Saw the message reply from Coxy below about a bus from the Pendragon for the Italy match. I would be interested in that but can't see the club notice board from all the way down here in Llangyfelach - could someone put their pint down, and pop over to the notice board and tell me what time it is going and who to see about it?

i have been watching abertillery on and off for nearly 17 years and can remember,as,im sure there are many other supporters who can to,that the last few results have brought back the old feeling of enthusiasm and enjoyment of a saturday afternoon at the park. im not here to put a dampener on present standings but,yes sorry theres a but,things need to be brought up to 2006 modern standards, this does not include on the pitch as the players,captain and coaches are doing a brilliant job,this means the people behind the scenes. i read very often on this website the praise and support given but week in week out when im present at the club there is only one person i see doing all the work. where is the rest of the commitee??? so a small suggestion if i may,if the team are playing well on the pitch and improving all the time it needs its commitee to pull their finger out. and before the comments come back saying " if you can do any better come have a go " and such like i would be more than willing to form a womans commitee like the club had many moons ago.

- Thats not the view I get when I go to the games - Just because people are not visible it does not mean they do not have a role! I know that committee members have a range of jobs to do on match day from the shop, to looking after the ref, to making refreshments for the teams, to putting out the banners, to collecting the post protectors, being available and the medical driver etc etc - personnally I believe that women's committees are a bit stuck in the 70's why have a seperate body???? if you can help let some one know.   - The above replies answer the criticism. The current committee are working hard to complement the fard work and efforts being put in by players and coaches. As was said, those efforts are not always that visible but nevertheless they go on. I am sure that any extra help in nay way - male or female - would be very welcome. The club is in good spirit. - Just to further put you in the picture, the 'small' committee have many things to do on match day from manning the hospitality bar, manning the gates and shop, post protectors,advertising banners etc to be erected, meet with the referree and ensure that his needs are catered for, help out with the kit - clean and dirty, man the hospital car on rota. We're at the park close on 1pm each match day and are frequently the last to leave. Further more we attend all club meetings, District A meetings, District Youth meetings, meetings arranged by Blaenau Gwent Borough Council and WRU development coaches, meetings with the WRU and of course travelling to all these meetings and some attend training sessions as well. Machen Game and the case of the missing Sec -- Ian Mounter, 12:13:16 03/06/06 Mon
Three questions - any idea when the re - arranged match with Machen is scheduled?
Secondly I hope the Aber supporters drank the bar dry with the committee leading the way -otherwise what else did you all do on a Saturday afternoon?
Lastly what did the Hon Sec know that we didn't as he disappeared to go and watch some game involving a team wearing scarlet??
Sounds like high treason to me!
He only has one or two points in his defence he either gets lost easily as he is suffering fom a lousy sense of direction or he is colour blind which is no doubt brought about by too much of the black stuff consumed in the Emerald Isle !!!

I see that Gordon Pritchard of Machen was incorrect in his assertion to Rick O'Shea about the refereeing situation yesterday in saying that Abertillery refused to play. Most unfortunate - he should seek to get his facts correct when making such comments to the camera.

  - There was another referee available at the ground. He however is an Abertillery supporter who had come to see the game as such with no kit. As I understand it, he felt that with such a "big" game as it were that he would be in an invidious position if he were to officiate and so did not wish to do so. Imagine the furore there might have been say had Machen lost to a last minute penalty for example? It was not fair on him in the circumstances. With that in mind we backed his decision and no other referee was available, hence the game was postponed - the right decision in the circumstances. We did not refuse to play. The WRU 'Red Zone Roadshow' -- The Sec, 11:45:58 03/01/06 Wed
The WRU 'Red Zone Roadshow' around their nine Districts will kick-off in Ammanford on Wednesday night.
WRU chairman David Pickering, Chief Executive Steve Lewis and head of group services Tim Burton will address the 21 District F clubs on the build up to, and circumstances surrounding, the departure of Mike Ruddock as Wales national coach. By Friday night the roadshow will have run through three Districts and Pickering, Lewis and Burton will have updated 83 of the 245 member clubs. They will meet Districts J, C and B in the opening three days of next week to take that number to 164.
Dubbed as the 'Red Zone Roadshow', because no questions on the subject will be left unanswered, the WRU will present the facts in the case before throwing the floor open to questions.

"The aim of the roadshow is to provide an open, honest and frank explanation of the rationale behind recent decisions taken by executive staff in relation to Mike Ruddock and his position," said Lewis.

