In reply to: jaytee 's message, "I'm not hip to all the abbreviations. What is CAD?" on 09:00:30 08/09/02 Fri

CAD represents the "Carbohydrate Addict's Diet". It is a way modified version of low carb dieting. Essentially the idea is that you eat two of your meals for the day at very low carb levels, and one meal which must be eaten within one hour you call a "reward" meal and can eat anything you want. Supposedly you don't spike your insulin levels that much if you complete the meal within an hour.

Several of the new people on this board are trying it, and they have lost weight, but not nearly as quickly as a true ketogenic diet. With Atkin's and some of the others, you create a condition called ketosis, this burns fat rather than carbs. Since it takes about 3 days for the body to go into ketosis, CAD is not truly a ketogenic diet. Therefore although it (supposedly) works, it doesn't work as quickly.

For me it didn't work well at all, but probably because I had done Atkin's first. However I do use it from time to time as a way to avoid truly cheating. On a day when I can't completely stick to low carb, I have a CAD day instead and just try to get back to my regular plan the next day.

Regarding the effects you can expect while going off the diet, it really depends I think on how much time you have already spent on low carb. You can expect some really dramatic reactions if you aren't careful. I sometimes get to feeling sick to my stomach or bad indigestion after suddenly eating a high carb meal after eating low carb for a long time. Bread particularly does this to me, and especially when I eat a lot of bread and drink a lot of water at the same time.

I think you will probably be ok with Japanese food though (if that is what she is serving). I think the Japanese eat prety healthy, and the only thing you will have to worry about probably is the rice, just keep that to a minimum and you should be ok.
