samples that I could use for scratchbuilding. Well, the package arrived the other day, and to my surprise, there was a new 21C .30 cal machine gun included in the package!!! WOW! I have been searching for this weapon here in Pittsburgh, but to no avail. Now, thanks to Rich, I have one---and 21C did a great job on this weapon! THANKS, my friend!!!

RIch found one of the two "fatal flaws" in the Nuclear Bomber 36 engineering/design: the reactor had no solid way to cool down when the bird wasn't flying. El Paso Trooper had the second fatal flaw, the 4 to 10 tons of Lead Shielding needed to keep the pilot and crew safe from the radiation.
Today's question: During WWI, Italy used some 6 inch Model 1877 Field guns, without very much effect. What was so wrong with that artillery piece?

Ok troops, time for the last site update of the week. Another cool one, so let's get right to it!
Returning to wrap it up is our old friend Hogie309 back for the second time this week with the next part of his WWII Town of Marwencol saga, continued from photo set 3576. In this episode after the town has been liberated, the wounded get patched up and some refreshments are served in kind of a little victory party. As always, some fantastic photos here from ol' Hogie. He sure does know how to take one. Not much fighting action going on in this one, but as always, more superior figure posing and setups from our old friend. So definitely be sure to check out this cool new episode from him. Special thanks to Hogie309 for sending this one in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

k.43 got it right and sgt horvath fleshed out more details. the ross rifle could be assembled with the bolt in the wrong position, allowing it to fy back to the user's face when fired, and there was little way to tell. It was much hated for that and for jamming at every opportunity.
Today's question: what huge engineering problem did the NB-36H have to overcome to be feasible, and why was this plane never successful?

Played it smart on Sunday, kind of, and left the credit card at home and took only a couple of hundred dollars with me. I was wanting to get some different sights for my G17 Glock and a couple of odds and ends for the AR. Since I live only a couple of miles from the fairgrounds I figured I would just ride my bicycle there and save the $5 parking fee. So on goes the duty belt with the Glock in it and across the back goes the AR and off I went. A police car pulled up next to me at a stop light and the officer asked me where I was going and when I told him the gunshow he just said have fun. I later saw the officer in there buying some stuff and he thanked me for telling him about it as he had forgotten there was one this weekend. I rarely ever have any problems when I'm riding but on this ride cars gave me wide berth on the 2 lane road to the fairgrounds, did'nt honk, drivers did'nt yell "Get on the sidewalk" (that is'nt there) and the drivers were quite polite although a bit wide-eyed. I think from now on I'll ride well armed, I just feel safer that way. LOL!

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Another photo story installment for today, so let's get right to it!
Returning for today is our old friend Irish13 with the next installment of his WWII OSS photo story, continued from photo set 3570. In this episode, Lt. Cal Lee dons his local garb and slips into the nearest town. He sets himself up as a local drinking some wine, smoking some cigarettes and minding his own business. Well, that doesn't last long when a German happens by and starts messing with him. Again, another cool episode here from Irish13. I'm still anxiously awaiting to see what ol' Cal Lee is after for his mission though ;-) So if you've been following this cool WWII story like I have, then be sure to check out this newest episode. Special thanks to Irish13 for sending this one in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

OK- no takers on that one that were close. The US had a heavy and a light gun designed by the grand master, John Moses Browning- namely the 1917 water-cooled AND the BAR! Both guns were SOOOO radically superior to ANYTHING on the battlefield that American Generals were paranoid of what might happen should the Kaiser's men get hands on one! Even the Lewis was removed from US inventory (for reasons yet to be validated) and the chauchat was substituted. A SMALL number of BARs managed to get to the front before armisice, and it seems that this was to experiment with the concept of "walking suppressive fire" when Germany was clearly on the ropes.

A couple weeks ago, you'll probably remember on the board Wildcard talked about buying those Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin figures and that you might be able to strip those clothes off for use with your pirates or Colonial bashes and customs. Well, he sent a few photos of them in so you can get a closer look at them. Shoot, I thought the headsculpts were pretty darn good. If you can find these guys cheap, they would probably be a good buy. Special thanks to Wildcard for sending these photos in.

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Only one set today, but it's definitely one I've been waiting for. So let's get right to it!
Returning for today is the next installment of Hogie309's Marwencol saga, continued from photo set 3569. In the last episode, you'll remember Hogie and his band of misfits had finally found their tank, and after refueling and reloading her, those German tank thieves showed up to do the same thing. Of course, Hogie and his group manage to overpower the Germans and got an idea on how to get into Marwencol, by disguising themselves as those Germans. In this episode, we pick up right where we left off as Hogie and the gang swap uniforms and head for Marwencol. I don't want to give too much of the rest of the story away here, so I'll just simply say another fantastic episode here from Hogie. This is a big one too, with lots of great photos in it. You won't want to miss it! Special thanks to Hogie309 for sending this awesome new episode in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

Rich got it right, Simms-Dudley designed an air propelled dynamite gun, an artillery piece with several flaws: High angle of delivery, lack of power, and lack of range. In fact, the range of the artillery piece was roughly that of a man with a typical rifle, meaning that if you could fire on them, they could fire on you...usually more accurately!
Today's question: The british home guard were outfitted with weapons called "Northover Projectors". What was the most expensive part of the weapon to manufacture?

Ok troops, time for another cool site update from our fellow men in the field. Two cool sets today, so let's get right to them both.
First up for today, our old friend Checkmate King 2 is back with more of his awesome Civil War photos. In this set, we get to see some of his Union and some of his Confederates battling each other on Little Round Top, Gettysburg. Of course, we all know how cool CK2's Civil War troops are, but he's chosen a fantastic location and I swear if it wasn't for the occasional action figure wrist joint here and there, you'd swear these guys were reenactors. Another terrific Civil War set here from our old friend. And if you're a fan of this era, you definitely won't want to miss this cool new photo set from him. Oh yeah, he even added some bonus shots of his Confederate General John Hunt Morgan on horseback. Special thanks to Checkmate King 2 for sending this one in and sharing it with us. Sharp Salute!

And last but not least for today, our old friend Warriors 1st BN is back. Just some random stuff in this one that he's been working on. The shoot starts off with a cool 1/6th Ferrari that he bought off of eBay, then we move onto a T-Virus container that he made from a fuse, then from there, we move onto some cool 1/6th swords and axes that he made, then we get some wide shots of his awesome Flash Force base, man - that's one big setup - then we finish off with another one of those cool 1/6th guitars that Warriors scratch builds. This time, the axe used by guitarist Zakk Wylde. Another great batch of projects from our talented young friend. So be sure to check them out!
