I think the death of Natasha Richardson is a crying shame. My heart goes out to her husband and young sons.

that said - I heard a report where she wasn't wearing a helmet. I don't remember people wearing helmets to ski.

The report said - fifty people a year die from skiing accidents and maybe it's time to mandate wearing helmets for skiing like for bicycles and motorcycles.

okay- I have no idea how many people a year go skiing - but I'm thinking based on the folks I saw on the slopes at ONE resort in one day - we have to be talking well into the hundreds of thousands if not millions - because fifty people have died they want to mandate wearing helmets?

Why don't we just mandate wearing helmets when you ride in a car - I'm sure that would save at least fifty lives a year - -

I'm thinking we've run a muck living in subtle fear. Wear a helmet or you could die riding your bike. Wear a seatbelt or you could die riding in a car. Carry insurance or you could die getting sick.

How did any of us baby boomers grow out of childhood without car seats, seat belts, helmets and insurance?

- Well, those that didn't aren't around to talk about it. ;) I'm grateful for my seatbelt and my airbags, and I don't think a bicyclist is losing much by putting on a helmet. Not to mention, to tie into the healthcare debate, that taxpayers/health care consumers save money when there are fewer accidents. But I agree that at some point, it's overkill. - Only a few weeks ago, two people crashed together while skiing in Austria - one of them died instantly. The case made news because the other person involved was a high-ranking German politician.         I have had this happen to me on other boards, it's unfortunate. But please don't let it stop you from posting. We need to hear all points of view -- that is what makes for a good discussion, or debate. Let's just be careful about the words we use to respond -- we can't hear the tone of voice etc, so writing becomes tricky. We certainly don't want or mean to insult anyone, I hope! - As long as those who are injured(preventable with a helmet) don't think that they can sue the ski resort. I don't think it should be a law but common sense would tell a person that it would be safer to wear one. I have watched a show called Ski Patrol on True TV and the accidents we don't hear about are incredibly more serious than we could ever know.   - I dunno Trish. I don't believe in God so if he calls too early, I'm not going without complaining vociferously! But to borrow a believer's "ism", God helps those who help themselves. Safety measures for our more extreme lifestyles, have saved many people from major injuries or death. These measures have allowed modern generations to enjoy sports and activities that only professionals engaged in in the past. When I was a kid, the only thing I owned on wheels was my dollies' pram...LOL. On the street I lived, only one household had a car.     - I agree with you Cece. I agree that helmets help and so do most other safety measures but you cant put all your faith in those things. As I said I have seen many people die even though they wore helmets while riding bicycles or wearing a seatbelt while riding in car.   - Wearing helmet or a seatbelt doesnt necessarily save you either. I have seen just as many people just as dead with them as without them. A 4 year old hit by a car will most likely die with or without a helmet. A man whose car is obliterated by a Hummer is just as dead wearing a seatbelt as without it. - When I asked my neurosurgeon if I could go skiing again after my surgery, he groaned "NO!" Without overreacting, when we DO place ourselves in dangerous situations, it is our responsibility to ourselves and our FAMILIES to do so safely. If that means wearing a helmet, so be it. Big deal!   - I've always believed an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - common sense goes a long way - my kids never rode in the front seat because I considered it the death seat - yet I never had a car crash - but it seems to me that little by little more and more laws are being passed that control everyday aspects of our lives that shouldn't be anyone elses businesses and they're doing it in the name of fear - that's what bothers me - They're turning us into a fearful society - not that it's safer to do this but that if you don't you're bound to get killed.       - One last thing before I leave for good. Never did I say I was against seatbelts OR helmets. My kids always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, we also wear seatbelts. I was trying to say, that a lot of people in the US die anyway. Little kids feel invincible with those helmets on. They have no clue that they WONT always be saved because of it.         So, we need to agree that altho wearing helmets or seatbelts are no GUARANTEE, they can certainly be helpful. And altho we may not want legislation saying to do so, we should certainly all know our options! (And if I owned a ski resort, I would make helmets mandatory!)     - for instance - child safety seats - While it teeters on infringing on a parents right - I'm sad to agree there are too many stupid parents out there who would try to drive, and text with their infant in their lap - The poor infants wouldn't have a choice in that so society would simply feel better protecting them - As for the driving while texting - any laws against that would serve to protect the poor person who the idiot driving and texting plows into - it's the laws that remove choice from full grown adults in the name of 'for their own good' that bother me. I admit I don't post often, Like everybody else I'm busy. The boards are just not as fun as they were. The "blue" board is more a board of disapproval and seriousness.         The rule around here used to be never to drink while reading the HB or you would spew your Diet Coke all over your monitor. I seldom even smile while reading the HB much less laugh.         Shell, other posters find the HB funny as we used to. I think it's natural to feel nostalgic about the past, but that level of humour couldn't possibly last in the same way. Friendships evolve. I still consider the many long time posters my friends, even though the dynamics aren't the same. And there are many many posters who came in much later, who are important members of the community. But isn't life like that?         I've been thinking lately that the US should change the Constitution and only allow one 6 year term for presidents! As for here, I still check the boards most days. I enjoy both the Lifestyles and Entertainment boards since those boards tend to look at current events rather than the blue board, which really isn't too blue these days, which tends to look back. Sometimes I think that if HAE would join the cast of a really good show, we could lust, er ah, discuss him once again. I think my point was misunderstood - I may not have expressed myself well - but...

