It's always good to know John keeps tabs on what he thinks is going on here. I wish I had free time like he does to keep tabs on him.........oh but wait I would have to care what he does...oh silly me I forgot I don't give two hoots or a holler what he does!!!!

Since he is so concerned about Kobus and his hips I want to be sure to put his little mind at ease. He is a 2-2 hip. He was re-xrayed before he was bred to make sure that the x-ray we did at 15 months hadn't changed.

Kobus was sold in June 2001 to a secret service agent named Michael Lotus because we thought we had to have dogs with hip scores of 1-1 or better to breed with. We wanted to make sure he had a good home and if we needed him in the future we could use him.

Michael moved because of work and brought him back to us last summer. We consulted several orthapedic vets, sent his x-rays to several experts( Dr. Carl Smith PennHip, Dr. Dan Steinheimer, Dr. Vicki Monnig, and Dr. Ben Ellis) and asked all of them if it was possible to breed with a male dog like him and have any problems. The answer was you could breed with dogs with perfect hips and still have problems but his hips would not increase the risk of DJD if bred to a female with really good hips. This was noted especially by Dr. Carl Smith from Penn Hip (the man who invented PennHip) who told us point blank to use him and see what he throws. We waited over a year trying to decide what to do about it. We consulted his breeder in RSA and some of the board members of the SABT to get their views on breeding this dog. Everyone concurred to do a TEST breeding with him and see what he produced. So when Nadere' was tested and her hips came back really good we decided to breed them together. Now everyone who bought a pup from that litter knew exactly what the deal was with his hips and knew why we did the breeding. Several of them saw his actual xray. They were all told that we took a chance on him because he is an excellent dog. The pups that were sold from the litter were sold at reduced prices and all parties agreed to do preliminary hip tests on the pups from 6 to 8 months of age so we can have a record of the hips before one year and after one year of age. 5 of the pups have already tested clean and have good hips at a young age of 6 months. The rest are being tested soon. This was a one time test breeding to see if any problems occur in his pups. Robin wanted a brindle male pup. I offered her this pup at a reduced price. Took him for his pre-flight exam and health certificate the vet noted that he only could feel one testicle. I called Robin from the vet's office and offered her a different pup, or her money back or she could take him and see if it dropped. She chose to take Nemo and see if it dropped. We waited 3 weeks and it didn't drop so I sent her another pup at my expense. I couldn't take Nemo back because I had no room for him, so Robin started looking for a home for him. She and I talked several times about who to send him to and a couple of people I didn't feel comfortable with and a couple she didn't feel comfortable with so she sent him to CatB. A test breeding is just that at test and nothing more. No one hid anything from anyone and he is not severely dysplastic and he has not had xrays sent to any other organizations to try to get him passed. He is what he is. A 90.6% dog with a solid 2-2 hip that has not changed in over a year. He is worth taking a one time chance on in anyone's eyes that has seen him in person in the last 6 months. I got expert opinions from real experts on this dog and his hips and the chance of breeding him. If I had it to do all over again I would do the same thing. Every litter bred for the first time is a test breeding and anyone who says other wise is just plain fooling themselves. I called CatB and I am having Nemo picked up on Friday and taken to an orthapedic vet for actual x-rays and diagnosis to see exactly what is going on with him. I will be sure to post so that John has more to talk about. Seems he likes to point fingers and throw stones about breeding this dog. I guess he forgot to mention the test breeding he did with 4 Dogue females and an American Bulldog male, to make sure they were fertile because his male didn't get them pregnant. John I thought that's what sperm tests were for? Or didn't they have microscopes in those days?
