I know about the circumstances of the sinking, but can anyone tell me was the SS Goole looking for mines, if not what was it doing at the time it was sunk

I am researching my late father-in-laws merchant navy service and have information from 1918 to 1920 but from there on the trail goes cold - I am assuming he worked for ships based in Salford Manchester eg Manchester liners as his last known ships were Manchester Hero and Manchester Exchange he was a stoker (fireman) name was Fred Chester, if anyone has any info on other ships that they were on and came across a Fred Chester during 1920 to 1950 it would be appreciated, cannot find any records in the archives on line

While in London last week, I saw out the corner of my eye, large stone letters M.N. I am ashamed to say i did not know of the Monument in Trinity Square to the lost ships and men of W.W.2 I recognized many ships names, as the next ones built with those names were part of my life at sea. I could have spent a few hours looking at all the names, I know if I had been around in those days, perhaps I may have been one of them. I am glad the M.N. was commemorated in such a monument. Today I saw the famous flag that P.J. Muprphy sewed,
Young Roger from Tasmania to me so proudly showed,
It is a wonderous site to see a pleasure to the eye,
This flag will surely fly,
Well done, well done P.J. Murphy,
Well done, well done P.J. Murphy,
Well done, well done P.J. Murphy,
May this flag for ever fly.

With apologies to John Brown, and his body.

Met with Roger and Doolaly Jim today to see the flag. It is not complete yet but is looking very good. Have sent photos to Brian to put on the site for all to see.

To avoid being embroiled in any disputes of any description and to ensure I stood on nobody's toes for the future I had intended to just use the New forum but even though I entered my correct user name and password kept being denied entry so gave up and came back here any idea why this happened ?
With regards

Researching family history has given the name of a ship around 1910 to 1918 The Mantua, looking at the web I find 2 ships Mantua, I also have 2 photos one looks like a passenger liner the other looks like a cargo ship, my relative aged around 17 in 1914 was a stoker(fireman)and was born in Salford would have been around Manchester docks.
Can anyone help with info on the Mantua was there more than one ship with teh same name
Also looking for info on the Lucigen, Osnabruck and Woton in 1919 to 1920

The Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. advertised in the Daily Mail yesterday for sea-going staff. The salaries (tax free)ranged from an Electrician starting at $77,000 US Dollars, to Masters on 123,000 US Dollars and rising to $137,000. When I signed on rms Scythia as 3rd R/O in 1953 for my first trip I was on £23 a month, which wasn't bad in those long-ago days!