"We will be presenting the same facts to the clubs as we have already presented to the WRU Board of Directors on two occasions. We don't want anyone to be under any misapprehensions as to real facts in this issue." The clear the air meetings will be entirely private and confidential to ensure neither party feels inhibited in the discussions - which is what is meant by the phrase 'entering the Red Zone', terminology often used by the Wales rugby team and coined recently in the national media by captain Gareth Thomas.

"If the clubs want to take the WRU into the Red Zone over this issue then I will be delighted to give them an honest assessment of recent events at WRU headquarters.

"They will be hearing the facts straight from source, so there can be no confusion or misunderstanding based on hearsay. I'm looking forward to getting the truth out there to the people that matter - our members who are the grassroots of Welsh rugby."

Points may well have taken precedence over performance on Saturday and I suppose that was the order of the day.The first twenty minutes were the most dour, boring I`ve been involved in for a LONG time.Goodness knows how frustrated and tedious it was for the superb numbers that ventured to The Park!!!!
Nonetheless, it was a case of "job done".We desperately needed to blow the cobwebs away and when we eventually bonded as backs and forwards AND adhered to our game plan we scored some super tries, simply by grinding them down through phase play.
For Llan, I was impressed with Big Al Conway at 8 and Darren "Shed" Coleman at 10 kept them going forward, but it was our buddy Mark "Killer" Perrot who was my Man of the Match.I know he had a point to prove and certainly did so, especially against such a big and mobile backrow of Lee[who also showed up well], Nicky and Big G.Killer looks to be 5 times sharper and lots fitter so well done to him.
For us, I thought Greg "Doofy" Lane was a deserved website Man of the Match.He put a lot of work in and nicked a few of there line outs against bigger boys.
Behind, Mr Reliable-Lee Bowden again sparkled, reading the game in defence but cutting some superb angles in attack which was often the start of any moves behind.
I notice that next Saturdays opponents Pontypool United are top of their respective league and are racking stacks of points up.Putting a load on Senghenydd this week is no mean feat as they themselves are pushing for promotion.It`ll be a tough test but will be a good yard stick for us to see how far we`ve come plus a good chance to fully utilise the squad we have.

Questions were raised on Saturday re Dodgers kicking capabilities....... but what a cross field kick, some doubted him and assumed that it was a kick for touch gone wrong but not me, the deft skill of the lad is amazing for all to see obviously he's been practising his skills with outstanding results. The way he's progressing the Welsh team will have to watch out, by the time he matures into this new found kicking role he'll probably be 50 but never mind!!

With just five league games left the end of the season is already staring us in the face. Only one more home league match and four away, fortunately Keith has arranged a few friendlies to keep us interested the list is as follows.

I won't be there next Saturday as I'll be partaking of a few pints of the black stuff in Dublin, I'll be thinking of you however. The game will give some of our squad who have recently been unable to break into the team an opportunity to 'strut their stuff' and give the coaches some selection headaches.
All said and done though the league matches are our bread and butter and Machen is coming up next so lets take their 100% record and make a statement of intent for the future.

ALthough a little rusty with some uncharacteristic handling errors a eighth succesive win was achieved. The type of rugby we now play requires continuity of matches. The enforced layoff has not helped in cementing this fluidity of playing style.Nevertheless some exciting periods of play was produced and the win was well earned.

Just popped onto the message board to see if anyone had anything to say - getting fed-up of reading my own messages though.

With a week off last Saturday its now down to the business of keeping up our recent run of victories against stern opposition at Usk, I'm sure we'll be well supported as always. As most of us are now to old and decrepid (thought I'd better say that before Dodgers does) to participate on the field of play lets give our verbal support from the sidelines and cheer the boys to victory..........

Costs me a flaming fortune in telephone charges to find out result.
Zimmer frame needed a 20,000 mile service but now in good working order and anyway could not come - got a cold so could sing on way home.
Will be coming to Aber soon if only to get away from bloody English supporters - some one please come and help me!
Amazing how many of these English supporters come out of the woodwork, most of 'em soccer supporters and know nuffing about the game!

In the not to far distant past I remember the exitement of the Abertillery match day. At 2 o'clock the music would start over the tannoy, summoning all green and white supporters. Now was the time to make my way to the park, walking of course, turning off Oak Street and over the 'black bridge' down onto Glandwr Street to join the throng making their way to the park. I'd pass the band stand and daringly balance over the river at the weir to make my way to the bob bank.

