But in the case of energy use a correlation CAN be drawn - a barrel of oil produces the equivalent of about 23,000 hours of human work. Think how many people it would take to ship a single container of crap from walmart across the country (or even a state)

Manufacturing, communication and transportation RELY on energy - hence there is a direct causal link.
