Subject: Life is throwing lemons again

My 13 year old was diagnosed with scoliosis last month. I noticed it while she was trying on her first 2 piece swimsuit.
She went last week and they did a plaster cast of her upper body. It was sent to Florida to be made into a specialed brace that she will have to wear 23 hrs a day for about 2 years. They will have to redesign and remake a new everytime she grows more than 2 inches or so. At 5'4 now she apparently, according to her growth markers, has 6-8 inches left to grow.
She seems okay with it right now but she isnt in the brace yet so I pray she adjusts to it quickly. I personally cant imagine trying to sleep in something so uncomfortable and restricting.
Most school nurses check at 5th and 8th grades but it can happen quickly in between and can be caught ahead of time.

Anyone have experience with Scoliosis to share?

[> Wow. I feel for her. But at least she'll get it overwith before she is driving, dating, etc. Inside -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 18:54:19 07/20/11 Wed [1]

I was diagnosed with very mild scoliosis as a teenager, but the doctor said that since I was finished growing, and it wasn't getting worse, and I wasn't experiencing any pain or other problems, to not bother with treating it at all, so we didn't. My back is a little crooked, and one hip is slightly higher than the other, but it really isn't noticeable to anyone but me unless you're really looking for it. I guess I could consider myself lucky!

I remember have had one. All in a sort of plastic and with binding/clamping screw.Several.Couldn't move and breathe w/it.A real horror.

I was and am in the same case as JAG Junkie.

I hope for your daughter than now surgical corset are less painful than the ones back in the middle of the 90's.

Bon courage

[> I hope everything goes as well as possible for your daughter. This is such a worry for you, so it is hopeful to hear that both JJ and Laurence got through it okay. I know there are varying degrees of the condition, but here is a list of famous people with scoliosis and it doesn't seem to have held them back. Click here. [> I didn't have problems myself, but I was a huge Judy Blume fan and I know I read her book "Deenie" more than once. It's about a teen girl diagnosed w/scoliosis, has to wear the brace, etc. I think you should get it for her. Amazon link inside... -- The Chief, 19:24:46 07/21/11 Thu [1]

[> I worked as a medical assistant, years ago, with a pediatric ortho surgeon. I remember that we really got busy after the normal screening times at school. You've cought it early enough, so that it might not interfere too much, when her social life really picks up, in high school. I know its can be tough, but it makes all the difference in the world, once shes out of the brace. Many of the parents threw "Out of the Brace" parties.(We got pictures, lol) Its sounds lilke your girl has a good attitude going and that helps alot. Must've picked up that good attitude somewhere. ;) Good Luck. -- mkim, 12:26:07 07/24/11 Sun [1]
