Hope I did not add to your confusion. The advice posted byt he others is solid.

From my reading, some advice is that for building, your lift the weight which will challenge you in about 8 reps (ie after 8 you just cant do any more). For toning & slimming you want to aim for a weight that enables you to do 15-20 reps per set.

Of course some people bulk up really easily, if you are one of those, you definitely want to go for really low weights & lots of reps.
