I would just like to say how amazed i was to see the varied skill of prop forward adam pegler in the rtb game. not only was he blasting kicks over from the half way line( as if this isnt enough on its own). HE ALSO carried out a forward roll whilst taking the ball up which had the crowd bowing down in a simultanious chorus of 'were not worthy'. Surely this man belongs in the circus not on the pitch. What a man! keep it up monkey boy.

Supporters Bus -- Haydn, 20:14:29 12/24/05 Sat
There will not be a supporters bus for the Talywain Friendly on Thursday, however the team bus is a 52 seater and all supporters have been invited to use it, leaving the Penndragon at 1.15pm and returning normal timeish. See you all for a festive furkin.

Very dissapointing that the Ospreys are going to make a robust defence against the citings of Ian Evans and Gavin Henson. While in Henson's case it may have been retaliation, the Ospreys are lowering themselves by defending dirty play. What example does this portray to the youngsters who play and follow the game?

- I agree Graham - No-one should condone foul play, but my opinion on these specific cases is that they are not clear cut. Evans did clearly kick back which caught Ellis but did he actually see Ellis and was it that malicious as it caught him on the leg? The fact that Ellis was apparently badly injured (though his knee was already strapped) is irrelevant. I suspect he will get a ban in the order of six weeks. Henson's is even more complicated. The elbow I don't believe was intended to be malicious but rather an instinctive thing if something is coming to clobber you from behind. As for the "kick", from the other angle it seems as if he was simply kicking his way out of being held around the socks. I may be wrong. That is why the hearings are right I believe. Change in fortunes -- The Sec, 11:07:57 12/19/05 Mon
For those who have not been to the park in recent weeks, you've missed a feast of running rugby. Over the years we have not been noted for our try scoring prowess, however the last three matches have seen us score 15 tries. Some of these tries have been of the top order with exilerating, spectacular tries scored from deep in out own half.

Should we not achieve promotion, which does seem doubtful unless sides above us slip up, then lets keep this super rugby flowing as it certainly keeps us hard core supporters happy.

- Yesterday's results went well for us if we are to sneak a chance of 2nd place (I think Machen will go up as champions) - Gwernyfed lost at home to Usk and Bettws also lost at St. Joseph's. Remember though this season the 2nd placed team has a play-off I believe not automatic promotion. If we can play like we are and remain injury free, perhaps we can still grab the runners-up spot! There will be no supporters bus to Ebbw Vale on Saturday but don't panic!!!!. The team have got an extra large bus with bucket fulls of room and we are all invited to travel with them. The bus leaves the Penndragon at 12.30pm and will leave at approx 5.30pm. Bub will be travelling with us - it must be Christmas.
Will someone please tell Terry Randle, Lyn Morgan and Ian Mitchell the new time plus anyone else who wants to travel.

Congratulations again to the team and coaches on another fine win despite numerous injuries through "strains and pulls." The tries were first class due to a combination of individual flair and team support play. Dean's goal kicking was again exemplary considering his injury.
Looking forward to another three points at R. T.B. Ebbw Vale.We should also say well done to St Joseph's on their running play.

- Was not quite up to the Caldicot performance as we lost too much ball in the tackle, but Joes were a better team than them and we did well to win through deservedly. I suspect it's too late for a push for going up as the top teams will lose fewer games after such good starts but only Blaenavon and Gwernyfed away were really convincing defeats and who knows with the spirit and more importantly the style of play at the moment, perhaps we can win the vast majority of our games and get amongst them. Caldicot Win -- Mike Cox, 16:47:57 12/05/05 Mon
It was only my 2nd visit to The Park this year; I endorse the comments of Graham. The support play by forwards and backs was excellent, hanging on to the final pass however is vital, and when we do the 50 mark will be attained with ease.

I am sure Nicky appreciated the added experience of Dean Thomas and Neil Hoskens around him, everyone contributed to a team performance. There appears to be an ever improving blend of youth and experience which should pay dividends in the 2nd half of the season.

