Milk is a hard thing to give up. I replace it with cream. Cream has fewer carbs because of not having the milk sugars. Straight cream is a little difficult to take so I make "cream shakes" from about a cup of water in a blender with unsweetened cocoa mix, (Hersheys) some Splenda for sweetness and a bunch of ice. Grind it all up into a slushy, and then add in some cream and blend briefly again. Don't blend the cream with the ice and water or you will get butter from blending the cream too long.

They taste like wonderful milk shakes and give you a good substitute.

I also buy Torani sugar free syrups and mix a little in with a small glass of cream. I eat it with a spoon and it is like eating candy. The flavors of Torani syrup I like best are caramel and English Toffee. Taste good in a little cream.

Yes you really should read a book. Most of us here started on Atkins. Protein Power is also a great one if you are interested in science. You MUST understand why the diet works. Without that it is so easy to be doing something wrong and not even understand why. So many on here have come and said "I'm not losing, how come?" When we ask them to list their foods they are invariably eating something that simply isn't allowed on the diet. It is because they haven't understood it very well.

Knowledge is power.

Fruit for instance can be very high in sugar. Berries are pretty low, but you would eat them in a real limited quantity just the same. Things like that. Atkins advises keeping carb grams to under 20 per day for the first two weeks. 20 is NOT very many, (some people actually think eating 100 grams a day is "low carb").

The people who lose the fastest are those who go on 20 or less and who are just starting out. You don't need to keep it to 20 all the way through your diet, but you need to know where your body's range for loss is.
