Update on the eaglets -- Sunset, 21:45:46 05/10/11 Tue [4]
The three eaglets that were removed from their nest after momma eagle was killed by an airplane are doing very well at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. They weigh between 7 to 9 lbs already.

On 5/1/11, The Native American drum group Four Rivers Drum played a memorial concert at Norfolk Botanical Garden in tribute to the female eagle. The group performed an "Eagle Calling Song," and other memorial songs to the female eagle and other selections to honor the male eagle. Hundreds turned out for the event. There is going to be a memorial bench and plague to celebrate the beloved female eagle. Ceremony date will be coordinated with the eaglets� release into the wild sometime in August. Momma eagle left with a legacy that will carry on by her offsprings for many years into the future.

I still feel sad thinking about the scenes of papa eagle returning to the empty nest with a fish with intention to feed the eaglets. He looked so confused and lost. Eventually he ate a little bit of the fish and flew off. He came back to the nest a few hours later. Fish was still thee but no mate and no eaglets. Finally he appeared to realize that his family wasn�t going to be there any more. He took the fish and flew away. Watching below video with the song still bring tears to my eyes.

I definitely think he mourned the loss of his mate of 8 years and his babies but not the way human do. His instincts would kick in and he would move on. Since then, he has been seen flying over the lake, sitting in his favorite tree and doing his eagle thing. Experts said he will certainly find a new mate before the next breeding season. He may even bring the new mate back to the garden for the new season because that is his territory. Life goes on!

Good thing did come out from this tragedy. Fans of the eagle family voted both Wildlife Center of Virginia and Norfolk Botanical Garden Society into the top 100 charities and each received $25,000 from Chase Community Living Program. The next voting round starts on 5/19/11. The 25 charities that receive the most votes from facebook users will receive between $20,000 and $500,000.

Tragic news about mama eagle -- Sunset, 15:34:28 04/26/11 Tue [7]
I have been watching the bald eagle nest at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Virginia each day since The Chief posted the link last month. It was wonderful to see the three eaglets growing up under the parents' care. Unfortunately mama eagle was struck and killed by an airplane this morning. Like thousands of other viewers, I'm deeply saddened by this tragedy.

    - Emory & Henry College. About 20 miles north of Bristol & 3 miles south of Glade Springs on I-81, which is where the tornado touched down. We went down there yesterday & I have never seen destruction like that. It looked like pictures I have seen of the WWII atomic bomb attack. Semis tossed like matchsticks & crumpled. A trailer (where 1 person died) smashed into little pieces against the hillside. The front of a concrete veterinary clinic completely gone. A church blown away with only the foundation standing. I received this in an email today- I have no idea if it's true or not - but I wouldn't be surprised if something like this weren't true somewhere at some point - : )

Augusta, GA

Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Georgia , told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket... When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door.

Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe.

After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment.

The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw... injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine.

- I have this theory- folks who live together before they get married have really crappy odds of staying married. Psychologists say your chances of divorce increase by 50% (that's 50 % more than the already stinky odds) - but I honestly don't know anyone who lived together first and is still married.   - You know me. My DH and I lived together for six years at a time when it just wasn't done by middle class people. Then we got married Dec. 31 1976, and are still married 34 yrs later. However, I'm not recommending living together casually. I believe in the committment of marriage. As for William and Kate, they appear to be in love, and have not jumped into this. - I haven't been following it much, but I do think they are an adorable couple. They seem to be *friends* as well as "in love", so that will hold them in good stead. Charles & Di were never "friends", and their marriage was "coordinated" (if not "arranged"). - I think they are a beautiful couple and really seem to be in love. I think they will make it. It appears that Prince William, in an interview I saw recently, is remembering his mother. I love that he gave Kate, Diana's engagement ring, so his mother wouldnt be forgotten, that she would have her part in their engagement and marriage. I think it speaks well of Prince William that he honors both his mother and his father, in spite of all the bitterness that came before during and after their divorce. Good for him, good for them! - The wedding was beautiful! Kate looked radiant and Wills looked relaxed and happy. DH and I partied with the street and loved it. People here seemed happy for another day off & an excuse to party, but were pleasantly surprised by how sweet and unprententious the wedding was and it's like it has rejuvenated interest in the royals. OTOH, everyone was so drunk last night and it is eerily quiet on the street this morning, so I may have to wait awhile before I ask them their TRUE opinions. I heard them all till the wee hours. Last Saturday morning, when I got out of bed, my room was spinning. I didn't think too much about it since I swent tobed late after working 3-11. I was still dizzy after eating breakfast and by noon, I was vomiting and couldnot walk straight. All I could do was lay onthe sofa. I called off from work that evening since I could not stand upo. The vomiting and nausea continued all evening. The same happened on Sunday. By Monday, I was still dizzy, although I had no nausea. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with labyrinthitis. I was worrind that I was having a stroke or any other kind of major disease.

It's now Thursday and I am still dizzy. I don't have the vopmiting anymore, but am still nauseated at tiome. This is just awful. I don't have the sick time accrued anymore lsince I fractured my foot last summer, so I can't even stay at home. The doctor told me that I really should not drive, but I have to. I am taking an antihistamine during the day and Antivert at night (that's because it makes you so very tired and you can't drive).

