Once the awareness is awakened, it is easier to see the atman and prana and its interplay.

There are no easy, quick, and simple answers. Most answers can be more or less inferencial rather than direct.

Subtle is the mind, intellect, chitta, and ego. Still subtler is the prana and
Subtlest is the Atman - Self or Buddha nature -- whatever one prefers to call.

Meditation on Atman is far more subtle than meditation on Pranas. For these reasons, Bhagawan Mahavir never advocated pranayama but exponded more on the Atma-dhyana called Samayik and pratikraman.

There are some very profound and beautiful expositions on Atman in Digambar Jain liturature - pretty much overlooked upon and most books are in Gujarati.

At a minimum, You can study the following texts for a better understanding on the relationship between Prana and Atman.

1. Brihdaranyak Upanisad
2. Spanda Karika with Jiadeva Singh COmmentary
3. Ramana Maharshi discourses or dialogues etc.
3. Brahma Sutra of Badraya with Shaankarbhashyam.

Here is a link for Brihdaranyak Upanisad.
