• Hi! I was suppose to have lunch today with another good Harmyboard, Jenks. We are not meeting because she has a horrific neck spasm. She's had it all week and has been to the DR.     • oh heaves - that's what happened to me - I wrenched the crud out of my right sxhoulder in an accident when I was pregnant - suffered blinding headaches for so long and finaly a neurologist put me in a cervical collar - the hard ones and slowy everything changed - the tohther thing - was I had to swim daily without putting my head in the water - turning my head side to side.   • Well, it's been two weeks today and I'm still not up to snuff. They said it was a slow road with a muscle this big. I'm trying to cut pain pills in half because they knock me on my six.   Today, we received an invitation to our nephew's wedding in October. A very close friend's daughter is getting married the same day, but I have chosen to gomtomthe family wedding, even though I would have more fun at the friend's wedding. My question is this: should I approach my sister-in-law regarding the fact that the invitation came addresses to, Dale, Barbara, Andy, and Kevin! Considering that my two sons are adults and are both engaged to be married?
  
  I am so upset about this. My mom was adamant about teaching my sister and me the proper way to address invitations, whether they were graduation party invitations or our wedding invitations. I told my husband the he needs to call and talk to his brother. I am done with this side of the family. If their fiance's are not invited, I will go to my friend's wedding. I need your opinions, please.

  • Martian Barb, are the weddings anywhere near each other? Perhaps your 'crew' could go to one wedding and one reception -- the one that would be the most fun.......?   • I think carramor's suggestion is great if you can swing it. How does your husband feel about this since it's side of the family? Would he rather go to his nephew's wedding or your friends? Is your friend also friends with your husband? Maybe you could go to your friends wedding and the rest of your family attend the family wedding? Your sons definetly should have received their own invitations, especially since they are engaged. I would let your BIL know that your sons are bring their intendeds!! • Hello all yall! Seems like I've been off the board for a yr instead of two mos. Thanks again for all the good thoughts/prayers for my journey --move was interesting! My very kind neighbor helped in getting U-Haul packed out -- I dragged boxes and stuff to the garage door and he 'packed' the trailer! So, this 65+ gray-haired harmy and the packed van took to the road. Other driver's were quite polite -- guess I must have looked pretty pittiful. There was quite a bit of road construction and repairs and traffic was not fun. The normal 2 hr trip took almost 4.5 hrs. -- Inside. -- carramor, 10:40:50 08/15/12 Wed [7]
  Here I go getting wordy. Arrived at my temporary home around 10:30 pm absoutely wipped out. Ran into real life with its twists and turns in the next several weeks. Took longer to find an apartment than I had planned, but I'm in a 2 bdrm with what seems to be about 750 boxes! Accused the mover of stopping along the way and picking up other peoples' stuff. Was beginning to think it would be necessary to add on another room, LOL! Had to wait a week for phone, cable and internet -- and now, here I am, trying to catch up with the rest of world....think it's gonna take some time!

• London 2012! Well, I've been to beach volley ball, archery, showjumping, cycling, and swimming which brought me to a few of the venues -- inside -- mj, 00:59:49 08/09/12 Thu [6]
  The Horse Guards Parade, Greenwich Park, Lord's Cricket Grounds, Olympic Aquatic Center, and of course, the Surrey roads. I must say, it's been SO well-organized and attended. The way the games have been distributed throughout the city of London and the environment around has enabled people to get a beautiful overview of this fantastic city and this part of England. I can't believe how the weather has 'cooperated', too! I'm so happy that TeamGB has been having their fair share of golds. The only 'celeb' we've seen up close has been David Walliams (from Little Britain) and we spoke Dutch right next to him saying that he was taller and chubbier than we thought and THEN we find out his wife, who was with him, was Dutch! Whoops!! Goes to show -- you NEVER know -- haha!
  The most fun was the beach volleyball. The archery was boring, but interesting, Showjumping was riveting, and swimming was exciting but we had bad seats so we saw all the action on the big screens. The atmosphere here is wonderful -- everyone in town are amazingly friendly and calm. There are SO many volunteers on the streets who are incredibly helpful! Public transport has been AMAZING! The very small glitches that have occured have truly been minor and the whole debacle about security has been completely forgotten! All in all -- I'm VERY impressed and can't imagine anywhere else that this smooth spectacular Olympics could be run better. We're trying to get more tickets. I'll keep you posted!   • Oh I wish I were in London! It is my favourite city. When I'm there, I never want to leave and I'm jealous of the people who do live there. I literally skip with excitement and joy when I'm walking down the Mall or around Westminster. My niece used to live in my fave area of Chelsea, not far from Sloan Square.     • What was so cool about the Olympics here was that in the ticket packet was included travel cards enabling free tube,train, bus travel throughout the city to all the venues! On the way back from Greenich Park, we decided for a bit of adventure and took a boat back to Westminster and even THAT was only 1/2 price! The boat along the Thames was magical! I took lots of pics and what was best of all, this young guy who happened to be a 6th generation of the Order of Watermen gave a HILARIOUS commentary of all the sites as we sailed from A to B.   • Long ago I worked for Holland America. Back then the engineers were mostly dutch. I was in an elevator with a woman chatting in english. Two officers were chatting in dutch. Then the woman turned & let them have it in dutch. The 2 men blanched. When I asked her what did you say she said she told them never assume people around you won't understand your language. She lived in england but was dutch. I asked her what did they say that ticked you off & all she would say is 'you don't want to know' - shrug.   Mid June a former client of mine invited my daughter, last minute, to fly home with her to Germany and visit for a month. I sent her.
  