No barriers in sight on the terrace only a mass of supporters awaiting kick-off with great anticipation. I'm just about able to remember the teams decending from the old changing rooms down the side of the terrace onto the park, this soon changed with the building of the new changing rooms by the river.

The roar came up from the crowd as out idols approached the hallowed turf, our three lions resplendant in their green and white hoops rather than the scarlet of Wales or the red of the Lions.... what a sight!

A thing of the past? maybe.... sport on TV on Saturday afternoons an absolute killer, its much better watching a live match, just ask the supporters this season. I'm once again enjoying the exitement of Saturday mornings, we only need the music over the tannoy and I can dream that things are returning to the halcion days of the not to distant past.

My father has just given me his season tickets from season 1946-47 onwards. He always entered the final scoreline and sometimes some comments.

I'm currently transcribing this information onto a database for future reference.

Some interesting snippets:

Season 1946-47 - All Abertillery's games were postponed due to the severe weather from January 18th - March 15th, except the match away to Aberavon on March 1st.

Season 1947-48 - Abertillery lost three players to rugby league, Ray Price, G Parsons & Stuart Llewellyn.

Season 1949-50 - Abertillery changed their colours from their then traditional Blue & White hoops to the current Green & White hoops.

Seasons 1947-1950 - During these three seasons Abertillery undertook a tour during September or October, playing three matches in Cornwall in three days!

This Weeks, (30/01/06), weekly draw numbers were, 5,12, 22,& 23. The first prize of �4628 was not won however the second prize of �25 was shared between Les Norris(Linde) & V. Hart. Next weeks first prize estimation is �4700 with a second prize of �25.

Finally thawed out after Saturday afternoon at The Park.Jesus that wind was a cold, biting affair wasn`t it!!!??

A huge, massive well done to the lads for a job well done against a stubborn but organised Blaenavon side.Thoroughly agree with Graham in that they were probably the best side to visit our picturesque home.Having me dog with me it prompted a few walks up to the patch of grass above the terracing which offers a more panoramic view and you get a better feel for how good a team is from an organisation point.I`ll sound a bit negative by saying that I`m still unsure whether we won the game or Blaenavon lost it for themselves.With a little more discipline they should have scored towards the end, as well as a few other instances of overlaps, wrong decisions, etc,etc.Having said that, wrong decisions were forced upon them by a team defending with such a huge heart, especially at the end.When the referee [who stopped and spoilt any chance of flow in the game!!!] blew his final whistle my fists where SO clenched with delight and relief!!!!!

Again no one player stood out for me, as a collective we did superbly well.Deano Thomas is rapidly turning into Mr Reliable with his goal kicking, especially on such a windy day.Mr Hoskins defies his age and covered every blade of grass.Ieuan AGAIN led the charge of the "heavy brigade", his tackling and generally putting his body on the line was exemplary.

Looking ahead, would have been nice for some of the lower clubs to have done a few favours for us but it wasn`t to be.Wasn`t really surprised that Ynysddu beat Bettws, they`re a good side.I`ve looked at Usk`s results for the last few weeks and they`ve racked up a fair few points.Easy to say it now but I`ve thought for a while that that`ll be the biggest game of the season for us.It`s a big pitch that`ll suit us, although last years 0-0 draw does spring to mind!!!!We must maintain pressure especially when playing the clubs above or immediately below us, primarily as they`ve got games in hand.

Well done lads, lets keep the march going forward!!!!

After another fruitful "sesh" last night all the squad looked keen and eager to continue the rich vein of form in their relentless push up the table.Unfortunately I`m not fit, absolutely gutted to miss any game but when it`s on the Park it makes it even harder to take.At 33 I`d like to play as much as I can!!!! Andrew Mason `n` Lee Bowden form a very solid partnership at 13 & 12 respectively.Craig Meredith was the other casualty as he`s had wisdom teeth extracted.Us apart, were looking good, very good.

I believe the biggest improvement in this years performances compared to last years is the excellent discipline,being shown by what ever 15 players are on the pitch during the game.This time last year when things were going against us and our players questioned the refs decisions we were always on the backfoot,as our back chatting was costing us penalties and yardish.This season when we have come across some strange decisions our players have just got on with the game and left the questions to be asked to either Ieuan or Nicky,we only have to look at the game against St Albans to prove this.So i think all our committee/members/support staff,and our biggest asset our fans should applaud the coaching staff the captain and stand in captains and most of all the player for such a tremendous turn around so well done to you all.