The playing service is a credit to Dave Turner and his team, in years gone by the game would have never been played with all the rain we had last week.

All the best to the team and coaches for the Christmas period, I hope to get down The Park again before the end of the season. Lets hope a few more supporters turn up as we rack up the wins.

The interpassing between the forwards and off-loading in the tackle was particularly good.

There`s not much between most of the sides in our division this year. If we could build on this win we still could be in with a shout for promotion." Ever the eternal optimist!"

I have treid the link for your fixture sec and it isn't working.

Firstly congratulations to everyone involved with the Green and Whites.

I am the Coach/Captain/Nanny of London Welsh Wizards. We are the 1st AMATEUR team at London Welsh and very much a semi serious social side. I also grew up in Abertillery (when the Leisure centre was new) and my mother is from Queen Street and my father who was once a vice president of yours was from Cymtillery and played full back for Aber a long time ago. I would love to arrange a game against you to fulfill a childhood dream of playing at Abertillery Park.

If it could be sorted for this season, April time, that would be great, but I appreciate this may be difficult.

I would be grateful if someone would email the relevant contact detials so we could try and arrange this. I would anticpate bringing down about 25 guys.

Saturday 29TH october we saw the turning point in youth rugby at abertillery.They took on a very powerfull looking Chepstow unit.The pack was under pressure for most of the game but stuck to the task very well.Lots of hard tackleing and some slick handleing of the ball saw the youth get there just rewards.All the youth coaching staff are very proud of the effort the boys put in as they can only build on the performance, they gave 100% well done lads see you all on tuesday for training.

Just a quick point from last Saturday's game. I noticed from my very high vantage point a nice piece of sportsmanship from Jamie Brown our right wing. A few minutes earlier he had brought off a very good, fair but hard tackle on his opposite number who crashed into the railings it seemed. At the next break in play, Jamie motioned and chatted to the guy to check that he was OK. In a sport where sometimes cheap shots can go in, I thought that was a nice gesture. Well done.

It was encouraging to see some of last year`s players returning against Machen.
The coaches however shoud consider swapping number`s 10 and 15 as a matter of urgency.

- Think the team is playing well at times - though we need to look at our tactics - and no-one can criticise the effort whatsoever. the only game we never looked like winning was at Blaenavon. All the other defeats and the Usk draw could have been wins. I agree I would look at Dean Thomas at OH and Carpy at full back. Tonight i watched the Gwent Dragons under eighteens down at Abergavenny against their Blues counterparts. the game was supposed to be played at Cardiff but the ground was waterlogged, so an alternative ground was saught. the dragons comittee approached Blaenau Gwent council to see if they could use Abertillery park.The council agreed it was playable but to my astonishment i heared that Abertillery BG comittee refused the use of the floodlights. iam apalled to hear this as a keen rugby enthusiast what are these people up to they say they want to support youth rugby in the town and then they come up with this crackpot descision.the Dragons are due to play more rugby to the town ,but iwould not be surprised if they took their trade elsewhere the dinosaurs that are ABGRFC deserve no better.Wake up to the real world you are mid table division five not the Ospreys.

- Snowy, I know nothing of the situation you report here but I see that you say you have heard about this, i.e it is hearsay. It may be untrue - I don't know. Before trying to belittle the club as "dinosaurs" and only Division Five etc on a public forum, perhaps a more balanced view is required I suggest. I hope someone from the committee involved in this decision (if they were indeed) will give their side of the story on ths site as well. I think the club has tried to very encouraging of the Dragons development sides to date when they have played at the Park. (NT) -- Dai, 14:52:10 10/27/05 Thu
  - I see that the secretary has now answered above. It confirms what I said in that I know that the club has been very enthusiastic and positive in helping the Dragons. There is a balancing act with the club's own interests however as the Sec states and we have to be mindful of that as well.   - I can only run the senior section part of things due to constraints on time and the fact that on Saturday's naturally enough I watch the senior side for reports. Hi everyone,

How are the injuries coming on in the front row? I only ask because (as well as caring about the boys obviously!) I am thinking of arranging to stay up in Aber for a few pints rather than drive back to Swansea. I just wondered if there was any danger of the game saturday being off as well - not knowing the seriousness of the injuries.

