I think some people has missed the point of this web site. If we look at the heading of Brian's page it clearly say's "looking for old freinds"
From that point I'm sure he is horrified at the way it has grown to the point that grown men, in our sixties and seventies snipe at each other becuase of the colour of skin or the city of our birth.
And that is specially to the keyboard commandos who post incognito ( Cowards).
As a crew member who had the pleasure of working with Brian he does not deserve this shit
To the rest of you a Happy New Year

Hello everyone and a very Happy New Year to you.
Can any of you knowledgable folk out there tell me what the I.M.O stands for on ships? I saw one today on the Panama Canal webcam and am curious.

Hi All.
I was reading in the Financial section of the paper an article about Bulk Carriers , a paragragh on the bottom reported. Between the year 1991 and 2000, 134 Bulk Carriers
sank, and 740 seamen drowned. Despite all the improvements in life saving facilities; it's still a tough life out there.
Cheers Des

I have a friend whose father served in the MN during WWW2.He was a ships Captain & received the above medal. He was torpedoed on three occasions & on the latter was taken as POW.
Having served in the MN after the war I have no knowledge of the above medal & the criteria for its award. My friend was asking if there would have been a citation connected with the medal- can any one assist me please?
Many thanks

Well its Boxing Day yet again, and i will be glued to the TV instead of the Puter in a few hours time.
The one race that captures a worldwide audience i feel (the other being the Cape To Rio)
Its a spectacular site on the off here in the Harbour and there will as usual be many people trying to get the best vantage point to see this wonderfull race.
I wish i could also be somewhere nearer, but Alas! i am not able to.
I think it would be a great experience to sail in one of these marvellous craft to Hobart, what a buzz that would be!
Enjoy all those who may be watching wherever you may be.
Does anyone know how many places this is actually televised to?? I am not sure!
Cheers
Vernon
Hope you all got nice pressies and had a wonderfull time on Xmas Day!

Now that New Years Eve is fast approaching have been thinking about previous celebrations which, working on Cruise Liners was usually spent at sea celebrating on deck. One Year I will always remember, we had two nights in Singapore so a friend and I decided we would organise ourselves a good night out. We had Dinner at Raffles Hotelin Garden Restaurant(quite cheap considering)and then by Taxi to Boogie Street. For those that dont know Boogie Street is the home of the Lady/Boys who come out and mingle at midnight. The Street was packed with ships Crew and visitors. We had to toast in the New Year with Chinese Tea, impossible to get a drink. At about 3am we got a bicycle rick shaw and returned to ship. Happy memories. Would love to hear other stories, wont gossip.
Health Wealth and Happiness to you all for 2008
Tilly

I would like to wish a Mery Christmas and a Happy New Year to firstly my fellow OFFICERS and those of lower ranks next and lastly cooks an ill bred band of renegades who should have been kept in Gaol. Some of these desperados will be sitting in lounges in their homes provided by the state and drinking cheap plonk. They should be deported back to finish their sentences in good old UK and then transported to somewhere like Brisbane a colony of cut throats and molesters. David British Ireland. Seasons Blessings and No Surrender from the right side of the Border Mr Murphy.

to all helpers.
I have been on the internet trying to gain more information on the small tanker c 653,but i have come up against a brick wall.
Two other vessels of a similar size are also untraceable, they are the c 647 and the c 648.both tankers.
Again i cannot get far, unless someone knows a direct route.
other vessels of similar design and tonnage are
c 615,c 616,c 617,c 619,c 620,c 621.these were all general cargo carriers.

A friend sent me this. I wish I could acknowledge the author but it came anonomously, signed Joe Earl with no contact details. For those of you that have never served understand why those of us that do or did do it. It's love of country, family and friends that make us do what we do.

They Bore the Brunt
By Joe Earl

They sailed the seas to bear the brunt,
They steamed the courses laid,
Ten thousand miles their battle front,
Unbacked and undismayed.
Fine seamen these of our great race,
From your seaport or town,
They risked their lives with danger faced
Until their ship went down.
Remember them - they held the line,
Won freedom on the way,
Remember them - their life was thine -
On merchant navy day.

J.Earl

With poet licence change, just this once- “On merchant navy day”. To “On this and Chritmas day” May the author bless my honest intentions and the tears of true grief.
