we have had two winter weeks so far this season - this last one has given us five days of at or below 32 degrees - We lost a full grown multi trunk Oak the first night- Because the leaves had fallen off yet the tree couldn't handle the weight of the ice on the leaves and the thing upended from the roots -

yesterday every football game on TV was playing in snow

I thought we were supposed to be facing global warming?

- Well, it's freezing in the North country of NYS and the winds have been adding to the low temps. There's some small amounts of snow on the ground and yesterday I heard the coldest temperature ever read in Antactica was recorded SO where is the global warming because it sure isn't at my house. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade -- The Chief, 22:11:23 11/25/13 Mon [13]

I'm sure many of you watch the parade, but I gotta brag on one of my kids: My oldest is marching in the parade with the James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes! They will be the FIRST band AND the First ACT. They will be in front - right behind the turkey, and perform first at Herald Square!

So TUNE IN to NBC at 9am Eastern for the Parade kick-off and 10am Eastern for the Herald Square performance. In the meantime, here's a taste of the music you'll be hearing from the LARGEST collegiate marching band in the nation!!

WOW, What a busy time of year. I am in the process of making dresses for my daughters end of year production. 5 down, 5 to go. Lucky they only take about an hour each to make, because I need them all done by this Wednesday! We have been so busy that all I have managed to do with the room is to strip the wallpaper. - Not too much from here. We are enjoying the relaxed pace of retirement, and are working on weeding out stuff from years of family life. - I swore off diets in 2005 when I joined Weight Watchers. It isn't a diet. It's all about portion control and setting up new habits. I lost 42 lbs. I go to weigh-ins every week, because the meeting are fun, and great support. Plus, I can keep track on creeping lbs. It's been 7 yrs since I got to my goal, and I have kept the weight OFF!!! Yay me. That beats all the odds with any diet plan, which are always too difficult to maintan for the rest of your life. On WW, I can eat anything I want.....just not the whole table. Along the lines of the previous post. I have decided to redecorate my daughters bedroom. I thought, just take of the frieze in the middle of the wall and repaint and all will be good. We'll get through it in a weekend. In the meantime the girls can sleep in my room. WRONG!!! Because of course it ended up with all the wallpaper needing stripping, the walls needing sanding and repreped. But I really need to get it done soon because 3 weeks of sharing is a wee bit too much. - oh dear- I'm not even sure what frieze is! - and I tend to be the lazy sort who paints over wallpaper because it's such a nuisance to take down and then here in texas you have to retexture - not something I want to do - whenever I've redone my daughters room we just paint over what's already there (NT) -- chris k - who was extremely happy to see the pepto bismol pink go, 06:09:03 11/09/13 Sat
- Oh horrible job! If the wallpaper is not really old, it's pretty easy to strip. The top layer usually just strips off. Then I go over the bottom layer with a wet sponge, leave it to soak a bit, then get a get a 6" stripping spatula, and it comes off easily. The wet paper is sticky and messy, but nothing a big garbage bag can't handle. If the top layer won't strip, try using the wet sponge on it and leaving for a short time (not enough to let it dry.) If it's really difficult, you can rent a steamer.(inside.) -- Cece, 17:06:33 11/09/13 Sat
  - Thankfully my best friends have just renovated and invested in a steamer, so that is at our house for the forseable future. I'm Ok with filling and sanding, didn't think about the wet sponge to take off the glue layer though. Particularly because I don't want to oversteam. Figured that I better finish inside! My dear friend, Ginger is the one in the video. She is a dancer, also a nurse, who is now 2 years cancer free. This center treated my mom, but unfortunately, she passed away almost 7 years ago from metastatic colon cancer. So, ladies get the girls squished this month (have a mammogram!) and get your colonoscopy done. They both can save your life. Thanks for voting everyday!

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I have been here. I am asking a request that everyone go yo the pinkglove.com website and vote for the UPMC Cancer Center's Pink Glove Dance. My very dear friend, Ginger, is now almost 2 years cancer free! She is a lovely person and is featured in this dance. The winning hospital gets a very generous donation to the Cancer Center. This cancer center is very special to me personally because this is where my mom received her chemo 8 years ago. UPMC is part of huge University of Pittsburgh and has a world renowned cancer program. All you have to do is register. You can vote everyday. Come on girls, if we can get DJE to grist place in the polls, we can do this for Ginger.

it has been years since I've gone to a concert- but last night went with three friends to see earth wind and fire-

had so much fun

a couple of weeks ago I went with my hubby to hear a cover band that played Steely Dan - they sounded exactly like them and I thoroughly enjoyed myself then too.

it made me wonder - is it worth the extra money to go see the real thing?

Do any of you go to concerts still? To smaller clubs with cover bands?

- I love live music, too! I've been to about 5 arena concerts in the last 5 years, and it is always a blast! But I love smaller venues too. Can't always afford it tho. One of my favorite groups is the jazz band from my kids' high school. They are awesome! (NT) -- The Chief, 16:57:32 10/09/13 Wed

- I like both bands and it's always great to see the real deal. However, if the real deal is very old, they often lose their sound, so it might just be fun to experience them in a trip down memory lane. I loved Steely Dan, but as you know, Becker and Fagin always used different studio bands, so in a way, it doesn't matter too much.   - Yes, even the best of singers can *lose* their voices with age. Unfortunately, my voice at 39 is not nearly as good as it was at 25. :-( Part of that is lack of practice and part is due to polycystic ovary syndrome, but I digress. It is always interesting to me how a singer can sound so much like another singer. Case in point, the new, young Filipino lead singer for Journey sounds *so much* like Steve Perry it is uncanny. Has been a shaky day here today. Multiple earthquakes since 7 this morning. Is now almost midnight and have just had another 3. Hopefully they will only be light overnight. I am at work in the morning, but will get back as soon as possible and let you know what is happening. - Well, the country seems to have settled down. mj, I think it is a mixture of better media coverage, but certainly more incidents as well. I have lived in NZ for 20 years and while there have always been quakes, I think the ones that have happened over the past 3 years have definitely been stronger and closer to the surface. We have had a few aftershocks, but nothing like the one that happened on Sunday (my time).   - Our lifespans are not even on the geologic spans. Read up on plate techtonics. The plates are constantly moving and earthquakes happen all the time as a result. Most are under the sea or in unpopulated areas. When they happen where there are people, only a small tremour can cause damage and death. I live in Vancouver, part of the Pacific ring off fire. We are always waiting for the "Big One." I'd love to visit Pompeii, site of the massive erruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD (?).     - Cece, after the Canterbury quakes a couple of years ago, I think it has just made people more aware. My daughter and I would love to visit Pompeii as well (it's on the bucket list).       - We just watched a movie called Pompeii, with information from Pliny the yonger. What a terrifying force. I remember when Mt St. Helen's erupted. We could hear the explosion right up here in BC. If the area had a city at its base, it would have been even mrore disasterous. I am fascinated by geology, though I only have a couple of courses (my sci. requirement.) My DH majored in geology, so I've learnt a lot from him. I'm hardly an expert though. Just letting everyone know that I am back. Paris was wonderful, though not long enough and I would have loved the opportunity to see more of France. What are some of your best household tips? Tips for cleaning, organizing, and generally making life simpler, or more resourceful.

Here are two from me:
1) when you're really feeling cold in bed, lay a fleece blanket UNDER you. It holds in the warmth from your body and allows it to wrap back around you.
2) to get lotion on that unreachable part of your back that itches like crazy when the skin is dry, squirt some lotion on the back side of a back-scratcher and swipe it on.
