Hi Folks,
On reading back my comments, I suppose they could be construed as being a bit pontific. But that was not my intent.. What I was trying to say was, why attack fellow Brits for your feelings of zero identity. Speaking for the Scots, perhaps some of the negative ago, long before London became extremely cosmopolitan. In the past, it was my experience having sailed with many from that area, if you lived outside the capital; you were either a hick or an eejit. And that London was the epicenter of all things English. And this could be applied to their attitude not only to Scots but perhaps English people in the North and perhaps the South West of the country. Maybe this mind set originated due to the terrible battering they took from the Germans Blitz of in World War 2, who knows.
The world is a village now and in the Western world especially. There IS a strong resentment growing towards the dilution of their traditions and cultures, plus a perceived threat to their financial security by immigrants who, mostly at present anyway, are from the Eastern Block countries formerly a part of the USSR. These people (rightfully or wrongfully) are seen to be the source of cheap labour, exploited by governments that threaten the standard of livable income, plus Social Services received by the indigenous population …A great resentment is also felt towards immigrants that they seam to be provided with more rights and protection from our governments, the EU and the political correct brigade than the naturally born and bred citizen, this seams very evident when it comes to Education, law and religious conviction…How about our rights to be British and Christian… To Asian countries show as much tolerance.... I don’t think so we are an island after all, with finite space and resources, and it does get up peoples noses when they perceive the French directing much of the immigrants to the UK and the appearance that the EU is not taking their fair share of them. Obviously Australia and New Zealand must be getting the back lash of this also, but I conject that the problem there is (Not so Far) not as great due to their comparative small populations.
I’m no xenophobic. But on occasion, Charity DOES begin at home.
