Bay did not respond to the girl�s tensing, knowing that she could not be too friendly, but of course she would not react harshly. It had been in her training as a protector to treat the one under her care with respect, but as a mentor as well. The former Sarmatian realized what she was thinking, and quickly scolded herself for allowing the past to interfere with the present. �This child is not like Lyra; I am not protecting her�� Baylina had fallen deep into thought, almost forgetting Nitasha was there; however, she woke from her daydream once she felt the slight pain from the wound.

�Not that I know of�� Baylina said in response to Nitasha�s question. It was clear that being treated so kindly was not something that Bay understood, especially when things had not gone so smoothly with the king.

She observed Nitasha as she stood, and once again the air of fear lingered in the atmosphere like a relentless shadow. Baylina did not understand �she had treated Nitasha fairly from the beginning, so why did the girl�s persistent fears continue to haunt her? Then Baylina proceeded to realize that Nitasha had witnessed her kill the guard; how could she have forgotten that the child had probably never seen a woman fight, much less kill someone�

�I only killed that man because the king ordered him to attack me �it was either my life or his. I�m sorry you had to see that.� Bay told Nitasha carefully. �Where I�m from�� Then she paused, not sure if she should continue; it could get her into more trouble if Nitasha were to go and spread anything pertaining Baylina�s past to the other slaves. The last thing she wanted was more dilemmas, or anymore fights with the king and his guards.
