I forgot to mention that before getting into understanding the mechanics of Prana, it is indespensible to understand the breath.

Here are couple of references:
1. Annapana sati Sutra
2. Chapter 3 and 5, of The "Book of Secret" aka Vignanbhairav tantra is highly recommended work which explains breath and prana in a very simple terms. Of COurse, the entire book is mind blowing ..