- Right. Whatever team we put out steps up to the line - great to see the result dogged out on saturday. This may well be a two-year campaign so we need to keep a full squad of players happy - a difficult job when everyone wants to play. As long as the supporters/committee/coaches/players stick together we can go far. Saturday will be tough but if we tackle everything that moves we have the strike power to score from anywhere. There is a thread running on Gwlad (the Wales version of this, for the uninitiated) about 'cult' teams. In other words, teams of players who have achieved cult status among the crowd by being crowd pleasers or characters or whatever - not necessarily but perhaps also through talent. I was thinking last night about my Aber nominees and have come up with these so far - fill in the gaps or suggest alternatives.

1 Wayne Ford - just for looks on the opposition faces when he walks on. And that time he collapsed to the floor for no reason vs Swansea in '95 - "ooh me ankle..." (See the video - fantastic - its like he'd been shot from the stand.)

Morning all

Glad that this board is up `n` running at last.I for one missed it!!!

As you`ll see by the message subject, injury has now meant that I am ambidextrous when it comes to bum wiping!!!! After two days of rather awkward right-handed action I`m now back to the comfort zone of left hand, albeit at a struggle.[thought I`d share that with all!!!!]
Paul [Physio/Ambulanceman] Williams had confirmed that I`d hyper-extended my elbow which is one to tell the kids..........and NO they didn`t have it in your day Mr Mason,then again they didn`t have cars, crisps or cod AND everything was in black and white!!!

Thank you all VERY MUCH for the notes of encouragement.Couldn`t train last night as its swollen too bad, but at least the bruisings coming out.Just desperately trying to get to training on Thursday for the big game Saturday.

Moving on from me personally.It was a case of the boys sticking to the task superbly well on Saturday.Neil Hoskins did a superb job at 9, it was just like having a 4 man back-row really.Thought Ieuan again led by example, good old Deano Thomas for banging over the drop goals as and when he did, Gareth didn`t look out of place in the centre but I thought Nick was my man of the match, did you see how dirty he was!!!!??

Rhys Davies should be back for Saturday after missing the game due to his sons birthday plus Damo Attwell will be
available.Myself pending, I think we`ll be up to full quota!!!

Promotion from division 5 - WRU policy -- The Sec, 12:23:52 01/24/06 Tue
I've clarified the promotion issue, it is as follows:-

Division 5 east, south east, south west, west and north, clubs will be distributed amongst 5 divisions aligned as far as possible on a regional basis.

Ignor 5 North as prom/relegation follow different rules that don't concern us.

The champion club in each 5 east, 5 south east, 5 south west and west will be promoted to division 4 level.

In addition, two runners up, with the best playing records, from 5 east, 5 south east, 5 south west and west will be promoted to division 4 level.

To determine which of the runners up shall have the best records the number of matches played will be divided into the total number of league points gained by the club to give a ratio. The clubs with the highest ratio will be promoted.

The structure for next season:

Premier - 14 clubs (2 relegated, a 3rd will play off against the top division 1 side)

Division 1 east and west - 12 clubs each, (one promoted dependant on play-off result, no relegation from division 1 at the end of this season).

Division 2 east and west - 12 clubs each. 3 clubs to be promoted from each division to division 1 east & west. The bottom 2 clubs in east and west to be relegated.

Division 3 east, s.east, west & s.west - 12 clubs each.
Division 4 east, s.east, west & s.west - 12 clubs each.

D3&D4 - champion clubs to be promoted, top 2 second placed sides to be promoted on the same criteria as our division.

2 clubs to be relegated, plus two of the third from bottom sides on playing performance as with 2nd placed promotion.

I hope this makes things clearer - however what will happen if Cardiff come bottom of the premier division??? call me a cynic but it will all probably change as we know from experience!

Just wanted to give a 'Big Up' to the players, coaches and committee of ARFC for their excellent recent results and performances - it's lovely to see it. The team must be in good nick to get a win (and a convincing one at that) at a place like Bettws and with all the on field problems on the day. I had doubted their ability (sorry!) to win crunch games but it seems that the boys have put that behind them - now for the big one this weekend, one more MASSIVE effort and they will really be in the mix.

Big up also to the committee for their excellent support and enthusiasm - speaking from experience support like that goes a long way and is, again, fantastic to see. We - the cricket boys - won the league and cup double (for the first time ever) a few years ago and we were hard pressed to get a 'Well done' out of our committee!

