Subject: Sugar alcohols, yogurt, Splenda and more...

Here's the low down:

Sugar alcohols - many specialists claim that sugar alcohols have no impact on blood sugar, and therefore can be deducted from the total carbs. The most commonly used is Maltitol (mostly in sugar free chocolates), which unfortunately can cause gas and diahrrea when consumed in too large of quantities. Many people have found that these can/do slow or stall their weight loss. Consume with caution. See how they work on your body. I personally count 1/2 the carbs as that seems to be the way they affect me.

Splenda - is made from sugar. One of the molecules is exchanged or has a chlorine molecule instead of the one that was there. This causes it to pass through your body without being digested. It causes no rise in blood sugar and in its liquid form has 0 carbs. The bulk and packet forms of Splenda are bulked up with maltodextrin to make it measureable (Splenda is 600 times sweeter than sugar), so each packet/teaspoon counts as 1 carb. The sugar free syrups (De Vinci) use liquid Splenda so truly are carb free. (Watch out for the Torini syrups as they use a combination of Splenda and sugar alcohols.)

Yogurt - Count half the carbs. The bacteria in the creation process "eats" the sugar, so only half of the carbs that remain are utilized by your body. You should only eat plain (not vanilla) yogurt, as it has no added sugar. You can sweeten and flavor it yourself (don't forget to add the carbs from whatever you add to it).

I hope this helps!
