- Since we don�t have thanksgiving over here, my cutoff point is usually All Saints day (which is a holiday in this part of the country, although I had to work this year..) but so far, tv advertisements are not all that christmasy. But I do have to say, all the christmas stuff that is already on display in stores is seriously turning me off. - Christmas should not start before Thanksgiving is over. It use to start with the Thanksgiving Macy day parade went Santa arrived at the end in his sleigh. I think all the commercialism has taken the real meaning out of Christmas. The togetherness of family and the birth of our Savior. Now it's all commercials on TV, Radio, shopping and gifts. - For 10 years, I worked at Bucilla (a needlecraft company). We had a saying there, "It's Christmas everyday at Bucilla", since one dept. or another was working on Christmas stuff everyday of the year. All this college stuff is making me crazy. I'm not prepared to lose my kid. Not prepared for all the transcripts, applications, application fees, scholarship stuff, college tours. I want her to be in kindergarten again and not an almost completely independent 17 year old. *sigh*
My middle daughter will be 14 on Sunday. Where did my babies go? Someone took them while I was at work. LOL

- One of the things they don't tell you about going in to Senior Year is all the freakin' FEES! Thru the roof prices for senior portraits, all kinds of academic-based fees, fees to take tests, fees to graduate, fees to apply to colleges, etc. It's worse than buying a house! If there's one thing I'd say to Parents with kids just starting high school, be prepared to spend about $1000 on Senior Year. Sheesh! - A bit late, but one thing I learned from some older friends a few years ago is to start looking at colleges after their sophomore year and definitely after their junior year. We have taken summer "look" vacations. That seems to help a bit. Senior picture prices are nuts. I went crazy with the first kid. The second said one morning, "Hey Mom, I need a picture for the yearbook and it's due TODAY." He went to Kiddie Kandids at the mall and loved the pictures. Now I have the third child who is a senior. - The whole college application process is such a racket, IMO. It's SO important for our children to really have a fairly good idea of where they would like to go -- geographically, as well as, academically, and vocationally and then, to narrow down the possibilities from there.   - Luckily she only has 3 she is interested in and all of them are within 6 hrs of us. She wants to go into Radiology but wants her Bachelors so insteadof a 2 year course with one summer semester she has to take a 4 year course. The hard part is getting all of the scholarship info in in time to quilify. You cant apply too early but you cant apply too late either. . . .rather I have a school district owned iPad. The purpose? I'm trying to figure that one out. Short answer, I am tasked with identifing possible uses of an iPad in the classroom, in a school library, and in my office (district finance office). Any ideas? Our technology department is all for them and currently all our administrators have one. Of course now the teachers all want one. Is there a practical educational use for them or are they mostly (at school ages) used for games and networking (ie facebook)?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Either here or by email.

- See if there's a way they can be interfaced with some sort of group. Teachers can share ideas, students can work on projects, etc. For file-sharing, try "Dropbox" (first 2Megs are free). Also, if your school has Smart Boards, there might be a classroom interface with those. - As a retired teacher of 34+ years, I know there is value in all the new technology, BUT I am very concerned about the use of many of these at the elementary level. The basics are the basics and in some cases, they are throwing them aside for the introduction of these handheld devices. I remember when our district spent oodles of money on reading machines only to have them stored a few years later in a dust collecting stoage room. - I agree with Jenks. I do believe there is a place for technology (and there are seminars on classroom uses for it) but this is an example of education dollars not reaching classrooms. In our district, it's the PTAs who are buying this stuff, primarily for elementary teachers while the high school teachers have less. That being said, I can see technology advances simplifying work for administrators, allowing them to be "on the move" rather than sitting in offices.   - Funny you should mention PTA, TH. They were always buying something "extra" which, in many caseswas needed, but when budgets are cut, supplies are totally limited, then tech gadgets are a luxury and not a necessity. Another sad event is the ridiculous belief by schools that all students have computers in their homes. Many families who are just trying to scratch by, can't afford one and need to drive to somewhere else to use one. I have been griping about this since before I retired. - I would *love* to have an iPad! And I am seeing more and more uses for my work, where it would be practical and efficient to have one. However, I cannot really see what use it would be in a school setting.   - Actually our schools are wireless and most classrooms have smart boards. One of the districts down the coast received a grant to purchase e-readers.     - Mostly for convenience/practicality reasons. For example, I recently went on a week-long business trip to Germany where we took about 90 customers on a tour. I had organized it and accompanied the group. Had to carry a laptop with me to update info at the hotel etc, then carried a fat heavy folder with me at all times that held all info in print (ie guest lists, directions, routes etc). An iPad would have been great to have all info in file format with me at all times, while being able to check things online. Have everything in one location that's lightweight and convenient. School applications that have been considered on the admin side - being able to see student's schedules, real time attendance, emergency contact info.         Yes I can see how it would serve many purposes from an administrative side, making you more flexible and mobile, having all your information at a glance as well as changeable . As for students, I could imagine that in our fast-paced times where they are introduced to TVs and technology so early on, their attention span as well as ability and way to learn change from the ways we learned. Maybe the kiddies *need* to be taught in ways that embrace this new environment. Last week we traveled to Ft. Benning, GA, to see our oldest son graduate from US Army Basic Combat Training. There is nothing quite like standing for the National Anthem on a military base with your son in his uniform only 30 feet away. We are so proud of him for making it through, and yet he has said it wasn't as bad as he'd expected and that he would go thru it again - really! I think mostly because they get to use and train with real weapons, blow things up, learn to fight - all the cool stuff that he's been doing on video games for years!

