Howdy oo7. I haven't bought anything other than loose gear and a few Power Team figures in years. For loose modern 21stC stuff, I still see quite a bit listed on Justice Fighters, and some on Monkey Depot. To answer your question about figures for your son, I would suggest checking out a Big Lots store if you have one close to you. That's where I buy my World Peacekeepers Power Team figures, but I think some stores just carry them for the Christmas season. The basic figures with gear were $13 when I checked on them last week.
