Hi All.
An article in todays paper, attributed to the 'Independant'
Barricades have been put up in Hamburgs St Pauli, the Reeperbahn is being closed down, with the news that Hamburgs oldest hotel of ill repute is closing after 60years of uninterupted service, It is in the same street as the legendary Star Club of Beatles fame. There is now a development in St Pauli for 300 flats for high income earners. A former policeman said the reason for the Reeperbahn's demise lies 2 klm away on the opposite bank of the Elbe. The container port has more lights than the town. Siggi remembers back in the 50s and 60s when the steets of the Reepebahn thronged with seamen, because back then it took a cargo ship five or six days to unload, which allowed the crews a run ashore. He said todays container ships turn around that fast the crew don't have time ashore.
All is not lost. Hamburg has ressurected one of the old slow-to-unload cargo ships. The Cap San Diego is a beautiul freighter kept in immaculate condition as a museum ship and is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
This is only a synopsis of the article which is much to large to put in as a post.
Cheers Des