Let me know if there is any news - hope the match will be on - looking forward to a pint.

Thought this was a good win on a number of levels. Most pleasing for me was the way the pack refused to be bullied. They had some big lads and one or two were clearly used to getting their own way. However, as is the case with most bullies, once we got in their faces and just got on with the rugby they didnt like it. The ref should take some credit for getting in early with some penalties for raised elbows in the tackle and indiscriminate use of the slipper in the rucks. About as good a refereeing display as we will see at this level I reckon.

Back to our boys though - good leadership by Brooksy as well as some superb efforts in the back row (Nicky- take a bow especially). My man of the match for what its worth was our loose-head prop though (sorry don't know name) - he was under pressure early but was loving it by the end - their boy was dying to get off the park by the final whistle - well done mate. To see a comparatuvely young pack refusing to be put off their rugby by bullies and remain organised and focused was real pleasure to watch. Testament to Rossy too.

I have even managed to persuade the current Mrs Pugh to spend an afternoon and evening in the club at the next home match (1st October?). Lovely.

The lads should take a bow for their performance on Saturday, travelling to St Albans without nine players out due to injuries and unavailability it would have been easy to throw in the towel. What a difference to their performance against St Joseph's where without taking credit away from the opposition, we just did not compete after the early try.

Saturday will be a tough ask against Corus, the early pace setters in division two south west they scored 80+ points last Saturday in their division and top their league with three wins out of three. However never underestimate the underdog and we usually raise our game against perceived better sides. In this case the result doesn't matter its all about the performance and how we continue in our division with obviously a view to the desired promotion place.

As acting skipper in the unfortunate absence of Ieuan Brooks may I on behalf of the players, thank you wholeheartedly for your continued support so far. Granted we are only 4-5 weeks into the season but its VERY uplifting for players and coaches alike, especially last weeks "treck" to deepest, darkest West Wales!!!!! Abertillery BG Match Report -- Green & White through & through, 11:03:39 09/26/04 Sun
Abertillery BG RFC fail to turn pressure into points

Abertillery BG RFC travelled to Crymych who compete in division 4 west for their first round SWALEC cup-tie and although battling well returned with a narrow defeat.

Crymych playing with a strong wind at their backs made the early breakthrough when former Welsh Youth International Emyr Williams kicked a penalty goal to give the home side a three point lead. Mark Williams responded in fine style when he replied with penalty goal to level the scores, however a mistake from the restart gifted Crymych a dropped goal opportunity that they gratefully accepted.

With the strong wind taking its toll Crymych were able to return any loose ball with interest and scoring opportunities were soon to follow, firstly a further penalty goal was converted followed by the first try of the match which was scored wide out on the corner flag. Abertillery BG did however have the last say of the half when Mark Williams kicked his second successful penalty goal. The first half ending with a 14 point to 6 advantage to the home side.

Abertillery BG now having the wind at their backs must have fancied their chances of winning the game but within barely a minute of the second half having started poor tackling by the division 5 side let Crymych in for a simple try and conversion.

Far from the young Abertillery side heads dropping they responded by camping on the Crymych line and only desperate defence stopped the rampant pack taking control. This pressure ultimately paid off when Gareth Collier barnstormed his way over the line for a deserved try duly converted by Mark Williams.

It now seemed that Abertillery had a strangle hold on the game as they were dominating possession and territory, however an unfortunate turnover when on attack saw Crymych speculatively hack the ball down field for some relief only to catch the Abertillery defence napping and the Crymych saviour of the day Emyr Williams romped away to score a try against the odds.

Although the match now seemed lost Abertillery BG stormed back into attack from which Adam Pegler scored a consolation try once again converted by Mark Williams. Now deep into injury time Abertillery needed to gain possession from the restart if they were to snatch victory, unfortunately over exuberance led instead to a penalty being conceded and with the final kick of the game Crymych scored the last three points.