I'm not saying anything against helmets etc. I'm saying we need to be allowed to choose what is or isn't for our own good.

Now- here's a new twist - And please think before you answer so you don't unintentionally insult anyone- remember this is just discussing opinions - you don't HAVE to agree with anyone. not even me - : )

The supposed logic is - pass a law to protect skiers from the potential of a fatal head injury while skiing by taking away their choice to wear a helmet. Even though the odds of it happening to you are slim they exist.

So - why aren't we up in arms about passing a law to protect people from the fatal results of lung and other cancers while smoking by taking away their choice to buy cigarettes.

We all agree - there is a chance that you might have an accident or fall that might lead to a fatal injury while skiing - slim - but possible.

and pretty much everyone agrees that there's a chance if you're a smoker that you will get some form of cancer - slim or non existent chance for some - but more likely than hitting your head while skiing for others.

Personally - I think skiing is too dangerous for me - period- I'm not willing to risk twisting an ankle on the slopes - my choice. And I have no intention of smoking cigarettes - Lung cancer is horrible and sudden death and I'd rather pass on any increased odds -

So when did we decide as a society that we have to protect each individual for their own good? And worse -where do we draw the line. If it's the ski helmet law today what will be next?

And that was my point - sigh...

- Hmm...the problems you describe with electronic records have to do with inadequate or cut-rate hardware and IT support, not with electronic records per se. That's like saying all tires are bad and we should go back to wooden wheels, because someone used really crappy quality rubber in the manufacturing. Paper medical records get misplaced all the time. I would like to thank everyone (& I mean everyone) who listened to my worried diatribe about the system that has nearly killed my father. The whole point of it was that there are no advocates available for people at the hospitals or anywhere in our medical system as it stands now. Nurses and/or doctors are being forced to fill those positions often at risk to their jobs. Insurance companies don't want anyone to mess with their profit margins and the govt is unable/inable to inform the general public how incompetent they are. Natl healthcare? I don't know. And none of us really know until we have been in a system. Sometimes I long for the days of an old timie doctor who told you the truth and let you make the decision.
The fact is: It falls to the patient and their family to search out each alternative, each reason for a procedure, each possible outcome. The patient has to use all means to educate themselves and not let the system over-run them.
While I am not a far distance away from my parents, I let my mother handle things. She has always been strong on questioning the doctors. BUT this time she was overwhelmed with the seriousness of the problem. AND I did not recognize that soon enough.
SO it is my duty to question, dig into the forms, and see to it that my father & mother receive the best care they can. The system now is set up to diminish the amt of care they get as they age. THAT IS WRONG. But we will see this happen more and more as our population ages and there are not pay ins happening.
I am a babyboomer and we are just now hitting the age of retirement. As Marvin Zindler used to say: It's hell getting old!

My perpetually blessed daughter is now officially going to do the part of Sandy for the schools musical production Grease.

Last year she chose not to participate in Oklahoma - So we're very happy she gets to leave high school with a bang - so to speak.

Any Dallas folks- the plays May 1st and 2nd.

I can see her office now - in twenty years she'll be the all the little kids favorite doctor with Belle posters splattered all over the walls and the tweens favorite with Sandy everywhere!!

Some of the teachers young kids still come up to her and talk to her as though she's Belle.