So again well done to everyone from Bling from ATCC - well done to the players, coaches, supporters and committee for creating such a feel good atmosphere and long may it continue in the years to come.

All the best on Saturday - I was even tempted to give up my golf for a weekend to come and watch the boys - give 'em what for fellas!

- Wasn't there so cannot comment on the ref but glad it was a 'grown-up' relationship. On the subject of promotion, we have to face facts that the maths is against us. Having said that, the 'one game at a time' approach is clearly the way forward. If we win saturday they might carry some self doubt into forthcoming games and then who knows - we may catch them. We have to keep the squad tight though and view this as a two-year plan. After a couple of seasons I think we are finding out quickly what it takes to succeed. The great thing is that we have a sustainable club currently, with a good structure bringing boys through. With the necessary smattering of older heads we have what it takes. I couldnt make it to Bettws saturday - I had 70 coming to the house for my 40th birthday party (or was it 40 for my 70th??) and there was just too much to do in the afternoon. The best bit of the weekend was getting the result through though. There were some happy Abertillery supporters in Llangyfelach, Swansea, on Saturday I can assure you.

I can't tell you how pleased I was to find that we can dog out the matches we just have to win. I was reading my old match report of the Swansea game in '95 and there are some parallels - injuries forcing people out of position but the boys never giving up after an early set-back. I will be at the match saturday come hell and high water.

Any news on Dodgers' injury? Hope you're OK mate. I had heard a rumour that Rossy was going to step in at scrum half for Bettws. Any comments?

Just wanted to add my congratulations to all the others. The signs of a good team is being able to adapt to differing circumstances such as the state of a pitch and players slotting in to unfamiliar positions. The boys responded magnificently and applied the right tactics with skill, commitment and concentration. Trusting "Dodger" will recover soon as we need his panache in the centre. Had to wait a few days to be able to post due to problems with the chat room service provider.

Anyway an excellant performance by the lads after conceeding an early try. We kept our composure and scored one of the tries of the season. The scrum is more than comfortable on a regular basis now and the line-out, although it stuttered once or twice generally supplied an excellant form of good possession.

Thanks to Dodgers for filling in at scrum-half, unfortunately the injury came at a bad time for the team and for him a hyper extension whatever that is, we didn't have those in my day. I hope the injury is not too bad as since he's been back in the side the backs have been performing with panache. 'Young' Neil Hoskins however stepped into the breech and did a sound job as the link man.

What must be remembered on Saturday was that Bettws were a side above us in the table and a team that we hadn't beaten previously. Now we march on and welcome Blaenavon (or is it Tonga) to the park on Saturday, yet another test for the lads but I'm sure they will be up for the challenge.

The supporters are doing their bit for the team as well, regularly outnumbering the oppositions support and making themselves heard, this must be a massive fillip for the boys on the field.

Lets keep it all going and overall enjoy ourselves!

First of all, best of luck to the boys for the game - we are all behind you.

The next two games quite bluntly will make or break the season in terms of where we finish. If we can beat both Bettws and Blaenafon then we may have a good chance of finishing second and a possible play-off spot.

However, importantly, irrespective of where we eventually end up and even if we lose one or both of these games, I believe we are on track to make a real impact next season with a side that is playing attractive rugby if we continue to do what we are doing and the squad remains tight.

It's one game at a time to use the old cliche and so to the Bettws game. We have never beaten our opponents in the three league games to date, the best being a draw in the first game we played last season at home. To be honest we were thumped down there last season but we matched them this season at The Park and indeed with a little more composure would have won what was a very close game.

Lessons to be learned?

>> Bettws showed great team spirit at The Park which to be honest won them the game at The Park as they tackled everything that moved (even if they were more than pushing the offside line). At the end of the game some will recall they stayed on the pitch and sang a song about being "Pride of the eastern valley". We have to match that in every way tomorrow as they will be up for it again and I believe we can. If not we will lose.

>> Their pitch is awful with bumps and dips. It's the same for both sides but they will be more used to it.

>> They have a "weight-challenged" pasty faced youngster in the forwards who looks as if he will burst at times but they use him to great effect in charges close to the line. Their scrum if I recall is not the greatest but they used the rolling maul to great effect in the loose.

>> Behind they aren't the most adventurous of teams but they have a hard-nosed experienced inside centre who a lot of play revolved around when they sent the ball out.

