• You have all be there for others, I am asking you to be there for me. My heart is broken. My Mother died around 4:00am today. Tears are pouring out. I lived with her my whole life and I realize that kept her going for the past years. She didn't want to want to be in a nursing home as it was with her mother. I just can't control my crying and she told me that I was stronger that I realize and everything would be ok.   • My sister has to go back to her house( in another town) for a few days and wants me to go with her her. I might do that. Its been so hard and I keep playing back the Saturday phone calls mom made to me from the hospital. She seem to be doing ok. I understand that as time goes by it will get easier, as it did when my father died 30 years ago. It will be hard going back to work because she used to work in the same office before she had to retire because of her health. Its going to be so very hard. I just wish I could hug her again. You have to realize you gave your mom a beautiful gift by letting her live her last days how she wanted to. I miss my mom on those days when I need a good hug. Moms give the best hugs its true. She would want you to celebrate her life and not dwell on her passing. Take time to grieve but dont burden her memory by keeping yourself from going on too.   I am so incredibly sad right now and as a mother I cant imagine dealing with news like this. My best friend called. She took her daughter ,23 year old soon to be mother with new found cervical cancer, to an obstetrical oncologist today. They put her in the hospital right away as she has a really bad bladder infection and was having labor pains. It seems the tumor is really big and is impeding her bladder functions. The nurses in L&D thought it was the baby's head when they checked her.
  The OB oncologist came in to see them and told them that the outlook isnt good. They scheduled a C-section for Wednesday and they think the baby should be fine even though he sint due for anohter 6-7 weeks. She had shots last week to mature his lungs in case this scenario played out. He said if the cancer hasnt spread she is looking at rigorous aggressive chemo 5 days a week for 6 weeks just to start.
  My friend and I have been inseperable since my oldest was a baby and I have been there to see this kiddo grow up from about 9 years old. I cant even imagine what my friend is going through right now. I would really appreciate continued prayers for them. Her daughter is so worried about her baby being born healthy, she cant see past that right now.
  If you have minute, I would be grateful to you all.

Anyhow, as I go off for chemo today my heart breaks for her having to go through this with a new baby....its hard enough with older kids but the hormones being all hinky and wanting to just enjoy her new baby...this just sucks and I will be praying for her and her family.     • She had one then and she had one last year and she had another one 3 moths ago when they thought her amniotic fluid was leaking. They did another amniotic test last week and found some wierd anomolies. That is when they discovered the cancer. It has gotten this far in less than two months.   Somedays I feel so sorry for my daughter - she's been forced to bear the burden of a New York mom in a Southern world. LOL.
  
  
  It really hit me how much my parenting style affects her when one of her best friends since 7th grade realized for the first time I'm a native New Yorker.
  
  
  Here's how the conversation went:
  
  "Your mom's from NY?"
  
  "Well, yeah"
  
  "Oh that explains a lot!"
  
  LOL.
  
  At least I didn't do to her what my mom did to me. When I was about sixteen in high school I had a bunch of friends over one night - I used to love to throw dinner parties. Anyhow, Mom being the ever constant good hostess had asked my friends if they needed fresh drinks.
  
  She wandered into the kitchen to pour the sodas and popped her head back into the living room and said. "Oh by the way I forgot to tell you birth control pills cause blood clots in our family." and then went right back into the kitchen to finish pouring drinks.
  
  My friends and I looked at each other. I think someone actually asked ' Did she just say what I think she said? "
  
  But we laughed it off - I think my daughter would have had a coronary if I'd done something like that to her.

  • I have a silly parent story. I had some girlfriends over one time for a sleep over. We were in my room listening to music etc. Decided to to the fridge for sodas and my mom was standing at the sink washing up some dishes.   • I think it's one of those unspoken rules of parenthood that you're always entitled to embarrass your children no matter how old they are. When my mom was visiting recently, she made a great show of rolling her eyes and saying, "Oh, geez!" every time the elevator stopped on the way down to the lobby of my apartment building (I live on the 35th floor). It was fine at first, but it was mortifying when she kept it up after the fifth or sixth stop, lol.   For as far back as I can remember this poem has been read at family funerals. (and there have been alot). My 10 year old nephew,my brother, my niece, my dad, my sister, my mom.
  I can still read this poem and it lifts me up. It makes me feel better.

  Although she's no longer writing JAG fanfiction or posting, I'm sure many of you remember Sheri Mitchell (her site is Mountainport.ca (sherimitchell@mountainport.ca)) for her wonderful JAG fanfiction. A goat farmer in Saskatchewan province, Canada, she keeps in touch with a few in the JAGverse. Today, she's having surgery for a reoccurrence of cancer, about two years after the initial surgery, chemo and radiation.
  
  She'll be home in 5-6 days, and Annamae will forward any greetings posted.

  My best friends daughter is 8 months pregnant with her first child. She is 23. She was just told yesterday that a biopsy done Friday was positive for cervical cancer. They arent sure if they are going to induce labor or wait until the baby is born. More tests will determine how far it has spread, if at all.
  You guys are awesome for prayers. Please, if you are so inclined, could you send up one for her and her little unborn son?

  I am having surgery on Wed to have a hernia repaired that was caused by a reopening of an area of my c-section scar. I wasnt axnious until people keep telling me its the worst surgery that they have ever had. Well I heard that too about c-sections and that was a breeze.
  
  my mom is coming to stay with me and take care of Ryan who just turned one last month. He is getting big and is walking and jabbering away now. It is going to be hard for us to not be able to get around for a few days and he wont understand why momma cant pick him up.
  
