QE2 was in Melbourne today leaves tonite, Last time we will ever see this great ship I shall be ringing the Sun Herald newspaper Melbourne in the hope they have taken a good photo shot of her, because ill order a big pic of her and have it framed. It will probably be the last time we will ever see a Passenger liner that actually looks like a Ship instead of the Block of Flats on water Shipyards are turning out now. All the Best Glenn in Oz

Just letting you all know that Blackpool has been chosen as the host for National Veterans Day 2008, and will be holding events from 21 - 29 June to celebrate. The main theme is reunion and they will be trying to get as many comrades together as possible over the week. For further info on the events, including Aero GP, Fireworks and formal Veterans Badge presentations, see their website: www.veteransweek.co.uk - don't forget, some Merchant Seamen are entitled to their Veterans Badge too. Check out www.veterans-uk.info for details.

I am researching a sinking for a friend who wishes to trace information relating to his cousin (Kenneth Crowther)a galley boy on the SS Port Pelly, torpedoed and sunk on the 20th July 1943, she was sunk in Augusta Sicily. There were about 20 survivors (sadly Kenneth was not one of them). If any of the survivors or any of their relations are still around and have information with regard to K.Crowther, or any pics with reference to Kenneth or the vessel it`s self it would be much appreciated if you could onpass the said info to my e-mail address.
Best Regards J. Davis.

I have a copy of the Boys Own Paper of May 1951 (price one shilling) which contains a treasure-trove of ads and articles such as Brylcream (with a photo of Denis Compton-not a hair out of place), the Webley Air pistol,The Army Apprenticeship Schools, Radio Officer Training Colleges at Clapham, the Wireless College at Colwyn Bay, the London Telegraph College, Earls Court (where I trained), the Merchant Navy School of Navigation at Southampton, the BSA Golden Wings dropped handlebar bicycle (WOW), How to build a two-seater canoe with sails, a detailed article on the Festival of Britain (non-PC!), How to hold down your first job, a story entitled ‘Biggles works it out‘, a Mars bar ad including Sammy Shuteye, BSA Cadet major air rifle, a RAF ad. for apprenticeship to service such airplanes as the Gloster Meteor, stamps for approval, and so many more from those wonderful long-ago days. Makes me feel quite ‘misty’ sometimes when I think about them.

Have you all noticed how prices are escalating? Went to my local dispensary today to find the cost of a bottle of gin is now over $30 and to add insult to injury the price of tonic water has also gone up. How are we meant to survive when the essentials of life are costing so much. Why cannot our governemnt add these items to the concession list?

Two questions:
1)Does anyone have any information on POW movements from Singapore to Japan and Formosa (Taiwan). I am especially interested in finding out if there are any records of British POW's being moved from Japan to Taiwan. So far I have not found any.
2)I have spent several hours recently researching my fathers time as a POW and have been surprised at how little I could find on British MN POW's in the Far East especially Taiwan. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi to ALL,
Just wondering if anyone can put a finger on this!
When exactly was the prefix of R replaced with UK in Merchant Navy Discharge Books, and also would anyone know (this would be hard) who the person was that had the last R Number issued.
This will keep you busy for a while or will it??
I dont know so its not a quiz!
