In the Dark showed here last night, and the pre-souled Spike of early S4 equivalent is really not what we see post chip at all. There are various arguments that could be made about motivation and so on but they would be speculative. What we can say is that Spike was willing to torture Angel and to feed on humans at this point.

I agree and in the corresponding Buffy episode "The Harsh Light of Day", he tried to kill Buffy. Spike's road to wherever (I don't like the term redemption as I really don't believe in the concept) had many detours. Even chipped Spike was going to sell Suvolte demon eggs in "As You Were" in season six. My argument regarding pre-chipped Spike was not that he was good or had a reliable moral compass but that he possessed a number of admirable qualities that are generally considered human. The fact that Spike was all over the place in terms of good/bad was one of the characteristics that made him so interesting (that and the snarky sense of humor). Otherwise, we would have just had another Angel but with better hair.
