Greetings Peter,
The news about your famous flag seems to have dried up so could we please have the latest on it.
Sometime ago I did ask you when it is finished if it will be possible to have a photo of it, look forward to a reply.
Best wishes,

How many people are aware that the crown in our cap badge represents Drake's ships ( the little ones), sailing in amongst the Spanish Galleons below the level of their guns and just pounding away just above the galleon's water line?
Message is that in a scrap get in close!

As All will have seen by now this General Forum is going to be removed soon.
As it is of course Brians right to do what he wants to,i for one am going to be very sad indeed to loose this Forum,as i feel that but for a few bad postings here and there, this has been one of the more popular Forums in the past.
Its nice to sometimes have a natter about something else and be able to express concern etc to folk who are going through troubles, need assistance etc.
But Alas! this is to be no more, and although i fully support Brian on this site and what he does and has done for us ALL it is with a heavy Heart that i say Adios to this what was a great General Forum (Please dont read this wrong i am not leaving the site!)
So what are your thoughts on this? Will i am sure make interesting reading, and PLEASE! no nasty remarks, keep it clean!!
No malice meant to you at all Brian!! Just my thoughts.
Cheers
Vernon

Between the Devil and the Deep Blus sea I was taught refered to painting the 'devils' on sailing ships. They being rails below the gun deck on the ships hull, so when painting the deep blue sea was below you. Today in the paper someone claims the distance between the Devil and the deep Blue sea is 6.4 klm. nad refers to The straits of Messina. The Devil a rock named Scyilla on the italian side, and the deep blue sea a whirlpool off Punta del Faro. Some one has to be wrong. How say you????

Bad news I’m afraid late last week the scroats stole our beloved Land Rover Defender off our drive with not a sound, reckon it was stolen to order. They chucked out every trace of me – even the hand book and service records so I guess it will have a new Reg and Vin number by now! – the rotten low life b*****ds.
Once I have sorted the insurance out and convinced them I didn’t steal it I will get another identical I hope, so look out for me on the London To Brighton Land Rover run on the 5th of October 2008 I will be flying two large Red Dusters and there’s a wee dram if you call in on us on the Promenade.

Best regards all

Is there a website that lists major repairs to the main Engines of broken down ships.
EG, a friend of my was on a vessel where they cut through the main connecting rods to the upper piston of a Doxford with a HACKSAW took them 8days.
I myself was on the MV Trevelyen(hains) when we had to strip down and remetal the main Thrust block just to get to Jamaica.
This is the sort of thing I am looking for.
Can anyone Help please reply to my E Mail directly Thanks Reg Sheard

It seems that I need to remind a few people that there is a convention with Message Boards that you do not reply with off topic postings.
There is a heck of a lot of that on my Message Boards which must stop.
If you want to start your own personal little war do so with an original posting - stop using other peoples.
i have managed to stop the bad language, off topic postings are next.
I will be checking every posting from now on and will remove, without notice, any that breach this basic rule.
As with bad language, if this is not to your liking the choice is yours.
Brian.

I see in my latest copy of the "Justice" a magazine for ex patriated British pensioners, that one can now get a full pension after only thirty years of contributions, and after only one year of contributions one can get one thirtieth of a pension, and so forth, two years, two thirteiths etc. These new rules come into force as of April 5 2010. This sure would have made a difference way back when us old foggies were told we had to have a minimum of ten years contributions to get any kind of a pension. For the info of guys who did the Vietnam Tanker runs, there is a U.S. Naval site which shows photo's of the berth we used at Nha Be, some seven miles south of what was Saigon. If you Google Nha Be it comes up with a few results but the one to look at is titled The Nha Be Naval support activity base of the Brown water Navy.
As you scroll down through the photo's you will come to some of the Tanker berth, and there are three shots of the Shell Tanker ACTEON. There is a photo of a couple of her crew as well which is mixed up with the U.S staff photo's, so you will need to read the captions.

Here's one for the grey cells.Whilst serving my time in Manchester I worked on a few ships belonging to Watts,Watts,a very innovative company for a tramp outfit, due mainly,if memory serves to Eddie Watts. Two vessels,in particular, spring to mind,Wendover and Weybridge(both built 1958)They had very unusual configurations and layouts. In the mists of my addled brain I recall being told(It's a long time ago ang I was green!)that the hull shape was due to the fact that they had been designed for the use of a revolutionary new marine power plant.I know the ended up with very mundane Doxfords but anybody got any ideas on this concept?Beam me up Scotty!Alan

Hi All.
On the TV news it showed a huge heavy lift ship said to be the biggest in the world; bringing a section of drilling rig to NZ. Only just got through the entrance of the port. What made my day was all the kids down along the waterside, faces filled with awe. cars gridlocked as people got out to watch it come in and anchor. If only the ships were still sailing and the kids would have something to look forward to.

Hi Guys just wondered if you could help.In the 1980s I was employed out in India installing generating equiptment.and once had 2 steam plants sent out from the UK each weighing 230 tons each gross. The heavy lift ship bringing them out dropped them on the Quayside unfortunately after the ship left it was discovered that no crane was available in Bombay.(we solved this problem later)However my immediate quest is remembering the heavy lift ships name I have it in my memory as the Autralia or Australian Starman. But a buddy of mine disputes this name and sure enough I cant find her in ships registery was I dreaming??
