John....found your post very interesting, I worked back home in the U.K. from 1948 til 1981, in the Merchant Navy and various shoreside positions connected with shipping. Arrived in Bahamas in December 81 to work at Freeport Harbour. From 84 to 98 worked on cruise ships operated by a Miami based cruise line. So I worked 33 years out of the U.K., someone told me that to be entitled to U.K. social security pension you have to have worked for 11 years.....can anyone confirm this ? At age 65 I was told that I would be getting 89% of the pension.
Now back to the "heating allowance", I contacted Newcastle and asked why I couldn't get the 200 pound allowance, although living in Florida since 84 due to working out here, just last week the temp at night got down to -2C.....bloody cold ! I was told that one had to reside in the U.K. to get that allowance. I have some friends living in Spain who get it......their way around the system is, they maintain a U.K. address ! Maybe someone can enlighten me more on this.
If I can survive, I shall hopefully be back in the U.K. for good this year.....
Cheers.....Glan