  I have been ill off and on since Jan and have burned up so much PTO/Sick time that I can only take of 2 1/2 wks instead of the 4 my doctor wants me too. I just cant afford to be off that long.
  
  Also after reading the other posts on those that are sick and battling cancer, my thoughts and heart goes out to them.

  • No, but there are lots of different types of hernias, so how difficult the surgery is probably depends on the location of the hernia and the skill of the surgeon. (NT) -- Ann, 22:58:57 04/17/09 Fri
  • My husband had a hernia in the groin area, and his op was out patient surgery that went well (caused manageble pain for about a week.) I have a hiatus hernia, which, according to the docs and all that I've read and heard, does not do wll with surgery.   • My DH also had a hernia repaired. He did very well. Your incisional hernia is a little different. It still may be outpatient, but the recovery is a little longer.   • IO worked in SDS for 2 years and we did lower abdominal surgery all the time. It really depends on your pain tolerance. I've seen poeple come in and be up and walking an our after, then we have those who milk it for all the pain meds they can get. I dont know how it would be any worse than a c-section at all.   What's the best gas prices by you?
  
  
  Last Wed I drove out of my way for gas at $1.73- up to twenty cents less than every one else.
  
  This monday that station was up to $1.83, but still worth the drive
  
  Today, according to the internet, the cheapest prices seem to hover around $1.91 - $1.93 but go as high as twenty cents more other places.

  Please somehow help me to understand why someone would open fire on police officers when they were called to a domestic disturbance? This is what happened in Pittsburgh today. Two policemen responded to a domestic this morning, while another police officer was on his way home from work and decided to give back up to his fellow officers. The result was three police officers are dead, another one is shot in the hand and a fifth one has a broken leg. I am just having a hard time comprehending why he would do this horrible thing. It truly has a city stunned. It is senseless. One of the police officers is a very close friend of one of my co-workers. He has two small children and was so proud of being a Pittsburgh Police officer. My heart breaks for all of their families and the Police force.
  
  We were talking her at work about taking care of the gunman. He was injured also. We all concluded that we would not know how we could care for him or give him pain medication. We all know that we SHOULD give him the same type of care we give all of our patients, but it would be one of the most difficult jobs to have.

  I feel like I haven't been posting as much lately, even though I check the boards every day. Since I seem to visit with you more than my non-HB friends, I should probably update you on what's been going on in my life lately.
  
  My 90 year old grandmother has been in declining health for the past few years, but has been getting increasingly worse since Christmas. She has been falling a lot, and getting more and more confused (dementia, not Alzheimer's). She is now in a nursing home, and has been in the hospital a couple of times. Turns out she has Shy-Drager Syndrome, a form of Parkinson's. Her brain cannot regulate her blood pressure, and when she stands up, her BP drops about 30 or 40 points, causing her to fall. The second time she went to the hospital, she had had a stroke. She arrived there unable to speak or move. She miraculously recovered within a few hours.
  
  Just a couple of weeks ago, she had stopped eating and the doctors wanted to insert a feeding tube. She refused and Hospice was called. Family members came from out of town. She was telling everyone goodbye and literally planning her own funeral. But now, she is sitting up in the wheelchair and going to the dining room to eat. She seems to be doing much better, although she is ready to go to Heaven, and has been ready for quite some time.
  
  If you are so inclined, please pray for her, for my mom who is bearing most of the burden of this, and for the rest of us who are trying to help. There are so many things to be done: going through her stuff, packing up some of it, distributing some to family members, donating some of it, setting some stuff aside for a major garage sale, labeling whatever personal belongings we take to her at the nursing home, moving the remaining furniture into a storage unit, etc. Then there's all the insurance stuff (she has reached the end of the Medicare program that pays for the nursing home), legal stuff, financial stuff...What fun! Not to mention the emotional roller coaster of not knowing how much longer we have with her.
  
  In the midst of all this, as if we weren't under enough stress, DH lost his job due to his company downsizing. We thought his job was secure, so this came as a total shock. At about the same time, my company also had some layoffs. I wasn't one of the ones whose job was eliminated (thank the Lord!), but those of us who were left were saddled with salary reductions. All this came after salary freezes, so things were already tight for us. So now we've lost 62% of our gross income, and Florida's unemployment compensation ranks among the lowest in the country, even though our standard of living is NOT among the lowest. I thank the Lord every day that DH's company was nice enough to give him about 3 months pay and that I still have a job. My company was not as nice to my unfortunate co-workers. We've made a LOT of changes in our lifestyle and cut out a lot of expenses, but that only goes so far when your income won't cover your necessary expenses.
  
  DH is in construction management and there just isn't anything out there right now. If he doesn't find something in the next few months, he is going to have to take a job that's not in his field, because we have to have SOMETHING in order to pay the bills. Fortunately, my cousin owns a couple of Chick-Fil-A restaurants, and has already talked to DH about possibly working as an assistant manager. It wouldn't be ideal (much less pay, unfavorable hours) but it would be a job and he would at least have Sundays off. I really hate for him to have to work in retail for a family member, but he may not have a choice.
  
  When it rains, it pours! The plus side to all this is that DH is doing all the grocery shopping and all the cooking! I'm loving this part! I sure will miss it when he does get a job! LOL
  
  So, please remember us in your thoughts and prayers. It goes without saying that this is difficult time for us. However, it has brought us closer to each other, and strengthened our faith, so some good has already come from all this. Thanks for listening (reading) and being the type of friends I know I can count on for support!

They laid him off by cell phone one day last week as he was walking through the airport. They gave him his sick days and medical until the end of the month.