If anyone has ever had it, how long does it last and how did you deal with the constant dizziness? I was told that it could last as long as 6 weeks. If it does, it's going to be the death of me! Not really, but you know how it goes.

- I would get anything and everything checked - blood work, scans for virus and bacterial infections, an MRI and even chiropractic. - I feel so sorry for , this is miserable,no personal experience of ti , but my daughters's sister-in-law had it last fall, she was unable to work for abou t 4-5 weeeks- evet she recovered and to my knowledge has remained free from a recurrence . Was reading about the wildfires in Texas and just wonder if any of the Texas Tarts were effected by them. Things like this remind you how little control over mother nature we really have.

- Our family had a reunion last June at a ranch in Loveland Colorado, about an hour north of Denver and slightly west. The setting was gorgeous, and the weather was beautiful. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They did a great job of keeping the children entertained and busy. I think the worst thing about it was the cost. The Hits just keep on coming. My Husband, Mike got laid off from work yesterday. It's the first time he has been without a job in 40 yrs. He's wondering around trying to figure out what to do next. He is a diabetic and has depression. He's afraid no one will hire him at 59 yrs. with his health problems. But, he did up date his resume today and started sending them out. We both need health insurance. I'm on Disiably after working for 38 yrs. Life has been tough since 2007 and doesn't seem to be getting better. Thanks for listening to me vent. -- Cathy F. - yeah and they keep trying to tell us the economy is in an upswing- I can't help but wonder what world do the people making these calls live in - anyhow- it is a frightening thought but I've had my neighbor in sales lose his job a couple of times at over 50 years of age and both times he got good replacement work - took several months each time - but he did get it - so there are a few folks out there who appreciate the experience - it's just a matter of finding them. Sorry aboutthis need to vent, but my husband has had his asthma flare up this last week. He went to the doctor on Tuesday. He was given a prescription for an inhaler, and a z-pack, and a sample of Advair. NO STEROIDS! His blood sugar was up and the nurse practitioner did not want to give it to him.

I called the office at 0900 today and they called me back at 0940 to say that this CRNP wanted to talk to my husband before he came into the office, so another hour went by and two more phone calls, one from him and one from me.

The CRNP called him back and said that she could not see him until after 3pm so it is probably better for him to go the ER to be seen.

Now, tell me why did this have to occur. We just wanted to get an apppointment to see the MD, not the CRNP (one of my closest friends is our usual Nurse Practitioner, but she is out of state visiting her son and his new baby). The bottom line is that I now have to take him to the ER where I work. We'll probably be there for hours and hours ass our ED is the slowest place in the world.

All we wanted was for him to get the steroids that he needs to clear this up before it got too bad and to have his insulin increased to compensate for the steroids. Not a hard request...one appointment.

Thanks for letting me vent....I'm feeling better now.

I'll talk again sometime when we get out of the ER...could be in a couple of hours or next week!

- It was a physician issue. He FINALLY was able to see the nurse practitioner Thursday afternoon. She did not give him any steroids, just gave him cough medicine with codeine and albuterol for his nebulizer. So, after 5 days on the z-pack, he seems a tad bit better, but still coughing and can't talk without coughing. This CRNP is a true waste. Didn't take any time with him. He was in and out in less than 5 minutes. My friend who is another CRNP there will hear about this and we will never go to this particular person again. - This is an annual event, with the Eagle 'parents' delivering at least three eggs. Our newscasters keep us updated, as well as allowing access via the "Eagle Cam". Think it was two years ago that one of the Eaglets arrived with a tumor on its little beak. Of course, it was removed from the nest when it was a few weeks old, the tumor was successfully removed, and the Eagle was released. (Don't recall the details of where the baby was treated.) Thank you so much for taking the time to vote for Kassidy's movie as she never would have made it to the finals without your support. Her movie was chosen as one of the top three movies in the high school category. As a result she gets to attend the Dallas International Film Festival and "walk the red carpet" and be presented as one of the high school finalists. At the awards evening she will find out if she came in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. (If she gets 3rd place her school will receive $2,500, if she gets 2nd place her school will receive $5,000, and if she gets 1st place her school with get $7,500 - so her school will receive at least $2,500 which is very, very exciting.)

    - I've never had sciatica, but I know the pain my husband was in when he had it about 5 yrs ago. He walked like an old man, and I had to help him. Fortunatly, it went away after a few days and it hasn't returned. And I hear you about not sleeping. When that happens (like last Thursday,) I get up and get more work done than in the day. Scholarship Update -- dg, 22:12:55 03/04/11 Fri [9]
I received an E-mail today informing me that I was not chosen as a recepient for the scholarship I applied for. I'll admit, I'm disappointed. Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers. I guess that maybe there is something better for me down the road.

- Dang! Keep your spirits up, dg. Both my daughters applied and didn't get scholarships, but I was super proud they applied. Eventually, the one got an internship which she ended up getting paid for, which wasn't the case when she started.
