I've decided to take control. I went to a website to calculate how many calories I am likely eating a day to maintain the weight I am. I found it is between 1750 and 2000 calories a day. As of Monday, I put myself on a 1500 cal per day diet. I also cut out sugar. So far i'm down 2 pounds. I'm hoping to have time to add more walking but by the time I get home from work and get supper ready and check the kids homework it is dark out. I'm afraid my neighbors will think I'm a creeper if they see me with a flashlight after dark. LOL

I feel really good about myself. I quit smoking 10 years ago. I can do this.

- good girl - just cutting back on starch and sugar should do wonders- I've tried all sorts of different diets lately - including the HGP(?) - but since I've hit 50 I can't seem to maintain my weight easily anymore- it's a horrific battle- It's especially annoying because I'd lost almost forty pounds over the last five years by losing a few and then maintainng and then losing more - maintainig now is so hard (NT) -- chris k, 11:06:29 02/11/12 Sat
  - I think you mean the HCG diet? I opted to not do that one as it has not been approved by the FDA and it is illegal to obtain over the counter. Also there isnt enough research that shows what kind of long term affect HCG has on a non pregnant body. HCG is a hormone produced by pregnancy hormones. I dont mess with stuff I dont know anything about. 1500 cal seems to be working for me. I have noticed the last couple of days that I get full faster so I think my stomach is shrinking which is good.       - The HCG diet requires you to restrict your calories so much to the point where, you really dont need the HCG really. My sister in law did this diet and she could only take in 500-700 calories a day. Well good grief ANYONE whould lose weight with that. A healthy 4 year old gets more then that. Who needs HCG?         i figured out I get the same results with 700-900 calories and including non starch and sugar things they don't want you to use the first days- what I suspect the HCG does is stops your body from thinking in you're in starvation mode and hoarding the fat - it's supposed to stop you from being hungry but that never worked for me - I did better just adding a little more calories in the form of protein. - I've found that Weight Watchers works for the longterm. I lost 42 lbs and have kept it off for 6+ yrs. I changed my eating habits and stay aware of what I put in my mouth. Portion control + excercise is essential. I weigh in every week so the lbs don't creep back on. I seriously recommend it, Being healthy as I age is why I chose WW, rather than crash diets. The important thing whatever you do, is to eat heathly foods, and eat all the good calories you require for health and fitness . I know that I dont psot here often but since this is an international list was looking for some help.

As part of my job I am getting to go to London in late May/early June and I am looking for suggestions of

hotel
food
places to see
suggestions for times to be places and when.

I know I want to see
Stonehinge
the Olympic venues
the Palace and such
Other big tourist spots.

My only days that I cant do much is Wed the 31st as I am presenting my research poster.

Any help and suggestions would be very welcome

- Yes, hi DOS -- I live close to London! Well, for starters -- you can't do all that in 1 day -- lol! Stonehenge is quite a ways from London -- 2 hours, at least and, imo, isn't worth the trip!   - William and Kate were married at Westminster Abbey, I believe one can just go into the church while at St. Paul's -- which is another church worth visiting (and where the American Thanksgiving service is held every year) you now have to buy tickets!!! - I will be there Mon the 28th thru June 3rd. My venue is at a hotel in Hyde Park area. I am not so concerned as staying there because I think it would be wiser to be near the places I want to go and see. I figure that Mon and Tue along with Fri and Sat will be major site seeing days. I know SH might be boring but at least I can say I saw it.   - In that case, combine Stonehenge with a visit to Salisbury. The town is quite pretty with a very beautiful cathedral. - There's a gluten-free aisle in all the markets, here -- Waitrose, Morrisons', Tesco, and M&S and I'm pretty sure you can ask for meals gluten-free in restaurants. Sure, go on a Stonehenge tour -- I think you can best book at the concierge at your hotel -- I would contact them ahead of time and price these excursions so you can allocate your time, budget, and decisions.   - Yes, jan, Windsor is still open for the public. It IS a lovely little town and worth the trip. Hampton Court is also really a cool place to visit -- this is where Henry VIII lived and held court. There are regular guided tours daily and gives one the total history of England in one place. Nearly 20,000 pounds of chocolate lost in Pa. fire

CANONSBURG, Pa. � An official says a fire at a candy factory in southwestern Pennsylvania destroyed nearly 20,000 pounds of chocolate.

The blaze broke out early Friday morning at a second-floor packaging area at Sarris Candies in Canonsburg in Washington County.

Plant manager Dennis Sroka tells The (Washington) Observer-Reporter (http://bit.ly/Axc2wa ) that a health inspection determined that Sarris must destroy the candy, which either melted or had smoke damage.

Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome says officials will inspect the damage Monday. He says the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Sroka says the inspection will also determine whether an additional 5,000 pounds of chocolate packaged for sale in the store will have to be destroyed.

But he says most of the company's stock survived because it is stored in an off-site warehouse.

shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to
feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand
gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a
dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and

A U.S. Navy Admiral
was attending a naval conference that included
Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French
Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large
group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a
French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many
languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that
we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than
speaking French?"

Without hesitating,
the American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the
Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't
have to speak German."

My oldest daughter got accepted to Tarleton State University. She wants to be a NNICU nurse to care for sick babies and thats the only school she wanted to go to.

Now we wait for word on scholarships and other financial aid. LOL

- Cathy, did your heart go into a-fib? If so, sometimes they can control it with medication or if it happens repeatedly, a cardiac ablation can be performed to stop it from coming back ( my brother had one done and it worked like a charm). - Cokie, it's been going in and out of a-fib for a few years now. They have been controlling it with meds, but that doesn't seem to be working as well anymore. Cardiac ablation? Is that where they stop the heart and restart it? That has been suggested. I'm not real crazy about that idea. They tried that once years ago and it didn't want to start again.   - I think you are talking about Cardioversion. They dont stop the heart they just ramp up the joules and shock the crap out of it to change the rythum. We have done it a few times in the ER.   - you may want to google the name of your med and adverse foods and see what pops up- that will give you a week to change your diet - many doctors (no offense doc) don't pay attention to things - for instance - a friend of mine has krones which can cause arthritic flare ups - never have they told her when it flares up- that nightshade foods (tomatoes potatos and egglplant) aggrivate it - but they do. Ground Hog Day - Punxsutawney Phil says six more weeks of winter. Have you even had a day of winter this year yet? Does this mean six more weeks of what we are "enjoying" now? - The weather in upstate NY has been amazing!! We have yet to have a large snowstorm. The temps have been above normal. We've had a few days of really cold weather but to have it in the 40's and 50's in Jan. and Feb is unheard of. My dogs are tracking in MUD! That's a spring thing!! I'm afraid we will get hit hard before the winter is over or have a terrible summer. But, I'll take the weather we are having now over below 0 temps and piles of snow!!! - We've had temps in the 60's here all week in eastern Kansas. We finally got rain here today, but it has been really dry here, only two small snow flurries all winter. My jonquils and tulips are about 6" out of the ground, about a month ahead of schedule. Compared to last winter when we had snow up to our knees all winter, this is heaven. - Temp this afternoon here in West Virginia is 55 degrees & sunny. Very above average, but I'm not complaining. Usually by now we have had snow after snow & bitter cold. So far we've had only one snow, which was a mere 2 inches & melted in a day. However we have had rain with temps dipping at night so black ice has been a problem in our mountainous counties during the mornings, which is scary for driving given our steep terrain. One of my staff in a mountainous county has had 2 accidents already this winter on black ice. Our ski resorts are not happy about the warm weather, but I love it!   - Same here, in Arlington, VA. We actually broke 72 Wednesday! I've got daffodil stalks about 1/3 of the way up, and crocus poking up too- and that started in January! A bit worrisome for the cherry blossoms in D.C., however- if the mild weather continues, it could mess things up for the Cherry Blossom Festival and tourism. Personally, *I'm* lovin' this weather! What works for you and do you have any tips/hints for others looking to start saving money w/coupons?

What's the best coupon deal you've ever gotten? How much have you saved in one trip? How much do you save on average? What do you do with the extra money?

- I've tried to coupon, didn't work. The coupons have you buy 2 or 3 of an item. To me that's not saving money, buying what you don't need. If you have a large family maybe you can make money.There was a show on Hoarders about people that coupon. Their houses were immaculate, but down in their basements they had rooms filled with stuff they bought with coupons just so they could say they didn't have to pay money for any of it.   - I know people who *do* coupon for charity. We have a home for pregnant girls here and this couple gets all sorts of great deals on personal care items that they give to the home. And I see no problem playing the coupon game, outsmarting the stores, if you give to charity. Why not? But if you're that good, then you need to get on the food bank payroll!   - Exactly, Maja - the things I need or like to buy rarely have coupons. I don't have room to store a lot of things, so I only like to buy what I need when I need it. I use a lot of store brand items, too, which are cheaper at regular price than the name brand on coupon. Plus, there's never coupons for milk, bread, meats, produce or staples like flour and sugar. - When I'm stateside, every now and then, I find coupons that actually makes sense to my purchase needs for that month -- for example, if there is $2.00 off a purchase of 2 6-pack rolls of toilet paper that is from a competetively-priced brand, then I will go for it. When I was little, every Christmas was magical, even though by today's standards, they were very modest. I got lovely presents from Father Christmas. I believe I saw him once, riding across the sky with the moon in the background. But I'm not really sure. Rumour had it that one of my sisters DID see him, so it must be so.