I like to think we will concentrate on our game though it is useful to know where their threats could come from. I think the key will be who wants the win most. I hope it will be us - our supporters have their bit to play to help the team. Get there and make yourselves heard in support of the team!

Am trying to trace a bit of my family history that relates to Ben Thomas who I believe was an Abertillery player and someone who played for Wales. I am lead to believe his International cap is on display in the clubhouse. Would love to find out more about him and would be great if a picture existed. I vaguely remember visiting relations when the cap was stored at home and was honoured to have the cap placed upon my head! Unfortunately it never gave me any magical powers but would love to find out more even if it�s just the year his cap relates to.

A furious row over sub-standard balls has hit the Welsh Premier, as leaders Neath accuse Bridgend of gamesmanship.
The Welsh All Blacks say the Ravens conspired to give their goal kickers inferior balls while delivering regulation balls to their own side.

Bridgend have firmly rejected all allegations from the 31 December Brewery Field tie - won 25-16 by Neath - saying the sides used the same balls.

Neath want an in-house inquiry, formal response and apology from Bridgend.

With the announcement of Sonny Parker's retirement from International rugby we should ask questions of the foreign legions loyalty to the Welsh National cause. Parker knows the plight that Wales find themselves with the suspension of Gavin Henson and the injury to Tom Shanklin yet, although asked to reconsider the timing of his retirement by Mike Ruddock he repaid the investment in him by the Welsh public by turning his back on the Welsh cause!

Die hard Welshmen will find this difficult to accept and I would think that Parker may as well reconsider his time in Wales as it would probably be better if he returned to the land of his birth sooner rather than later!

What are the views of you other Wales supporters should we utilise these foreign rejects, personally I could never have put on any other National jersey other than the red of Wales, and given an arm and leg to do so.

Following my old butty Mike Cox's advice after last week game, I had a long chat with the ref after the match yesterday. "I complemented him on his handling of the game" and he stated that the match was a fantastic advert for Welsh rugby and that he'd never seen a match in division 5 of such a standard.

I must admit I initially ended up disappointed by the end result of the match but upon reflection realise that this was stupidity, the lads are playing fantastic rugby and could, as Graham Riley pointed out have won by a hugh margin if the ball had gone to hand.

Our problem now is keeping everyone happy as we are currently using a settled side, it is however more than a 15 man game thought and we have very capable players in our squad - four subs does us no favours.
The results yesterday went in our favour and I'm already looking forward to next Saturday's game at Bettws.

Its great feeling a buzz about the team again - when was the last time we won five on the trot??

Keep it going lads and you'll have all the supporters support.

I made the wrong decision on Saturday - went to support my son playing for the local rugby club in a North Mids Cup match.
Match was dire so serves me right for not going to see the Green and Whites but note to Hon Sec - could have got entire number of spectators at the match into a mini bus and taken 'em to The Park.
As I was wearing my Aber club tie - well it annoys the hell out of the English - it was noted by one of the spectators who knows someone who has a brother who played for Aber - what was that about it being an unwritten law of the universe that everyone knows someone who played for Aber!?
Did Aber play a hundred a side in the past?
Must have done for all these players to emerge from the wood work!
Anyway I was cheered up especially as my son's team lost when I rang the Hon Sec who told me Aber had won their fifth game on the trot.
Tell Red Max that my singing was even more melodic when I was having my usual Saturday night bath but that is not a pretty thought!
Did I tell you that I taught Tom all he knows - that's Sir Tom Jones to you.

We were all initially disappointed when we left the field yesterday, but upon quick reflection we had won and thats what we went to do I guess!!! I felt that the disappointment was warranted in some respects given that we had played so well in the first half scoring some good tries only to somewhat deflate ourselves in the second half.As the excellently written match report suggest, Ynysddu were gritty performers with a never-say-die attitude, albeit gifted by our own errors.........

It`s still a joy to play in the team at the mo`, we are playing some good stuff and I feel we have a good balance within the team.Age and experience are balanced with lots of youthful exuberance[which is telling on my effin lungs at times!!!!!!]Looks like results went our way to a certain degree yesterday, granted teams below have games in hand but its the age old adage that we have "the points in the bag".Bettws will be smarting from their reversal yesterday and we may well suffer from the backlash next week.I feel we`ll rise to the challenge though, PROVIDED we adhere to the game plan that has served us well for the last 5 victories and dont get complacent, as we did at times yesterday.

