Subject: Not necessarily, if you're collecting unemployment. Inside

I can only speak for Florida, but while you're on unemployment, you have to "claim" any wages you make, whether from part time work, temp work, whatever. If your gross wages are less than the amount of your unemployment benefit, then unemployment pays the difference. The problem is that there is only income tax on unemployment compensation. On any true wages earned, you have to also pay social security and medicare. So you could actually end up with your net pay being LOWER for the week if you work.

It only pays to work while on unemployment if you can be sure that you earn MORE than unemployment--and not just slightly more--it has to be enough to cover the extra payroll taxes. Otherwise you might as well just stay home and get the unemployment and enjoy your free time. As bad as that is, that is the way the system works, unfortunately. They want you to look for work, yet you are penalized financially when you do find something small.

Also, there is the added problem that if you are working, you have less time to look for a better job, less free time to go to interviews, etc. So you could end up stuck in a job that is nowhere near enough to keep your bills paid.

Isn't that disgusting? The DIS-incentives for people to work are ASTOUNDING! When you can collect more money from the government for staying HOME, then something is incredibly wrong!

I have a friend who owns a growing local business. He said that since the Recession started in 2008/9, people come in all the time looking for work, take a business card and leave w/o leaving a resume, setting up an interview or anything. All they have to do is say they "looked" and staple a business card to "prove" it. They really don't want a job, they just need to jump thru the hoops so they can get their next government check.
