Subject: old FRP hulls...

Hi again all,

OK so the Dolphin got sold while I was playing phonetag with the owner :( so I am left with a couple of older boats (mid 60s Triton and Ericson) and a couple of newer ones (late 70s/early 80s Schock/Santana and Westerly)

I understand from reading (a lot) over the past few weeks that FRP is possibly limited in its lifespan, and that it can be "wet" and thus 1) difficult to insure (marina requirement...) and 2) way below the required strength (more of an issue to me...)

How much of a problem is this likely to be? A hall-out and survey will almost certainly blow roughly 5-10% of my budget straight off and so I only want to do it once (assuming that it is necessary on boats generally and of this age in particular, plus I will need it to get the insurance so that I can actually moor here as any boat I get will be over 20 years old)

A second question: Is it worth me looking at reasonable quality wooden hulls? I realize they will require more work, but I kind of like the idea of a boat that can be rebuilt rather than one that can't.

As ever, all $.02 gratefully received!
