You are going to get different opinions on this depending on who you ask. Protein Power says that you should work out on an empty stomach and not eat for an hour afterwards.

I try and do it this way because I trust what he says. It seems to have some solid science behind it. His reasoning is that your body releases "human growth hormone" during excercise and while you sleep (assuming you don't eat too late before going to bed).

He says that things that can hinder the release of hgh are: "Increased blood glucose levels, increased blood free fatty acids, obesity and pregnancy"

Things that stimulate its release are: "decreased blood glucose levels, increased blood protein levels, carbohydrate restricted diet, fasting, increased protein diet, free fatty acid decrease, PGE (a "good" eicosanoid), stage IV sleep and excercise".

Having more growth hormone in your body is a good thing. It helps to increase bone density (especially along with weight training), makes your skin fresher and younger, helps your muscles heal from excercise and grow stronger helps you to have the kind of metabolism that teenagers have, etc.

It is a great chapter in the book Protein Power chapter 7 about excercise. (It may be in a different chapter in different versions of the book).

Now if you ask the average personal trainer or body builder you might get a different answer. They seem to have a different theory about when you are supposed to eat.

I'm assuming that you are doing all this to lose fat rather than to build huge muscles. When you think of it that way, consider your aerobic activity. Aerobics is for fat burning particularly. It is high energy activity. After eating you will have glycogen in your blood and muscles. Glycogen will always burn first anytime you need it. Having most of it out of your system when working out, will require your body to go to your fat stores to get the energy it needs.

On the other hand sometimes you may not have the energy readily available to work to your maximum intensity if the glycogen isn't available to you.

What you will need to do is to decide for yourself which method works better, can you give it your ALL every time you work out? Would eating before make a difference? What are your workout goals? Burning fat or building muscle or both?

If you want to understand the other part of the arguement, you can go to this site:

And read my question on the general board about Human Growth Hormone.

The weight lifters for the most part didn't agree with the statements in Protein Power. They explained thier reasoning behind it, but I'm not entirely sure I understood what they meant.