There were a lot of adults in my house as my 7 siblings ranged in age from 24 - 7 1/2 when I was born. But as Father Christmas only brought presents for the children, I was pretty much it. I didn't go to midnight mass with the others until I was around 10. Instead, I went to mass in the morning, and was always very excited to see the nativity scene finally revealed on Christmas Day. I loved looking into the cosy cave, with shepherds in the background. And of course, there would be the baby Jesus snuggled in the hay.

Then came a very sad Christmas when I was 12. My mother had died at the end of October, too close to Christmas for any celebrating. But we did manage to find some things funny. There were four of us still living at home, as well as my father who was by this time, semi-invalid. My 22 yr old sister would forget every week to buy a roast for Sunday dinner, and we'd end up sharing a can of stewed steak. When Christmas came around, she swore she would remember to buy a roast, but alas, she forgot again. So on Christmas day, we had a can of stewed steak (a misnomer if ever there was one), with mashed potatoes and peas and carrots. We all thought it was very funny.

Later that night, my sad Father went to bed, my sister went out with her then boyfriend, (now husband for 53 yrs)and my two brothers, ages 26 and 20, stayed home for my sake and shared a surruptitious can of beer (alcohol was not allowed in our house), while the three of us watched High Noon on the tv. The tv had been rented when my mother was ill, so it was a big deal to a tv in the house. For some reason, this Christmas didn't seem as Dickensian as it now appears. It's something I look back on with nostalgia tinged with sadness. I miss my family so much at this time of year, even now at the age of 64.

Regardless of how much money and material things we have, it's always the people we love who create precious memories, and who make life worthwhile. Christmas, Channukah, Diwali, Ramadan, or any time of the year, hold on closely to your loved ones, and appreciate them always.

My youngest just taped another audition for a Disney half hour pilot. This is her third one in a month. There is something about her they like cause they select her to audition so maybe this third one is the charm. LOL

The next person is only allowed to continue rolling the dice when the present is unwrapped and has been admired. Takes hours, but it�s so much fun! I received the following forwarded email from a friend who works at Sabre - thought I'd pass it on if anyone considers this a worth while goal and would like to vote.

Hi Friends,

As many of you know, for the past 14 years, I have volunteered with the Make-A-Wish foundation. I�ve had the honor and privilege of meeting some of the bravest little warriors in the world. Some have been cancer free for 13+ years, some are still battling, some are angels and no longer fighting this dreadful disease. About 2 years ago, one of the little warriors, Vinny�s Mom asked me to join her in a foundation to support kids with cancer. I am now on the board for Kids of Childhood Cancer Foundation, we are a 501c3 and work with the kids at our local hospital, assisting the families financially by helping with bills, providing meals and snacks to the families on the ward, holding parties on the ward, and adopting the families at Christmas time. Our ultimate goal is to have a beach house on the NC coast � a safe haven for the kids and families to escape the harsh realities of the cancer world, even if just for a few days.

This month � that long term goal seems more within reach. I submitted an idea to Pepsi Refresh project, for 50K towards our dream. We were selected, and are currently #4 in the 50K level � from ideas submitted all over the country. If we can remain in the top 10 on 11/30 � we will get that 50K � and have a down payment to start looking for our haven for the kids. We are thrilled to have this opportunity � but it�s very competitive � people do it every month and form alliances and know how to play the game. We know being #4 now doesn�t mean we are in. So, I�m asking if you could help by voting, and sharing with your friends. You can vote 1 of 3 ways (or all 3).

I often see the word not in the good ORTH :

it's ' cam*a*raderie ' and not the other one ' camraderie '
' camaraderie '

but I think to understand why it is often forgotten... in english with the ' a ' ....

of course letters in french compared to english haven't the same sound.

wait a second... I'm in my Robert & Collins :

I'm in the ' french/english '

' camarade ' in english can be translated in : ' comrade ' but ATTENTION here it's where we're in a * political * situation

- that's one thing that is pretty standard in US english - most authors know to use fiance and fiancee - what drives me nuts is blond and blonde - only half the editors in NY seem to know blond is a man and blonde is a woman - sigh - I kept telling a friend of mine that for years - when Berkley published her first book her editor came in and said the same thing - I thoroughly enjoyed sticking my tongue out and saying TOLD YA!!!