I have to admit - this is a lot of fun for this Couldn't-carry-a-tune-to save-my-life mama.

I am so made at my father's cardiologist, I could spit nails. Dad is 86 and is about alert as they come. He moved from Houston to a small rural town of Caldwell. For doctors and such he has to go to College Station/Bryan. (inside) -- Dorothy in Houston, 19:08:58 03/11/09 Wed [34]
He had a triple bypass about 15 yrs ago. 6 yrs ago his Houston cardiologist told him that he needed a pacemaker. He is stubborn so he put it off till it was almost too late. Finally agreed to one this July, 2008 because his country doctor told him that without he would just go to sleep permanently. Got it done but has had trouble ever since. TODAY, they replaced the DEFECTIVE CHINESE ONE with a new one (made USA). When I questioned them about the defective one, they told me that it was the one that Medicare had approved for a man his age!!!!! What does his age have to do with it? They don't put the good stuff on people that are over 80 because they figure they are short timers anyways. P...sed me off to no end. They never even gave my father the opportunity to make a decision. They never even asked if he wanted to pay for a better one. OUR MEDICAL SYSTEM SUCKS!!!!! Hope O can do something with it.

- I know what you mean, my father will be 84 on April 1. He was diagnosed last your with prostate cancel. When I asked what they were going to do about it, I was told nothing because he is over 75. Medicare and medicaid is not only screwing over the patients, they are screwing over the doctors.     - As a former DME (durable medical equipment) case manager, I can tell you there are a lot of things Medicare WONT approve. They will only pay half of what is charged for ANY medical equipment. Take for example a walker. We would but them for 85.00 from our supplier. We marker them up to 110.00 to cover shipping and paperwork for filing insurance etc. Medicare would pay 82.50 for a walker. I started at the orthopedic surgeon because I thought I re-injured my ankle. I had a torn peroneal tendon about 4 years ago. had the surgery for that and was off work for 8 long weeks and was no weight bearing. I was truly more concerned about that. When I went back for my follow up, I just mentioned that I had hurt my shoulder and thought I tore my rotator cuff. It's my right shoulder and I am right handed, nice isn't it? They had me see another PA that day instead of the ortho doc. He was clueless and still is.

I have been inj therapy now for 6 weeks and am looking forward to another 6 weeks. The orthopedic surgeon I saw yesterday told me that I have a long way to go, that this was only beginning. He injected my shoulder and put me on prednisone for 10 days and then every other day. We'll see how that works. I just want to sleep at night. I slept in a recliner last night. I also can't take any NSAIDS either, they make my ears ring.

Thanks for the advice. Just knowing that someone else has gone through what I am going through is helpful.

As a side note. This makes it very hard to do any vag exams!

I did a really stupid thing just before Christmas. My arm got caught on the door of our laundry shoot while I was multitasking. I took some kitchen towels,and put them down the shoot while I was walking past the darn thing. My body kept walking, but my arm didn't come with me. I thought I tore my rotator cuff because I felt it pop. So, I go to the orthopedic surgeon (saw his Physician Assistant first for two visits). Today, I finally saw the physician, had yet another x-ray, took my told MRI disc with me. He me that I did not have anytears, but a frozen shoulder. He said that is common in people who are also hypothyroid (which I am). Now I have to go to physical therapy 3-5 times a week for six weeks, that is on top of the last 6 weeks of PT that I have been doing twice a week.

They gave me a steroid injection right into the joint. If nothing else works, he said that he can make my shoulder completely numb while the therapist mmanipulates the shoulder sho it can work again OR he can do surgery on it. I would be off for at least 6 weeks.

I really don't like this at all, but it is starting to affect my job and I haven't had a decent nights sleep since I injured it.

Does anyone know of some homeopatic remedy that I could use to also help the healing process. I have also been told that this is a very long process...anaywhere from 6-12 months on average. I may not be able to keep up the therapy.

My other piece of advice, stay away from laundry shoots, especially when you're multitasking!

- I have no advice, just sympathy. I am hypothyroid (well potentially as it's under control with daily synthroid.) I didn't know it could affect such things as shoulder probs. I did have a rotator cuff problem that severly curtailed my career as a scarecrow. I couldn't move my arm backwards, or take a jacket off, without great pain. It lasted about 9 months and then disappeared. I didn't take any meds at all.
