• East Coast Earthquake... -- Martian Barb, 05:49:01 08/24/11 Wed [14]
  Did anyone feel it yesterday. I went in to work early and it happened just after I started to work. We were pretty busy and I was running around and never felt it. My clinical supervisor was in the bathroom with it hit. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed that I didn't feel it! Buildings in downtown Pittsburgh were evacuated while they checked for structural damage. My hospital is about 45 miles north of Pittsburgh and our maintenance department was also checking for cracks. Today, engineers are checking all of the bridges in and around Pgh. and we have over 450 bridges.
  
  My cousin who lives in So. Cal. said that the reason it was felt in so many stated is because we donot have as many small fault lines as they do in Cal.

  • I live about a 90 min drive from the epicenter. I was at Target, and stood there in awe feeling it rumble my feet, watching things swing on racks, hearing the low rumble. I knew it wouldn't be a big emergency. If that's the biggest East Coast earth quake in decaces, then we're all good. It was only 0.1 magnitude below the Loma Prieta quake that leveled San Francisco during the World Series in '89. What a differenece geology makes!!   Hey Araninda, when will you be in Nashville? Wasn't it this month? We should totally have a Harmy gathering! I've spoken to Colie and she thinks it's a great idea as well! We've been really busy getting our daughters registered and ready for school in a new state, but they should be settled by then. Colie did say that our place is too small to host the whole party, but there are far more interesting places to host it here! And heck if anyone likes to swim we do have two pools at our place if it gets too warm! Let me know....

  The other day I was selling on a flea market selling vintage & old buttons.
  
  Came a woman with her mother who seem to come from an wealthy milieu. The woman seems to have around the thirties or in the thirties...
  
  The woman looked the buttons, asked the prices...
  
  " oh it's expensive, I usually don't buy ( old vintage ) buttons at that price "
  
  I explained to the young lady ( " lady " if we want )than the prices are correct. ( it's where I understand she doesn't have knowledge of the prices )
  
  she continues to complain , I nicely answered her than the prices are correct
  
  she continues in telling me " oh, it's for doing stuff ( understand of course jewels ) "
  I thought ' what does she think ? than I'm not on page of what is passing around me ? and if so, than I don't read magazines and have internet ? '
  ( I kept to myself to tell her than I knew website likes ' etsy ' or for the french version ' a little market ' )
  
  then came the moment where her eyes catched a bag fulled of other beautiful buttons ( curved jet, beautiful brass and metal buttons,cut steel etc... ) the problems w/them being all damaged... having seen on american site than some people where looking for theses kind of buttons I did a small bag of them for 5 E.
  
  " can - you lower the price ? they are all damaged "
  
  I explained her the WHY it's at this price and than IF there weren't damaged they wouldn't be in a bag like that
  still with all my calm and patience and thinking more and more ' it's clear than I'm speaking with an idiot '
  she continues, continues
  
  Usually in bad situations I keep my calm, BUT HERE, I found myself to repeat the woman WHY that price I didn't yell or other but my tone of voice seemed to have to change because she told me that isn't necessary to speak like that.
  
  I answered her " I don't cease since the beginning to tell you than if these buttons weren't broken they wouldn't be at that price I'm a honest person, you know how to read ( ?) there 's the paper inside with written on it " damaged buttons " 5E ""
  
  she continues to complain, then go away.
  
  then at the end of the FM, when we were putting back our stuff in the car, she came back with 5 E
  
  you know what as soon as I've the 5E I regretted to have them to have sold these buttons to this stupid woman.

• Lost another furry baby. -- TF, 09:34:23 08/01/11 Mon [17]
  Our sweet Lila girl passed away this morning at 5:30. It was so hard. My oldest daughter and I took turns staying with her so she wouldnt be alone. She was the sweetest dog and will be missed by all of my family. Thank you all for the good thoughts.

  • I know how you feel - it's just awful losing a pet - it's hard for folks to understand you can love your pets as much as your children - and since I have both I know it's true. I know it's hard to think of but I strongly encourage you to consider adopting a new pet - it helps ease the hurt and although you can never replace the loved pet - it does a heart good to share love with a pet that needs you and might have otherwise been put to sleep.     • We have 2 other dogs and a cat. I think we are covered in the loving pet department. I feel bad for getting the kids hopes up since I had ordered that holistic medicine and we really thought it was helping. She just refused to drink anything and I tried so hard to syringe feed her enough fluids. I really believe it was her time.       • I've been through this heartbreak so many times and it never gets easier. You lost a member of the family and it hurts deeply. I've learned to sense when I need to go to the vet because nothing is working and it is only going downhill. Even my kids ask me, "Is it time, Mom?"           • You did the right thing, IMHO. One night very late, my Irish Setter became very ill. I put her on a puffed quilt, lay down beside her and told her it was okay to go to sleep.     • ITA! They have nice 'basic' things, in solid colors that will allow your daughters to make their rooms their own, when they arrive. It might help them transition if they have a small role in how the rooms are finished. I like the Craigs list and flea market ideas too.       • It was torture to have them away from me, but we survived it. We decorated to the nines but gave them room to fill in the more flashy spaces. Cynthia now has bright blue LED lights around her room (which I allowed because they don't get hot at all), and a disco ball, and Anna chose a ballet wall picture and a some frilly accessories.   • I know I'm not American, but I've an idea ( it's what we do in my family ) : flea - markets, second hand dealer, auctions and even waste collection center, friends who don't want anymore their stuff, in my country we also have Emmaüs... many places, where we can have stuff at a lower and even a very lower price or even for nothing.Or if you prefer to go to shops I was ready to tell you ' Habitat ' or ' Roche Bobois ' but I'm not sure if you've them in your country or for a cheaper price ' Ikea'.   • My middle daughter picked gree,purple and blue as her colors fro her room then deiced the theme would be peace signs and butterflies. We found a ton of stuff like large stick on butterflies at Dollar General. The have cute baskets and waste baskets, stuff for her desk in all the colors we were looking for. Also found curtains. • My oldest son leaves for Basic Training at 0800 Monday. -- The Chief, 22:06:53 07/24/11 Sun [11]
  
  Well, the day has finally arrived - my oldest son, Matt, is leaving for Army Basic Training in the morning. We're all going down as a family to drop him off at the Armory. He's joined the VA National Guard.
  
