Subject: I have an iPad . . .

. . .rather I have a school district owned iPad. The purpose? I'm trying to figure that one out. Short answer, I am tasked with identifing possible uses of an iPad in the classroom, in a school library, and in my office (district finance office). Any ideas? Our technology department is all for them and currently all our administrators have one. Of course now the teachers all want one. Is there a practical educational use for them or are they mostly (at school ages) used for games and networking (ie facebook)?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Either here or by email.

[> See if there's a way they can be interfaced with some sort of group. Teachers can share ideas, students can work on projects, etc. For file-sharing, try "Dropbox" (first 2Megs are free). Also, if your school has Smart Boards, there might be a classroom interface with those. -- The Chief (our kids use so much technology, they have a special night devoted to showing parents how each class/subject uses the technology - but no iPads yet), 21:07:39 10/20/11 Thu [1]

[> I was gien an I Pad as a gift from work. It was part of the Service Awards Night at my hospital. I love it. But I am still trying to figure it all out. I am getting the calendar down, and now have to put my contact list in. Inside -- Martian Barb, 16:35:36 10/21/11 Fri [1]

I would like to use it for my continuing education, but haven't figured it out yet. I agree, there must be a way to connect with other teachers. Good luck with exploring it's many uses.

[> As a retired teacher of 34+ years, I know there is value in all the new technology, BUT I am very concerned about the use of many of these at the elementary level. The basics are the basics and in some cases, they are throwing them aside for the introduction of these handheld devices. I remember when our district spent oodles of money on reading machines only to have them stored a few years later in a dust collecting stoage room. Technology changes every single day and schools are becoming more and more limited on funds. -- jenks, 05:59:32 10/22/11 Sat [1]

[> [> I agree! That.s one reason my boss (the CFO) wants me (a non tech) person to play with it. She can't see many practical applications in the classroom either. (she comes from an education family -her mother was a teacher and principal). -- usmgrad, 06:25:08 10/22/11 Sat [1]

[> I agree with Jenks. I do believe there is a place for technology (and there are seminars on classroom uses for it) but this is an example of education dollars not reaching classrooms. In our district, it's the PTAs who are buying this stuff, primarily for elementary teachers while the high school teachers have less. That being said, I can see technology advances simplifying work for administrators, allowing them to be "on the move" rather than sitting in offices. -- TH who should probably shut up on the subject..., 18:53:59 10/22/11 Sat [1]

[> [> Funny you should mention PTA, TH. They were always buying something "extra" which, in many caseswas needed, but when budgets are cut, supplies are totally limited, then tech gadgets are a luxury and not a necessity. Another sad event is the ridiculous belief by schools that all students have computers in their homes. Many families who are just trying to scratch by, can't afford one and need to drive to somewhere else to use one. I have been griping about this since before I retired. Paper and pencils, books (not Kindels), etc. can go a long way in education. -- jenks, 04:55:50 10/23/11 Sun [1]

[> I have no earthly idea - but where my son graduated from high school - a christian grades 1-12 school - an alumni recently donated an ipad to EVERY student stating the value of the children using modern technology in their daily lives. -- chris k, 08:44:40 10/23/11 Sun [1]

[> I would *love* to have an iPad! And I am seeing more and more uses for my work, where it would be practical and efficient to have one. However, I cannot really see what use it would be in a school setting. Unless the school is set up so technologically advanced that they have wireless networks, smart boards etc etc, so that the iPad would be used to transfer a student's work to the smart board to share with classmates etc. -- Colie, 08:34:13 10/24/11 Mon [1]

[> [> Actually our schools are wireless and most classrooms have smart boards. One of the districts down the coast received a grant to purchase e-readers. The 9th graders now have no textbooks, it's all on a e-readers How have you seen an ipad used or how would you like to use one in the workplace?. -- usmgrad, 10:09:13 10/24/11 Mon [1]

[> [> [> Mostly for convenience/practicality reasons. For example, I recently went on a week-long business trip to Germany where we took about 90 customers on a tour. I had organized it and accompanied the group. Had to carry a laptop with me to update info at the hotel etc, then carried a fat heavy folder with me at all times that held all info in print (ie guest lists, directions, routes etc). An iPad would have been great to have all info in file format with me at all times, while being able to check things online. Have everything in one location that's lightweight and convenient. -- Colie, 19:39:03 10/24/11 Mon [1]

[> [> [> [> I can see it used there, smaller than a laptop, less cumbersome than a file folder but bigger than an iphone. School applications that have been considered on the admin side - being able to see student's schedules, real time attendance, emergency contact info. In addition to using them at inclass room teacher evaluations, notes at meetings. -- usmgrad, 04:43:03 10/25/11 Tue [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Yes I can see how it would serve many purposes from an administrative side, making you more flexible and mobile, having all your information at a glance as well as changeable . As for students, I could imagine that in our fast-paced times where they are introduced to TVs and technology so early on, their attention span as well as ability and way to learn change from the ways we learned. Maybe the kiddies *need* to be taught in ways that embrace this new environment. I would love to see some studies where it's been tested in school settings as to what effects it truly had in a classroom. -- Colie, 09:18:50 10/26/11 Wed [1]
