Educate yourself. Get the Atkin's book and the Protein Power book and read about how and why low carb works. It makes it easier to stay on track when you understand what is going on. Come here for any additional questions you might have, and for the emotional support we all need to hang in there.

Then set a date and get started. Pay attention to your dieting, and don't let your calories fall too low. You should be consuming about 12 calories for every pound that you currently weigh. Obviously as you lose weight the total will go lower.

A lot of people lose a lot of weight on this plan because once you have been on it awhile you find that you aren't that hungry and aren't eating as much. This can backfire on you a little eventually though if you let the calorie count go too low, the body thinks it is starving and slows the metabolism.

You can increase your metabolic rate by adding in excercise to the plan. I believe weight training is the best overall excercise, but that is my opinion. I like it because by building extra muscle your body continues to burn more calories even while at rest.

Anyway welcome aboard, I hope you succeed mightily. We all CAN do this thing. Persistance is the key.

  • The Atkin's plan is the way most of us started or are now on. Buying the book and getting aquainted with the diet would be helpful. Mostly you stay under 20 carbs a day for the first 2 weeks and then gradually add carbs until you find your max without losing weight. Being familiar with low carb foods is a must and keep them stocked up at home helps. (NT) -- Shara, 13:26:56 07/10/02 Wed