He enlisted in the National Guard almost a year ago, joining the VA Army National Guard, 29th Infantry Band unit. He graduated from high school this spring, and Basic Training last week, and is now doing his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at the US Army School of Music in Norfolk, VA - on the same base as the Joint Expeditionary Force/Naval Amphibious Training base. He says that after his Guard stint is done (5 more years), he wants to go active duty. He has decided that he enjoys the Army way of life, and he is well-suited for it, as he has always had a good grasp on the core Army values (which are really "life" values). He hopes to join one of the service bands in the DC area (which is really tough to do!).

He says the hardest thing so far about the School of Music is having to learn both Navy and Marine rank and lingo, but I told him all his years of watching JAG with me will help! LOL

So I join the ranks of "Sister Soldier Mamas" out there. Hoo-ah!

- I do love autumn. Here in Indiana, the weather has been nearly perfect for the past 2 weeks. High 60's to 70's, some nights down in the 40's, yummy bonfire and cider weather, sigh! To consolidate and to save money, I just switched to cable which includes my internet, tv, and home phone services. The savings was substantial, even when figuring in the sizable increase after one year. However I have two problems.

1. I no longer have the built in DVR that Dish provided. My family really liked this feature. I can "rent" one for $10/month or...I can buy one. I bought one once before and it was ridiculously hard to use. Can anyone recommend an easy to use DVR?

2. I have lots of local news coverage on my DISH DVR. I'd like to get the stuff off. Can anyone recommend or email me "instructions for technologically challenged" for me to do this?

I'd be ever so appreciative!!!

- TiVo makes DVRs for cable, and the are super easy to use. TiVo is the standard by which I judge all other DVRs, and no others can top TiVo unless they use the TiVo model for their software. JMHO. The thing you have to get from your optometrist is the "pupillary distance" (PD), which is the distance between your pupils and tells the lens-maker where to set the Rx in the lens (so you get the most benefit from looking straight thru your lenses). I got home yesterday from my daughter's house where I spent 5 days "baby sitting" 4 dogs; one is deaf and has limited vision, 3 cats, a hamster and a tank of fish while she was in Dallas. (Nobody told me my grandchildren were going to have fins and fur!)Things went well for the first 2 days. Then Bandit knocked over the hamster's cage in the middle of the night and presented me with a dead hamster at 6am. What a way to start the day! By 7 I'm in the back yard,after going to the store to buy a shovel, digging a hole to bury the hamster. The next day I came out of the bathroom to find 5 month old Disney tearing the stuffing out of a couch cushion. I'm yelling "No Disney bad dog" at the deaf dog. I got that cleaned up and sprayed the couch. I figure nothing else can go wrong. Wrong! I locked myself out of the house and on the last day the fish start dying. Even though half the animals died, she wants me to come back next year!

I hope everyone out on the east coast does as they are advised and evacuates. I love Hatteras and Nags Head in particular. I have alot of personal memories of that place.

Boarding up during hurricane season wasnt unusual for the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area in the 15 years we lived there, we even evacuated when Gloria came through in 85, but somehow the forecasts seem so much more ominous, this week.

When I heard that the Outer Banks may be changed forever by this hurricane. It broke my heart. I hope it doesnt happen.

  - I'm sure you have alot of 'hurricane' memories with your long career in the Navy. I was lucky when Gloria came through because my DH was between duty stations and didnt have to get underway, with his ship.
