Watched a documentary the other night on the £10 poms. I jumped in Adelaide in 1970 and hitched to Sydney and worked on the railways. Gave myself up coz of my old mum and dad back home but often wonder what would have happened if i'd stayed. See they are looking for emigrants again but too old now. Anyone interested in the £10 poms here is the link. All the best Gus.

Many today will be natrulaised in ceromonies around the country and there will be celebrations in all cities and towns around the country. Time for b.b.q beer and fireworks as well tonoght. It got me to thinking how do you spend your national day in which ever country you are in or from. Van Riebeck day, St. Georges. St. Davids. St. Patrick. St. Andrew. Dear All

Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition that was launched requesting a new public holiday falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year. To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday, it's got three aims:

1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain

2. To remind people of the importance of protecting our Nation and what it stands for;

3. To break that 3 month period between the August Public Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no long weekends, especially as the UK has fewer public holidays than most European Countries.

If you agree to the idea, please sign up to the petition - it doesn't take long - and it would be great if you were to forward the link to other people as well. If you are not interested, just hit the delete key. This is not just about another bank holiday, but more importantly about having a designated day to remember all those people that sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

THIS IS A NOTABLE PETITION THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAVE ASKED FOR PLEASE
SIGN IF YOU WANT AN EXTRA BANK HOLIDAY.

regards
Roger

Hi to ALL,
Just watched the movie called "Ghostbaot" starring David Jason, and thought it was a really good one.
Although a bit far fetched it was neverless quite riviting at times, and held me to the small screen!

How would you have liked to be on a Sub at anytime??
I have only been on one Sub for a visit and that was enough!!

Maybe some of you have been on one at one stage.

Your thoughts on the Movie if you have seen it,and on working on a Sub.
Funny they havent shown it here before (well not that i can recall) Australia that is!
Cheers
Vernon

Hi to All.
Just thinking on my first Ship the Dunnottar Castle.
I was fortunate enough to do the last trip on her under the Union Castle Colours 1958 ,after which she was sold to Incres S.S. Co., Monrovia.and had many years service as Victoria,The Victoria,Princess Victoria with other Companies as well.
The reason for this post is to ask if anyone knows of other Vessels that stayed in Service as long as she did, with any owners!
The Dunnottar was launched on 25.01.1936
And eventually Departed Eleusis for demolition in Alang,on the 04.05.2004 (she was laid up for 2 years from 2002/2004) so that means she had 66 years actual Service as Passenger Carrier.
Cheers and thanks
Vernon

For anyone who ever went to the NSTS/C at Gravesend, the following website is a must for you to check out http://www.gravesham.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=3823

I have copied below an extract from the site, and the more people who send in their memories, the better, so that those days are not forgotten. There are already 12 people's memories on there, but room for so many more. Have a read, as I it will bring back memories, and then add your own.

Regards

Ian

Also know as The National Sea Training School / Centre, this prestigious training establishment was located in a large building in Denton, Gravesend.

The centre now operates through North West Kent College and is housed in the college's main building in Derring Way, Gravesend.

Just watched the clip of the Riverdance Ferry rescue on BBC News, they are all safe now but my thoughts are with all the other ships at sea and well remember rolling around like a good un pitching and tossing and shuddering – remember when she rolled over to Starboard and you were just holding on and just as you though the roll would stop she just shuddered a moment and rolled on some more, and there was an almighty crash and every pot smashed in the pantry.

Best regards all,
Steve R770014 South Derbyshire waiting for the snow!

When I was working on the Passenger Liners, I always knew that the crew steward was called the " Pig Steward", I have just read a book that calls him a "Peak Steward". If I am wrong I have been all these years thinking that he was called the "Pig Steward". I always remember that he had his own desk at pay off day, Take care....Terry W.

Hi folks, I don't post very often, but I look in daily to read the posts. I was in the Merchant navy 1965 - 1974. While surfing today I was quite shocked to see the vivid photos of the final days of the Oriana and the Windsor Castle, In fact it was like a kick in the guts. I knew of course that these ships were gone, but it's really sad to see those majestic vessels die! Did all this really happen? I mean us, the merchant navy! I guess we are really lucky that we were able to experience those years.

Hi
Just watched the 6pm news here in Sydney, and see that yet another Ship has been hit by a huge wave causing all kinds of bother!
The Captain apparently badly injured.
Others seem to be OK Hope all will be well.
This time it was however a very freak wave from what i gather!
Now beached off Blackpool, reminds me of the one that was beached in Newcastle NSW not too long ago.
See she lost quite a number of her containers too.
Cheers
Vernon

I am really getting fed up to the teeth with the stupid, petty sniping that is going on with some of these posts.
I am receiving complaint after complaint and I really don't need this hassle.
I do not see it is my job to constantly check these postings.
Very soon I will have to do something about this, I have two choices, one to remove individual postings or two, remove the message board completely.
I have put thousands of hours into building this website and would be extremely reluctant to take such a drastic measure but I will if necessary.
Now, for the last time - Grow up you few individuals and stop the personal attacks that are spoiling things for everyone!
