Subject: Older age groups

Why does NE regularly list in their syllabus 17+ as the oldest open group. We no longer feis in New England because the oldest group have a 10+ age span. Mid-Atlantic have mostly changed to a u18, u20 and 20+ age groups. In upcoming Harvest feis, 10% of entire registrations, and 27% of all open registrations are in this one age group. Doesn't that speak volumes when 1 age group is that large compared to the entire feis?

My daughter is 19 (Open U20) and has been in Open since she was 15. In our experience, it depends on the feis. Between 17 and 19, she has competed in competitions that were U18, 18 but under 20 and combined with ages 17 and over. At 17, she was in one comp where she was the only 17 year old in a total group of 9 or 10 dancers and most were 20+ (she actually placed.) Even when they do have U18, U20 and 20+ on the syllabus, they often combine due to low numbers.

[> Subject: Keep in mind that groups are very often smaller in NE than in MAR. If you offer U18 and U20 and then you don't get enough registrations, you may have to combine comps. And if you do that, people HOWL. If you offer 17+ and get enough registrations, you can always split the comp. And many do split them once the numbers are in.

[> Subject: Offer older age groups, IF enough don't sign up, then combine age groups. Clearly state that in the syllabus. SO UNFAIR to these girls, if they are worried about the cost of a trophy, then just give a gift card and run comps concurrently.

Per post on Facebook today, older age groups will be split. This is something we have always done in the past and will do the same this year. Thank you for your concern. We always try our best to make our feis a positive experience for everyone!!

[> Subject: More may register if syllabus stated u18, u20 and 20+. No syllabus starts open with u10 and u8, u9 and u10 very rarely have more than 2 or 3 dancers. Reasoning just doesn't hold across the board. Littles can have small groups, but when you're old, it doesn't matter that you are dancing with others in a 10 year age gap.