As I understand it from David Mason, Ieuan Brooks has broken his tibia, dislocated his ankle and suffered nerve and ligament damage. He has had a plate inserted at hospital where he is being attended to.

I am sure that everyone connected with the club sends him our good wishes and hopes for a succesful recovery.

- Agreed - it was good to grind out the win even though the team wasn't firing on all cylinders. It's going to take time to gel though the pack looks like it could do some damage in this division. There seem to be some good teams though and as you say Nantyglo next week will be very difficult as they won 29-0 at St Josephs. RTB who beat Caldicot last week at home 9-0 got beaten heavily at Bettws. I have got some directions to Crymych rugby club for the cup match on 25th.

Overall directions are to go past Swansea on the M4 and stay on the dual carriageway past Carmarthen and St Clears following signs for Haverforwest. On this road you will go past Whitland, and up a long hill. A few miles after Whitland you will come a roundabout where Narberth is just down to the left ('south' for the geographers) and Cardigan is signposted to the north ('right' for the hard of thinking) off this roundabout. That is the road that will take you to Crymych - its about half way to Cardigan in the mountains. When you get to Crymych you will drop into town past a school on the right and there will be a row of terraces on your left. Go past these and the rugby ground is on the left. If you get to the pub in the middle of town you have gone too far but its a decent place to stop and ask for directions (!)

And remember the feminine deodourant of choice: 'Fishguard'.

Trivia - can anyone confirm or deny that a boy called Robin(?) Davies from Crymych played a couple of times for Aber?

League rugby returned to Abertillery Park with the reformed club, now named Abertillery BG, taking 40 minutes to come to terms with it, being 8-6 down to St Joseph's in the East, before they calmed to win 22-8. "I thought we could do it," said club official Keith Evans. "We had the best of the elements in the second half and Ieuan Davies and Mark Perrett scored tries for us, while Mark Williams, who began league rugby in 1990 for us, returned after twice having broken his leg and he kicked four penalty goals.
Also in that division, Nantyglo's Spencer Cleese scored 15 points in a 45-5 win over Usk, while in the West Swansea Uplands gained a rare 11-3 win over Pontyates and in the North the big clash saw Bala win at Wrexham by 6-0, while Rhayader's debut saw them just lose at Llanidloes. Relegated Birchgrove hit back with a 16-7 win at Porthcawl in the South-West, but new boys Glyncorrwg fell 16-13 at home to Crynant. In the South-East debutants Porth and Penallta had vastly different days as Penallta won 52-0 at Cilfynydd, but Porth just went down 21-17 at home to South Wales Police.

Good to see the "old" regulars in the crowd yesterday, supporting a young team who admitted to suffering from "stage fright" before the kick-off. This was evident during the early stages of the match with far too many unforced errors losing the lads necessary possession.

As the game progressed however more assurity came into their game and this confidence will lift them for future matches.

Once again I must stress that we need to give this young team time to progress and I'm sure the benifits will be reaped. Let's all re-learn how to walk before we run!!

It's far better in league rugby to win and not play well (knowing that the performance can be improved upon) than to play well and end up losers.

This division is all about confidence and growth, we will undoubtedly lose matches BUT we will assuredly win matches also and its nice to come away from the park seeing smiling faces for a change.

On a team note it was great to see the lads all sticking together yesterday evening and not fragment. Grass roots rugby is not all bad, these lads will "die" for the green and whites and their right to play in the leagues. Lets give them the support they deserve and Abertillery Blaenau Gwent RFC will once again flourish.

- Agree that ball retention was a problem in the opening half which led to their try and also allowed them to dictate as we coughed up ball. Once we went in front we were far more controlled and retained possession better which saw us gain the upper hand. Sorry to start a new message on same topic - need the space. I have to totally agree with the sentiments expressed below. We need not only to get to the Park but to be supportive in the true sense of the word when we are there.

