I am setting up a website about the MV 'HENDONHALL' of the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.

I was a Deck Appentice on her for 3 years 7 months from 1954 onwards.

Does anyone have any stories of photos they could give me to put on the site?

Have a look: http://mvhendonhall.webs.com/

Some photos and stories already on there.

Regards, Bob

This should show how the "Cruise Market " in Europe has possibly reached saturation point, we have just been told that our cruise iteniary has changed as on the due date of our arrival the port of Dubrovnik will be TOTALLY FULL of cruise ships, therefore P&O have altered our arrival date.
This might seem excellent for the British Merchant Navy, but I would hazzard a guess there is less than 50 crew members out of a possible 2000 whom are British. Where has ORIENT LINE,UNION CASTLE,SHAW SAVILLE,
CANADIAN PACIFIC,CUNARD plus many others all gone?

I have just been reading the Latest reports of the Seal Slaughter in Canada, mainly done with a Club, Doesnt that tell you something, all it tells me is how Barbaric and uncivilised can people be. Sea Shepherds other Ship the Farley Mowatt is up in the Area now, and has already been ordered out of the Area by the Canadian coastguard. all the best Glenn Baker

Hi All.
An article in todays paper, attributed to the 'Independant'
Barricades have been put up in Hamburgs St Pauli, the Reeperbahn is being closed down, with the news that Hamburgs oldest hotel of ill repute is closing after 60years of uninterupted service, It is in the same street as the legendary Star Club of Beatles fame. There is now a development in St Pauli for 300 flats for high income earners. A former policeman said the reason for the Reeperbahn's demise lies 2 klm away on the opposite bank of the Elbe. The container port has more lights than the town. Siggi remembers back in the 50s and 60s when the steets of the Reepebahn thronged with seamen, because back then it took a cargo ship five or six days to unload, which allowed the crews a run ashore. He said todays container ships turn around that fast the crew don't have time ashore.
All is not lost. Hamburg has ressurected one of the old slow-to-unload cargo ships. The Cap San Diego is a beautiul freighter kept in immaculate condition as a museum ship and is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
This is only a synopsis of the article which is much to large to put in as a post.
Cheers Des

Hi Folks

As some of you are aware, this year is the 60th Anniversary of Windrush (the 1948 mass migration of Caribbeans to this country). I am planning an event and I could do with making use of a hi-res version of the SS Empire Windrush image such as the one on this site at the top of this page: http://www.merchant-navy.net/Pictures/empire%20windrush.html

Is anyone able to email me a hi-res version suitable for printing? If so, I would be very grateful.

David

With grateful thanks,

To those of you who still celebrate the coming Christian feast of EASTER and not the commercial element of Chocolate Eggs and all year round availability of Hot cross Buns, I wish you ALL……
A very HAPPY and PEACEFUL EASTER.

It’s sad to think that if a consensus of people were asked what the occasion was all about, like Christmas, I bet few would be able to tell you.

Does the UK Govt. keep any archives of the MN. Were ships articles, passenger lists ever filed away. Is there a listing of MN personnel by discharge book number. Also certificates of competency. I had heard that there was a MN records office in Cardiff. But when the Welsh legislature needed a meeting place, they took over this site and all those files were hastily trucked off who knows where???
