Hi tony.
I'm on my third in ten years, and I still have the second one in the garage, doesn't scan. Like you say the ink is the dearest item. I found that when living in Penrith NSW I could buy my ink cartridges at the markets for $8 per cartridge over here in NZ they are $17 per cartridge. I got my printer for $99 with all the cartridges in, so as you say it might be cheaper to toss it out when it plays up.