I know I am pushing against an open door with the readers here but we have got to remember that we are building and the last thing the lads on the field need is 'helpful' suggestions from the stand about how to improve their game! Positive support is needed. The more of us who are determined to cut out the bad habits of past crowds in giving players and ref (OK, sometimes richly deserved as far as refs go) a hard time, the more those who do will feel stupid by comparison. Lets make the Park a fortress for opposing teams - we can start on saturday.

While I am at it, having spent a short time working for the club in the past I know exactly how hard the backroom boys must have worked over the last year to get the team set-up running again. It can be a heartbreaking business. We need to show our thanks as supporters. If anyone wants reminding just cast your mind back 12 months - I among many must have thought that we would never see the Green and White on the Park again. Hats off to those who have made this forthcoming season a reality.

Anyway - see you saturday. And bring your membership cheques!

Abertillery BG RFC made their first steps towards a comeback when they travelled to Trinant for a friendly last Thursday. Trinant who achieved promotion to division 4 last season were sure to offer stiff opposition, however Abertillery showed enough evidence that they will more than make up the numbers in division 5 this coming season when they narrowly lost the encounter by 27 points to 26, with Trinant ultimately taking the lead with what proved to be the last move of the game.

It a shame but we had to go backwards to progress forwards! We now however have a clear sight of where we want to go....upwards!

We've recruited local lads who want the club to progress for rugby reasons not financial ones (needless to say). This is not to say that all the players who donned the green and white were money grabbers! - far from it.

We must not expect too much too soon, but there is now only one way we can go....UP.

I dare say that we will not be the last club to suffer the fate we suffered last term, but thank goodness we regrouped, reformed and lets now get it right on the field.

Lets support the coaching staff, players and committee in their endevours this season and you never know next season......division 4?!?

There will be two places up for grabs in the Welsh Premiership next season as the Welsh Rugby Union returns to the policy relegation from the top flight. No teams were relegated from the Premiership at the end of last season, with only Lloyds TSB Welsh National League Division One champions Llanharan realising promotion, but the top two teams in the First Division at the end of the 2004/2005 season will be promoted, giving them the chance to rub shoulders with the biggest names in Welsh club rugby.

Of the four teams promoted to Division One - Tonmawr, Bridgend Athletic, Builth Wells and Fleur de Lys - only last season's Division Two West champions Tonmawr will be on home soil on the opening day of the season. They host Glamorgan Wanderers while Division Two East champions Builth Wells face a daunting trip to Narberth.

Division Two East will get off to an interesting start with a host of local derbies to whet the appetite of the fans. Treherbert host Llanwtwit Fardre and Abercynon entertain Ystrad Rhondda, while two of last season's relegated clubs, Rumney and Tredegar meet in Cardiff.

In Division Two West, last season's Division Three West champions Pontyberem will kick-off their campaign at home against Waunarlwydd, while relegated Tondu host Dunvant.

In total there will be two more teams playing in the Welsh Premiership and 17 Lloyds TSB Welsh National League divisions than last season - 233 to 235. Three clubs who started last season - Abertillery, Bangor University and Blaenau Gwent - have dropped out of the league structure, although two of those clubs - Abertillery and Blaenau Gwent - have amalgamated to form Abertillery BG.

In terms of movement between divisions, here are some of the movers:

Blaengarw 3 East to 5 S-East; Abertillery BG (formerly Abertillery) 2 East to 5 East; Ruthin champions of 4 North to 3 S-East; Birchgrove 2 West to 5 S-West; Penygraig 2 East to 3 S-East.

East-West switches are: Amman United 4 S-West to 4 West; Rhigos 4 S-West to 4 S-East; Heol y Cyw 4 S-East to 4 S-West; Swansea Uplands 5 S-West to 5 West.

THE LLOYDS TSB WELSH NATIONAL LEAGUES

DIVISION 1
There are eleven clubs remaining from last season's Division and they are joined by Tonmawr (champions 2 West), Bridgend Athletic (runners-up 2 West), Builth Wells (champions 2 East) and Fleur de Lys (runners-up 2 East). There are 15 teams in the division which means one club will be byed each week.