  Her bosses said I was crazy she could be sold off in the white slavery market - My daughter and I laughed it off. I traveled in Europe after college and thought it a great opportunity.
  
  Well, she's home. She spent a week in Frankfurt with my client/friend, then a day in Linz Austria, then a week in Serbia, then a week in Corfu Greece, then a week on the German coast and finally back to Frankfurt.
  
  On top of that the woman likes to shop so my daughter came home with new dresses, handbags, and shoes all made in France or Italy.
  
  I am so thankful for this wonderful opportunity - but it made me think of a couple of things -
  
  1. are more things in Europe NOT made in China the way so much IS here?
  
  2. Am I really such an odd parent that i didn't think twice about sending my child (who by the way is 21years old and going into her senior year of college) off to experience Europe?

  • 1. IMO, most goods are made in countries they are sold or from other countries of the EU -- not so much from China -- so far! BUT, clothes, furniture, and probably everything IS still oe expensive than in the US -- but much less of a difference now than, say, 27 years ago. And my daughter is an extremely attractive person for both her looks (blonde and blue eyed) as well as her friendly personality.   • No, chris k, I don't think you're an odd parent. When I was just 20, my parents let me go to Europe for three months on a bicycle tour of seven countries. There were a group of 11 of us who met in New York City. Until then, I didn't know anyone with whom I was going to be traveling. We stayed in youth hostels and had the time of our lives.   • Actually, we get lots of stuff from China - or Taiwan, that is. Lots of the cheaper clothing is made in Bangladesh. It´s getting worse. You can still find more or less locally produced stuff (or at least EU-produced), but it´s often more expensive. I don´t know how much it is in relation to the US/China market, though. As for travelling- I firmly believe there comes a time when everyone should (if at all possible) leave home for a bit and travel-at 21 she´s old enough to vote, get married and have children, so she´s old enough to travel.     • It seems like absolutely everything you buy is made in China. I'm thinking 70% china, 20% a combination of places like Mexico or Sri Lanka where labor is cheap and 10% USA - that's guessing.   • I don't know about today, but 30 years ago my niece MaryJane, backpacked through Europe. She was in her second year of college. She and 2 other girls thought this would be a great idea. They had a wonderful time and experience. She was Blonde and blue eyed. They stayed at youth hostels and sometimes camped out. She said she would let her girls do it. He oldest daughter just finished college, but she is forever taking the train to NYC and staying with friends there. I think I would find NYC more dangerous than Europe.     • i did europe thirty years ago - and to think the only communication my mother had from me for the most part was post cards- many of which arrived after I did!! lol.   • Europeans and Brits consider 21 to be an adult not a child. Of course you are not crazy. What a great experience for your daughter. I think that you are a good parent for not instilling unnecessary fear in her and instead, instilling self confidence and the freedom to grow and mature. I emmigrated to Canada by myself when I was 18, and although I stayed with a married sister, I had to find a job and be independent.   • I was 16 when my parents sent my sister (she was 17) off on our first unaccompanied European trip. To this day, we still talk about that trip and what a great learning experience it was for us.   A dear friend of a lot of us and one of the founding members of the HarmyBoard, Lauri, has died from breast cancer. Click here for her obituary
  
  
  
  Lauri was around at the beginning of the HB and many of us met her at the fanfests. She was such a lovely lady and a good friend who I lost touch with. I've stayed at her house and met her lovely family including her identical twin, Lori.
  
  She was a bit shy on the board but she really LOVED Harm and was so much fun in chat.
  
  I know a lot of you remember her too and have fond memories too. I just can't believe it...

