  My husand and son are both trying to convice me to get rid of our land line phone and just keep our cell phones. We have cable internet and our cable tv but we don't get any of the premium channels...HBO, Showtime, etc. We figure that we can save almost $200./month just by doing this. My son wants us to subscribe to just basic cable, keep the internet and use the cell phones. He said that we can subscribe to Hulu.com and Netflix cheaper than the cable expanded basic.
  
  Has anyone done all of this? We do get a really good deal on our cell phones since we are on my son's plan and he works for Verizon Wireless. Our land line isn't that expensive either. But I am jsut not too sure that I want to give up my land line. so many people have my phone number and I can't use my cell phone at work because the signal is horrible.
  
  Any suggestions. I am just so very confused.

  • I'll never give up my landline. I don't want to have to carry my cell phone all over the house in case I get a call. And I hate the sound quality of cell phones. If someone calls my cell phone while I'm at home, and it is actually on, and I actually hear it, I tell them to call me back on my landline. LOL I also like being able to fax from home, which is very important given DH's employment status (or lack thereof).   • I would never give up my landline either. The reason is because there are so many instances that you have to give out your phone number and quite frankly I don't want everybody having my cell phone number. For example, I don't want to enter my cell phone online when I am ordering online. I don't want my printed checks to have my cell phone.     • I'm with you - first - anyone who has known us from centuries back can find us with our old landline number we've had for fifteen years. Secondly, I can give that number out to stores (who nowadays all want your phone number at checkout) and not worry about my cell phone number getting around.   • we have a very basic dish network package - I pay 10 dollars and get very little - just enough to keep us entertained - every month someone has a free channel so we'll watch something different. My hubby gets netflix and my son is always watching movies on his laptop with it. so if you don't really watch the 9,000 channels - yeah you can save a lot by downsizing cable. As for the landline.   • Put me in the "Keep the Landline" category!! We have Verizon for local service and we pay $25/month for "local only outgoing calls" and "anywhere incoming calls". We can only call our area code, but anyone can call us from anywhere in the world. We use our cell phones for long distance. PLUS, I keep one "corded" phone. *If* the power goes out, I can still make a call. Even with 4 cell phones in the family, I just feel safer and more prepared with a landline.     • You have to decide what's important.. We do have cable, but we pay $11/month for "Broadcast" service. It's all the "over-the-air" channels distributed to our area. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox television (not FOX news), local government channels, some home shopping, PBS. We have internet thru our cable company for another $34/month, so we pay no more than $45/month for both cable tv and internet service. We have NetFlix for $9/month, and pay $120 for 3 cell phones with n'Telos. We've got the cheapest set-up we can get for our area. .   • My reason for keeping my landline (besides those stated above) is safety: if a loss of electricity knocks out the cell towers, my landline just keeps on ticking. Ithas happened in the past.     • Yeah, several years ago, our city had to shut down its entire grid for several hours. Our area was one of last restored and we were without power for about 12 hours. Thanks to our corded landline phone, I was able to talk to my mom (who also had a corded phone) during all of that.   • Got rid of my landland line years ago and dont miss it at all. I had no reason to keep it and to me it was a waste of money. My cell is always with me and it was my primary number before hand.       • Yeah, he knew I felt that strongly about it, but it is his way of saving money. If we every have to give out a phone number for home business, etc. it will be his number that is given.     • I have a cell, of course, but I would NEVER get rid of my land line. I hate walking around everywhere with the cell, I often forget to charge it, and if the power goes out...which it does in very windy weather, you can't charge your cell that easily. I also have a wall jack too. Cell phones are easy to lose, and they make you a slave to the darn ringing wherever you are.     • Sorry about that, MB! I'm still sticking to my guns, too. As for what to tell businesses that want a phone # when you check out, ask if they can process the transaction w/o it. If not, give them the # of a nearby business like a McDonalds or a Walgreens. It's not like they're ever gonna call it, but it will keep them from selling your # to a sales person.   • One thing I didn't see mentioned in the "keep the landline" catagory - 911 emergency calls - if you need to call 911 - even if you need to leave they have your address - not so with all cell phones - you need to give them your location.     • I mentioned that very thing inside my first post. But even if you get rid of your landline service, you can keep a landline phone for that purpose. They HAVE to put 911 calls through regardless of whether that phone is connected to a paid-up service. That goes for old cell phones that don't have service too.       • That part is important for me because my husband works away a lot, and even when he's here, he has heart disease. I don't want to be looking around for a little cell in the middle of the night.   • I'm not giving my landline up on the suggestion of my son who works for Time Warner. I have the cable television (all major networks plus), internet and phones on the cable bill.   • So far, it has been going well. The hardest part is when I go to make a call. I always reach for the phone on the wall, then I remember. I also have a hard time keeping my cell phone with me. We figure that we will save about $500 to $600 a year by just discontinuing the land line and cutting back to basic cable. I have to remember to burn some of my other DJE movies/shows to a DVD before next week. That's when the DVR goes away.   Case #1.I have a friend whose sister had her tummy lipo suctioned 2 years ago. She had all the kids she wanted and she was left with tummy fat that would NOT exercize or diet away. It looked really nice...for about 6 months then it all came back and then some. Mind you she didnt continue to exercise afterwards either.
  