DIVISION 2
EAST - This comprises eight clubs from last season, with Rumney, Tredegar and Treorchy all joining them after being relegated from Division 1. The promoted clubs are Brynithel (champions 3 East), Newport Saracens (runners-up 3 East) and Treherbert (champions 3 South-East).
WEST - This comprises eight clubs from last season, with Tondu relegated from Division 1. Joining them are Pontyberem (champions 3 West) and Kidwelly (runners-up 3 West), Banwen (champions 3 South-West) and Mumbles (runners-up 3 South-West) and Nantymoel, who have switched from 3 South-East

DIVISION 3
EAST - This comprises 10 clubs from last season, who are joined by Bargoed (champions 4 East) and Blaina (runners-up 4 East) and Rhymney and Dinas Powys, who were both relegated from 2 East.
WEST - This comprises 10 clubs from last season, who are joined by Cardigan (relegated from 2 West) and top three teams from 4 West - Loughor (champions), Pembroke Dock Quins (runners-up) and Llanelli Wanderers (third).
SOUTH-EAST - This comprises 10 clubs from last season, who are joined by Ruthin (Div 4 North champions), Penygraig (relegated from 2 East), Pontycymmer (champions 4 South-East) and Abercwmboi (runners-up 4 South-East).
SOUTH-WEST - This comprises 10 clubs from last season, who are joined by Varde and Aberavon Quins (relegated from 2 West), Cwmgors (champions 4 South-West) and Alltwen (runners-up 4 South-West).

DIVISION 4
EAST - This comprises eight clubs from last season, who are joined by Newport HSOB and Llanhilleth, both relegated from 3 East, Trinant (champions 5 East) and Oakdale (runners-up 5 East).
WEST - This comprises seven clubs from last season, who are joined by Pontarddulais and Gowerton, both relegated from 3 West, Crymych (champions 5 West) and Cefneithin (runners-up 5 West) and Amman United (switched from 4 South-West).
SOUTH-EAST - This comprises seven clubs from last season, who are joined by Taffs Well (relegated from 3 S-East), the top three teams from 5 South-East - Llandaff (champions), Llantwit Major (runners-up) and Llandaff North (third) - and Rhigos (switched from 4 South-West).
SOUTH-WEST - This comprises six clubs from last season, who are joined by the top three teams from 5 South-West - Resolven (champions), Aberavon Green Stars (runners-up) and Tonna (third) - Trebanos and Ystradgynlais (both relegated from 3 South-West). In addition, Heol y Cyw have switched from 4 South-East.

DIVISION 5
EAST - This comprises nine clubs from last season, plus Abertillery BG (new club formed out of an amalgamation of the former Division 1 side Abertillery and the old 5 East club Blaenau Gwent), Caldicot (relegated from 4 East) and St Joseph's (relegated from 4 East).
WEST - This comprises 10 clubs from last season, who are joined by Swansea Uplands (switched from 5 South-West) and Tycroes and Bynea (relegated from 4 West).
SOUTH-EAST - This comprises eight clubs from last season, who are joined by new WRU clubs Porth and Penallta, Cefn Coed (relegated from 4 South-East), Old Penarthians (relegated from 4 South-East) and Blaengarw, who have reformed after dropping out of 3 South-East.
SOUTH-WEST - This comprises eight clubs from last season, who are joined by Birchgrove (switched from 2 West), Cefn Cribbwr and Abercrave (relegated from 4 South-West) and new WRU club, Glyncorrwg.

THE NORTH
Division 4 - With last season's champions, Ruthin, having moved to 3 S-East, the division is reduced to 11 clubs. One team will receive a bye each week. Dinbych (champions 5 North) and Colwyn Bay (runners-up 5 North) have replaced Wrexham and Bala, who are both relegated to 5 North.
Division 5 - Dinbych and Colwyn Bay are replaced by Wrexham and Bala. WRU Districts club Rhayader make their first entry into the National League set-up to replace Bangor University.