Following on from last weeks notes on the board, I thought the referee was superb yesterday.I`m a great believer that if a game can be played and you dont even recognise or rememeber him being on the pitch, then a job well done has been done.Apart from one rather obvious forward pass from the base of a scrum, I thought he let the game flow superbly well.In my posting last week I commented on the attitude of the officials prior to the game, I think he must have read it!!! he was an uncomplicated guy, sharing jokes with us in the changing rooms and was eager to answer any questions or queries that we had.I made a point of going into his changing room after the game to shake his hand and thanking him for it.I did emphasise thats its always easy to thank the officials when you`ve won the game, but nonetheless thought he was good, very good.

Before I sign off, I want to apologise for dropping the ball 5 metres out but beg forgiveness, in Nick Merediths words, "Sorry But, I was in 22 minds when I slung the pass out..........."-Buck passed sufficiently there I feel!!!

Big performances I felt yesterday by Greg "Doofy" Lane, felt Suede put himself about as did Jonny Brake.My midfield partner Lee Bowden was as solid as ever and is always looking for an elusive run.Andrew Mason is strong as an ox and showed it on times yesterday, if he cant run round em he`ll just brush em off with ease!!! Some excellent running and at times flowing rugby at the Park this afternoon. Without being too greedy this could and should have been a 40 points plus win if the ball had stuck more often. Over ambition which led to poor passing and some wrong options almost let a resolute Ynysddu back into a game that should have been well won. Nevertheless the more we play this style open rugby, the better and more consistent we will become. Well done team. Keep it up. Roll on Bettws!

As a supporter, I cannot remember when it was that I was last looking forward so much to a game at The Park. Prarbably when we had that tremendous end-of-season run when we were sadly and unluckily relegated from Division One. The tension was very very high then though but we had some great results.

This time we may not go up - in fact unlikely to - but the standard and style of play is a joy to watch. Well done to all concerned - good luck for Saturday and an a word of caution, remember to put the hard work against what we will be a very committed Ynsyddu outfit

Lomu taunter is handed life ban

The incident involving the former All Black was seen on TV
The Llanelli Scarlets have confirmed a life ban on the man who confronted Jonah Lomu from the touchline.
Scarlets' chief executive Stuart Gallacher said the man would not be welcome after his "irresponsible and unacceptably aggressive behaviour".

Simon Coddington was captured on TV verbally abusing the Cardiff Blues and ex-All Blacks star on January 2.

Mr Coddington threw the ball away from Lomu when it went out of play and then shouted abuse at him.

Mr Gallacher met him face-to-face on Wednesday to hand out the life ban which starts immediately.

I have received hundreds of messages of support from fans asking for us to take the harshest possible action against this man

Stuart Gallacher, Llanelli Scarlets' chief executive

"The club will simply not tolerate this sort of loutish behaviour," Mr Gallacher said after a hearing on Wednesday.

"As well as insulting a great player, his behaviour was offensive to both clubs and the game of rugby."

The rugby club had written to to Lomu, who chose to make light of the incident, after the game. But Mr Gallacher warned then that the fan - who at that point had not bee identified - would face a life-time ban.

It emerged earlier this week that Mr Coddington, who only moved to live near the Scarlets ground recently, was banned for six years from the Nottingham Forest football ground in 2003.

A spokesman for Nottingham Forest FC confirmed Mr Coddington has been banned from all football league grounds in the Nottinghamshire police force area until 12 May 2009.

The spokesman said the order had been made under a local scheme known as PACT (Police and Clubs Together Against Violence).

The chief executive said he though the punishment fitted the crime and the club would have "zero tolerance" of that kind of behaviour in future.

Having had time to reflect on Saturdays performance I still arrive at the same conclusion, The Referree was "crap"!

I can't decide whether he was inept or just bent, as I believe that he comes from Cardiff.

There is no doubt in my mind that he robbed us of at least twenty points and gifted the opposition with their scores.

Come on committee and submit a formal complaint to the WRU surely we deserve better than that performance.

