Hi Henry,
Your comments I'm sure will be appreciated by all. Don't know if this is a help, but listed below is some information that has helped in my research, print it off
All you may need is the seamans name, ship and a close date
Worth a try
Regards Frank

Thank you for contacting The National Archives of the United Kingdom regarding the crew list and ports of call for the SS Iceland covering 1953 - 1954.

As requested over the phone I am sending this by email and by post.

Only 10% of crew lists and agreements for British registered ships are held at The National Archives and unfortunately those for SS Iceland (official number 167034) are not among them. 10% are held at local county record offices while a further 10% are held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, but they only have those for years ending in a 5 (e.g. 1955). The rest, approximately 70% of the Agreements and Crew Lists were transferred to the Maritime History Archive at the Memorial University, Newfoundland. While they have a searchable database on their website for crew lists up to 1938, later crew lists are not searchable by name of ship but may well still be held by them anyway. Please contact

To order crew lists please go to their page <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.mun.ca/mha/about/orderagreements.php">http://www.mun.ca/mha/about/orderagreements.php</a> Please note that according to the Lloyd's Register the official number for SS Iceland should be 167034 rather than 1167034. This does tally with the correct range of numbers for the year the ship was registered.

I would also recommend that you contact

They have the archives of the Currie Line under the reference UGD 255/05

Within this series they have ships' records relating to individual Currie Line vessels, accounts of wages and personnel and details of the sale of vessels.

Hopefully they will be able to help you further.

If you wish to take your research further at The National Archives there are three ways for you to proceed:

1. You, or someone acting on your behalf, are welcome to visit us to do the research yourself. Our staff will give you advice free of charge. For visiting details, please go to <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/visit>. The only payment would be if you then wanted to buy copies from our Record Copying Department. You can take photographs of documents using your own digital camera, under certain rules. For details of both options go to <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/recordcopying/>.

2. You can use our paid search service, if you have a specific request: we cannot undertake wide-ranging research. We will reply to your request within 20 working days of receiving it, excluding any days between asking for and receiving your payment. For details go to <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/foi/research.htm>.

3. You can hire an independent researcher to carry out specific or wider-ranging research for you, both at The National Archives and in other relevant archives. For details, and for a list of independent researchers who conduct research at The National Archives, look at <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/irlist/>.

I attach two further links, one to our research guide called 'Merchant Seamen: Sea Service Records 1913-1972' <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=128">http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=128</a>

and the other to our paid search leaflet called 'Merchant Navy Service, Officers and Seamen, 1913-1972' <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/ifa_d6_merchant_navy_service_officer_seamen_1913_1972.pdf">http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/ifa_d6_merchant_navy_service_officer_seamen_1913_1972.pdf</a>

We wish you every success in your research, but please be aware that the records in our custody are not always complete: they were not created or kept for research purposes, but for use by the government or law courts of the day. We cannot guarantee that you will find what you are looking for.

Yours sincerely