  Case #2.A coworker had gastric bypass with awesome results and she is 4 years in. She was morbidly obese with high blood pressure and diabetes. She is now non diabetic and her blood pressure it quite normal.
  
  Case #3. Botox. There are so many actresses who used to be classic beauties. Not knock yer socks off sex kitten gorgeous but truly classicly beautiful. Now they look like god awful frozen stare Cupie Dolls. Really scarey. My BIL has a sister who got bad botox and almost died.
  
  My question to ponder is this (and I know it is a personal choice but my flesh and bone friends and I discuss this all the time)...when is it too much?
  Personally I would consider lipo if I could afford it. I would consider a nose job only because my father broke my nose and it is a tad crooked. LOL I wouldnt advocate it for my teen girls of course cause they are perfect in my eyes but....where do you draw the line? When is perfection perfect?
  Not starting any arguements. I would like honest grown up opinions on this. Discuss away. LOL

  • This is difficult. One thing is for sure: really well done plastic surgery you won´t recognize as such. (Unless you have a before and after picture). There´s nothing beautiful about people where you see they´ve been surgically altered from 100m away. Botox is great if you have a stiff neck, but for minor wrinkles? A face is so much more expressive when it actually moves. Gastric bypass is not plastic surgery. It´s a last ditch effort for obese people who are unable to lose weight otherwise, to help with all the side effects of obesity. Inside... -- Jam, 04:25:20 06/08/11 Wed
    • On the PS side. I'm not opposed to it as such, I just think you can have too much of a good thing. I also agree about taking GS out of the equation, but then do we put laser/lasic surgery in. Some people look stunning with glasses but feel miserable, should they be made to wear them anyway? On the makeup question above, it's interesting you should bring that up.       • Maybe your friend and I should start a business....there has got to be a market for oddly shaped pants, we can´t be the only ones? Another things that always bugs me: why do clothing companies think if you´ve got a big butt, you´ve also got short legs????? Back to PS: I wouldn´t put lasic surgery in there, either, because it corrects a disability. Poor eyesight may not be a major one, but still is.       • I have the same problem with the waist/hip ratio. My waist has remained small through the years, yet I seem to have "spreading six" disease, i.e. my butt has gotten bigger, along with my hips, and lower gut. I have at least a12 inch difference between my waist and hips, which makes it very hard to find pants, esp jeans. I have given up and just wear elastic waist pants and jeans.   • I agree with Jam in taking Gastric Bypass out of the equation. It *is* elective surgery for most, but it is more medical than cosmetic. It has nice cosmetic effects (weight loss), but health is the #1 reason for it. So, for purely cosmetic/visual reasons, if you are unhappy with your body parts, you need to figure out why.   • I totally agree with you about Botox, I've yet to see anything I would envy or emulate in that. Gastic Bypass, I think its an individual thing. I have a relative who is 3 years in and she looks and feels better than she has since she was a child and thats no exaggeration. She also has her blood pressure and blood sugar under control, no meds at all. Plastic surgery, personnally, I'm so sick of surgery, you couldnt pay me to have the surgery.   • LOL- Fifteen years ago we went to visit family and my mom looked at one of her cousins and said how do stay looking so young. She answered plastic surgery. My mom said but you don't look it - and my aunt said the trick is to pick a good surgeon and make sure he follows your instructions - Mom asked what was the instructions.   • I once had a roomate who had loads of really great plastic surgery. She looked amazing! However, she did nothing to improve her arrogant, condescending attitude she had toward people, and, in fact, the more physically beautiful she became, the meaner she got!     • This is you restraining yourself? LOL. You´re right, though. This youth obsession is appalling. I once read an interview with a plastic surgeon based in LA. There are different forms of breast implants (round and more shaped like a pear, to give it a more natural look). He said, most of his customers wanted the round implants -they wanted them to look fake. WTH??????       • Yes, I was being a hardass on the GP, and I realise that there are many people for whom it is a last resort. But as the figures show that a very large percentage of people with large weight losses, regardless of their method, tend to put the weight back on again, I think surgery has to be viewed from every possible angle, after serious attempts at diet and excercise have been eliminated.     • I worked with a woman in the medical field who had the GP surgery. She lost a ton of weight but put it and more back on. It takes a lot ofdicscipline after this kind of surgery or you just stretch the stomach right back out again.         • It´s the brain. Essentially, the stomach signals the brain when it´s full, so you´re not hungry anymore. That signal doesn´t get there, or too late, when the stomach is all stretched out. So a smaller stomach, that doesn´t hold so much food, will leave you less hungry much earlier.   • GB or the lapbelt is sometimes the last resort for many people. Sometimes it for medical reason. A person with a heart condition or bad back who can't exercise.   • I can't even imagine your pain in breaking a whole hand. I broke a finger a couple years ago and it was super painful and debilitating. Do try to keep walking, though, even if just for 15-20 minutes a day. Losing wieght actually helps improve your immunity and decrease inflammatory processes. Make sure you're not in pain, though!   • While I have some ebooks on my computer, I really prefer actual books that I can carry around everywhere without having to turn something on and risking running out of power....I´m all about relaxation reading right now, so I bought The Hunger Games trilogy a couple of days ago, will start with that.   Am an ex-spouse of a Naval Officer. *Divorced in 2001, and receive a portion of his retirement each month. Also,the Survivors' Benefits were kept in my name -- its written into the divorce decree. Since the premiums are deducted from ex-spouse's retirement, I reimburse a percentage (*determined by the attorneys based on his active duty years in service while we were married ((10+ years active duty of 25-year marriage))) of the premiums back to him via direct deposit. Recently, a friend mentioned that her husband (also retired Navy) will be turning 70 on his next b'day and he'll no longer have to pay the SB premiums. Just wondering if anyone can tell me, what, if anyting, I have to do to keep the SB in my name -- probably going to have to go back to the attorney (and I don't like him).   a friend of mine (she's in her 70s) is having breast cancer surgery in a couple of weeks. The plan is to do a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction surgery.
  
  My question is - how can I help.
  
  I know there are lots of folks out there who are or know breast cancer survivors - What would be the most blessing. Should I go to the hospital? Is there a particular gift that anyone found most helpful? anything I can do?