  His Basic is 9 weeks at Ft. Benning, GA - in August & September. *whew* It's going to be so hot. As a mom, that's the one thing I'm most worried about, but his recruiter and local drill sergeant have assured me that they are very careful with heat now-days.
  
  If you feel like saying a prayer for him, it would be appreciated. And for the rest of us, too, as we adjust to his absence.
  
  After Basic, he will go straight to the Army School of Music in Norfolk for his Advanced training, and he'll have most nights and weekends free, so it will be much easier for us to visit and contact him. We may even get to have him home for Thanksgiving. He'll finish that in Mid-December.
  
  I know we have some military folks and families on here, so it's nice to know we're joining ranks with such great people. Any advice is welcome.

• Doggie woes -- TF, 17:01:18 07/25/11 Mon [11]
  Our 10 year old Border Collie/Sheltie mix, Lila was diagnosed today as having Acute Chronic Renal Failure.
  Her blood work was horrible and now I know why she has been losing weight and feeling bad. We opted for a special diet, some phosphate binding medication an antibiotic and time.
  The vet said if she were a human she would be on dialysis but they dont do that with dogs especially her age.
  Hopefully if we can get her BUN and Creatinine levels down she will be good to go with some close monitoring.
  She is a backyard dog and pretty much a mutt but she is part of our family as was her old friend Oscar who was with us for almost 17 years. Anyone have experience with renal failure in a dog?

  • My dog got into some Truvia sweetener that one of the kids had left out where she could find it. It caused her to have kidney issues, including high creatinine levels. She's been on a special diet for the past couple of years and is doing fine. One thing - the kidney diet dog food is really expensive, probably double the price of normal good dog food. And there aren't a lot of different varieties. We went through all 3 brands before we found one she liked and that didn't leave her ravenously hungry. Good luck to you and your dog.   • Thanks ya'll. From what I have read online Cats have abetter prognosis for some reason. So far Lila really likes the Science Diet K/D food. My vet is so wonderful and he said they have reformulated it so that it doesnt taste as bad as it used to. We also got the canned type so it will make her more thirsty? I'm praying she gets better for my kids sake as we just had Oscar put down last year and my babies have grown up with these dogs.   • You ought to consider a pet fountain if you don't already have one. It gives them a source of cool, fresh water that they will be more likely to drink than a bowl of room temperature, still water. • Life is throwing lemons again -- TF, 15:59:21 07/20/11 Wed [9]
  My 13 year old was diagnosed with scoliosis last month. I noticed it while she was trying on her first 2 piece swimsuit.
  She went last week and they did a plaster cast of her upper body. It was sent to Florida to be made into a specialed brace that she will have to wear 23 hrs a day for about 2 years. They will have to redesign and remake a new everytime she grows more than 2 inches or so. At 5'4 now she apparently, according to her growth markers, has 6-8 inches left to grow.
  She seems okay with it right now but she isnt in the brace yet so I pray she adjusts to it quickly. I personally cant imagine trying to sleep in something so uncomfortable and restricting.
  Most school nurses check at 5th and 8th grades but it can happen quickly in between and can be caught ahead of time.
  
  Anyone have experience with Scoliosis to share?

  • I worked as a medical assistant, years ago, with a pediatric ortho surgeon. I remember that we really got busy after the normal screening times at school. You've cought it early enough, so that it might not interfere too much, when her social life really picks up, in high school. I know its can be tough, but it makes all the difference in the world, once shes out of the brace. Many of the parents threw "Out of the Brace" parties.(We got pictures, lol) Its sounds lilke your girl has a good attitude going and that helps alot.   We now have a new member of the family. Today we adopted a much smaller German Shepherd.
  
  Though he has very big paws to fill - our Rabb lived up to his namesake in more ways than just being tall dark and handsome, (he was a 110 lb german shepherd)- he already seems to working on living up to his new name - GUNNY !
  
  Our new boy is a two year old rescued from a shelter. He seems very sweet so far. He's all skin and bones but I'm sure soon he'll be strong little Marine!!

  • The drive was fun with my sister! Though a little cramped for her as she's taller than I am. We went through 9 states in three days. It took us until Nebraska to find a state that didn't look like it was part of Oregon or Washington. I got here safely on the 3rd and have loved it since!   Chris K's beloved and beautiful German Shepherd dog, "Rabb", passed away this weekend. Rabb was a sweetie with big paws and an even bigger heart. Loving and affectionate, he was the mascot for the Texas Tarts and the annual Texas Jagfest. He will be greatly missed.

  • thanks everyone - it's been hard as hell - We adopted Rabb six years ago at the age of 2. he was large for a german shepherd and the first time my mother said he was tall, dark and handsome, we knew we had to name him Rabb. While German Shepherds in general are a great breed, our Rabb lived up to his name, very sweet and special and loyal and smart. Unfortunately we didn't know he had a heart problem so though he appeared perfectly healthy friday night - saturday morning his heart simply couldn't pump any more.       • Our German Shepherd lived to be 10 yrs. old and the hip displacia resulted in his loss. We also had a wolf shepherd mix and the same thing happened, but neither one had heart problems.