  • I am so shocked and sad that Lauri died. She was such a DJE fan and an absolute sweetheart. In those early days of the HB, and before that at Maeve's, we'd chat every night and Lauri was always there. We had a fab time at fanfest. She had a wry sense of humour.       • I agree. Why do anything unless it is to make a statement of some kind? Tats aren't bad manners, even the ones that offend others. They're a personal choice, but you make your choices and you ask for reactions you're going to get them on both sides. What bothers me is that people expand the display of a tattoo to mean all sorts of things that don't pertain. Like bad parenting, heartlessness, uncleanliness, or violence.         • We take greater care to legally protect our property, companies, real estate, etc. than we do our children.   My second grandson was born Friday - 8 lbs 15 oz! However he is still in the hospital with low pulse oxygen and so far they have not discovered the reason. (every test has come back normal) My daughter, her husband and older sister Emma are very upset. I know this is a great family of believers so if you can please add one more to your prayers, say a prayer for Aiden Michael and his doctors. Thanks.

  Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts for the past week. Aiden is finally home with his mom, dad and big sister Emma (who's glad she can finally 'touch' her brother). Just one more request, a short well wish for Aiden's mom (my daughter) I know now that she's got him home she's thinking "now what?" it's been seven long years since she had a baby in the house!

  He's is off the oxygen and all IVs, is eating well and is gaining weight. He has to go 48 hours without setting off any alarms (he's still being monitored) and he can come home! Still haven't discovered what caused the problems, all test are normal. Emma (big sister) is exciting about her baby brother coming home but still contends she will not change a dirty diaper! (According to her that's dad's job)
  
  Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. It's been a comfort to know I have friends world wide that will take a moment out of their day and help a friend in need.

• Aiden Michael update - he was moved from the local hospital to Children's Hospital in Mobile, AL (about a 30 minute drive from home). His parents are concerned as we all are because the doctors have not discovered why his pulse oxygen levels won't stabilize. -- usmgrad, 12:29:56 06/26/12 Tue [8]
  Aiden Michael was NOT happy about the move - cried all the way to the delight of his parents, he seemed too lethargic (quiet) while at the local hospital. Then upon check in he was put on a drip instead of being feed, he did not like that at all and let every one know he was unhappy.
  
  Aiden's parents are very pleased with what they have seen at the hospital so far. They are there now while I baby sit the other grandkids(Aiden's sister and two cousins). Hope to get an update late this afternoon

  • Tough Question. I started going to Viewings and Funerals when I was 8 yrs. old. But, my 3 brothers and I were raised very strictly. Catholic school, the whole bit. I never had a problem with it nor did 2 of my brothers. My oldest brother had a very hard time with it and to this day advoids them at all cost and has raised his children the same way. I don't think that is healthy either. I guess it would depend on the child, but I don't think a child needs to be exposed to a funeral or a viewing before 10. IMHO! They also attended the memorial service of one of their classmates father. That event was actually at a rec center since he was a huge soccer player/fan.   • Modern times are much different than things were for centuries prior. There weren't funeral homes, per se, so bodies/caskets were laid out at home and funerals were a part of life - people died earlier, children often, and it was part of life. Now we try to shield the little ones from it. Depending on your religion, death is not a thing to be feared, as many feel it is the door to the afterlife/heaven, etc. With a strong foundation, children can handle it, I believe.   • I took my kids to the after dinner for the family but not to the funeral. My youngest was 6 when she went to her first funeral only because it it was supposed to be a closed casket. Until, right in the middle of the service they opened the casket. I grabbed her, covered her eyes, hubby covered her sisters eyes and my oldest looked away as we hurried out. That was the last funeral we have attended as a family like that. I would rather my kids remember the one they love alive and smiling and not some macabre waxy figure in a box.   Since the end of summer 2011, we finally have new neigbours ! The others one having quit the town to go I don't remember where, the good thing being we don't see them anymore.
  We don't see them often, the one we see the most is the mother who's a very kind person. They also have pets : a dog and cats. And they feed them.
  The peacefulness is back. We sleep better, etc...
  Sometimes with the lady when she or us are upstairs and the other(s) is/are in the garden, we discuss.
  They're known to be people who like to party, they did one a few months ago, but it was ok, it wasn't like the other ones ( ... ).
  I feel better, because I was at a point I was always on my guards waiting the next ' bomb ' that they ( the previous ones ) would drop and this, day and night.

  • Glad everything worked out!! I now have neighbors who are very young and party every weekend. It's very annoying. But, luckily we live in the country and there is quite a distants between us. • Off to Washington DC today with my 7 year old granddaughter (her first airplane trip). Going to visit #2 daughter and her family. The reason for the trip? Saturday, we (my 2 grandaughters, daughter and I) will be with 200,000 other Girl Scouts as we Rock the Mall in celebration of Girl Scoutings 100th anniversary. Look for us on the NEWS, I'll be the one wearing the white t shirt, singing and dancing with my granddaughters and having a great time!