  • A friend of mine here is undergoing exactly the same reality. What she says has been a tremendous help to her is that we have organized cooking meals for her and her family during the time she was receiving and recoveringfrom her surgery and now during the days (every 2 weeks right after she has her chemo and radiation. The days of and afterward for up to 6 days she is completely 'spent' and told me it is a true Godsend when the meals come in every night of those days for her DH and 2 sons.   • I have a friend who has just undergone a long round of surgeries and chemo. She was sad that some friends and relatives have stayed away, and seem afraid to even meet her for coffee when she suggests it. So my suggestion is to visit your friend in hospital, and treat her as you normally would. Whatever you do, don't stay away unless she tells you she needs time alone. Just be her friend as usual, and know when to let her rest when she wants it. She will be exhausted much of the time so take your cues from her. I hope things go well for her. Typically, people get sent home from the hospital within a couple of days and she's likely to have all sorts of tubes, etc. that will make doing much housework next to impossible. An offer to take care of routine chores like changing the sheets, running the vacuum, etc. if she doesn't normally have help might be really appreciated too.   • The last friend (smile) I sent a package to appreciated receiving some DVDs & a digital picture frame. If she's too tired to read, DVDs are an easy solution for entertainment to take your mind off "things." I brought her low-fat yogurts the first time and she RAVED at how she survived on these for her nutrition. I brought her a few this time, but have gone back and bought her a dozen more -- fruit-flavored, organic, low-fat with live biocultures. They are tolerated much better than full-fat.       • I second the recommendation to visit the Parthenon. It's actually based on drawings of the real Parthenon made by a gentleman who visited it and made meticulous drawings of it before it was damaged in war. It was originally built as the main symbol of the Southern Exposition - not unlike a World's Fair, sort of Nashville's Eiffel Tower. As for the "Athens of the South" nickname - Nashville has 7 or 8 universities, so is a seat of learning. If you are looking for a fabulous restaurant - try the Acorn.   Also last week, almost the whole town of Slave Lake, Alberta, burned down from wild fires. Fortunately, no one was killed, but it is still horrible to lose your home and possessions, not to mention your town.

  I have always been curious about superstitions and especially so because today is Friday the 13th, considered by many people to be an unlucky day. Some superstitious people cancel doctor's appointments, avoid travel and put off other risky behaviors in an effort not to tempt fate on Friday the 13th.
  
  In general, are you a superstitious person about this day or about other things in your life? Do you carry a talisman for good luck? Do you avoid walking under ladders or stepping on sidewalk cracks? If you are not in the U.S., what superstitious beliefs are there in your country?

  • I usually "think" about the common superstitions when I see them happen (black cat, etc), but don't put any stock in them. I don't walk under Ladders because it's not safe in general. I open umbrellas in the house tho - how are they going to dry out? I had a roommate who was always throwing salt over her shoulder (she made a lot of popcorn, spilled a lot of salt). I think there was a whole shaker-full in our carpet when we moved out.   • I'm not really a superstitious person, but I cant say that, when I hear that its Friday the 13th, that I dont think of possible bad luck. I dont base my life on it, I'm not afraid to take a trip or plan anything important that day.   • superstition and fundamental christian don't mix well - but I think for the average person the tell would be in the US 13 is an unlucky number - in some south american countries 13 is a LUCKY number- it's all in the perceptions - believing is usually very closely related to receiving -whether it's positive hopes or negative fears.   • I'm mildly superstitious for things like Friday the 13th (I'm always relieved when Saturday rolls around), but my real superstition is about saying things are good, and risking that they suddenly change. For example, when people ask, "How's Peter (DH) doing?" I always answer, "So far, so good." He is doing well now, a little past a year from his bone marrow transplant, but I feel anxious even writing that, for fear it will somehow change something!   • I don't put much stock in them, but I sort of agree with Deemus above about what you say. I often jokingly say that I've "jinxed" myself when I make a positive declaration. I also hold to the theory that taking an umbrella with you will prevent it from raining, i.e. it only rains when you DON'T have an umbrella.   • I'm not superstitious (my bd is on the 13th,) in the sense that something mysterious or magical will bring bad luck. However, incidents, which have no relation or bearing on a particular action, gain significance merely because we find out about them in the context of our "bad luck." e.g. 9/11 the date, being the emergency call number.