- Ginger Monster as a committee we have to protect referrees and are not allowed by the WRU to express an opinion! else we will be deemed to have brought the game into disrepute. Until recent years we sent in a rating card for the referree this practise has now however been stopped as normally one team would rate the ref well whilst the other (losing) team would score him down. On most occasions this season referree advisors have been present however on Saturday this was unfortunately not the case otherwise i'm sure that views would have been expressed.   - My informants tell me that whilst last Saturday's ref lives in Cardiff, in fact hails from north Wales. I think he was nervous at the start and made some dubious early calls which added to that such that afterwards he didn't do the best of jobs. Let's cut him some slack and say he had an off day as we all do now and again. We need referees and he will no doubt refelect on some decisions such as the mark from the kick off which was just plain wrong or some inconsistent ones. He will improve if he does.   - I reckon the ref was inexperienced and just lost it a bit on Saturday at times - there were some seemingly very poor decisions most of which did seem to go against us which was somewhat surprising/unusual in the usual scheme of things since we dominated the game almost totally. Then again I did see some stats once that refs do favour - subconciously I'm sure - sides that are losing heavily. Trouble was on Saturday we were only in the first twenty minutes and 5-3 up when the penalty count against us was 10-1.     - Excellent to have an experienced player's view on this and explained in such an erudite fashion. On the whole, I think that our players (and Dodgers when called on in particular) have tried to develop a friendly rapport with the official which helps the team and also the referees who are doing difficult jobs in what is a complicated game law-wise. On a different note, the support has been great and we can make a difference as evidenced by Dodgers' message. So get your Auntie and her cat and dog down there on Saturday for the Ynysddu game. Another excellent performance by the team 1 through to 15.Without appearing to be churlish the score could have easily have been 60 points plus if it was not for some confounding decisions by the ref.If anyone has the results from the other matches in our division -please let us know.

To say the ref was somewhat benevolent to St. Alban's would be something of an understatement - though I kept my cool ;-) - Like you without wishing to be churlish the score would have been way past the half century mark with a different referee. Moreover their first try should have been a drop out 22 and their second, excellent move though it was, was a result of a scrummage that should have been our feed. Took the short drive from Oakdale to the Park to watch a training session. I was impressed by the spirit and good hearted banter between the Coaches and the squad. Having been in man management in one form or another for many years this level of morale and togetherness does not come by chance. All this hard work is paying off. Well done everyone. An excellent response with interesting selections, although I suppose there could never be total agreement in every position.

A somewhat surprised choice of your NO 10 'good doctor'. Not in my top 3 but a good player nevertheless.

Surprised to hear you have supported Aber for all these years dodger. I endorse your views on Nigel Paul, although Worzel would just shade it for me.

Incidently, although not the best number 10 to have played for Aber, Les Williams was an exciting player, very elusive, with good hands, albeit a little slow.

The biggest kicker I have ever seen in an Aber shirt (although he only played for us for a short time) was Keith James (passed his best before playing date when he came to us) nevertheless, he could kick from one 25 yard line (oops 22m!) to the other without the ball touching the ground.

Finally, I can never recollect an opposition prop (even international) getting the better of John Dixon.

How about your most exciting Aber match? There have been many excellent matches over the years but the match for me, was going to St. Helens, having to win against Swansea in order to stay in the top division will take some beating. How about you?

We lost to Llanelli in the home quarter final. Dodgers' message has reminded me of Ian Wilkinson - cracking player as was Gavin Pugh at that time. Although more of a back row, I put Ross Thomson in the second row because just having him on the pitch was an inspiration. I recall him taking over what seemed like the whole Cross Keys pack on his back over the line to score down there. Two years ago we were in deep dispair....... Most of us will admit that we could see no light at the end of the tunnel, could this be the end of the once famous 'green and whites'?

Many former players expressed great concern and asked what was happening but this did nothing to solve our problem of VERY FEW PLAYERS. The committee explored every avenue they could think of but to no avail.

We found ourselves in the 'last drink saloon', clutching at straws and sinking fast!!

Along came the Lone Ranger (Paul Rossiter) with his side-kick Tonto (Mike James) to steady the committee's nerves and convince us that not all was lost yet.

Well a year and a bit on, we're still alive and kicking although not out of the woods yet the club now has a firm foundation not built on quicksand.

Thanks to the committee's, coaches and parents the youth, mini and junior sections are more than just the bricks and morter of the club as they are without doubt our future. Gone are the days of throwing money at players who do not have the future of the 'green and whites' at heart, we have now entered a new period in the life of the club - our own looking after our own.

We may be in division 5 but our vision is no longer blurred, our aims and aspirations are to progress through the leagues and given time once again achieve the level we formally held.

Thanks must be offered to ALL those who helped to keep ABER alive in those black days and lets look forward to a bright future.

When I was very young, in school in fact, a Ian James played for Aber at fly-half. This was in the late 50's and early 60's. Ian had a Welsh trial and was unlucky not to be capped.Does anyone know his whereabouts and what become of him.?
