I will have blogger's regret for this posting, but it has been bottled up for 2 years. Opening my mouth as I have several times is probably enough to get me put on a hit list, but like Dan, I am sick and tired of some of the things I have experienced. I am not the lone ranger with issues here.
Our family endured physical threats of intimidation on the road and frequent gunfire over a 2 year period. 6 months after it started, our dog was shot dead and found well into our front yard. We told the police who did it. We pursued our own investigation that took 8 months with a large reward, since then Chief Kreinhop explained that it was "only our dog" who was killed, so it was not a priority to pursue. I went to their office every 3 weeks to assure them it was important to us and that it must be addressed. I was also told by Chief Kreinhop that I should get a carry permit, as if this was to reassure us. I was 55 yrs. old with no gun experience and 2 children, who had also faced intimidation. Another deputy was friendly with this band of rowdies and chose not to report knowledge of the dog killing (witnesses state he had knowledge), and unwilling to accept that his little friends actions might be a danger to others. This deputy put me in fear of his badge and his bosses, because he did not support the law. He later displayed aggression in handling of his police vehicle while off duty with another witness. Not once in 8 months after our dog was killed did any deputy from Dearborn County come out to our home or drive down our road to consider our problem or look at our layout for safety except for the initial police report. I felt that Sheriff Lusby and Terry Van Winkle were more supportive than Chief Kreinhop. I told them that our local deputy had expressed his reluctance to "get involved" and he told me he had a "conflict with matters concerning his friends. I told Sheriff Lusby that we must rely only on State police due to this. Once we had a witness and version/affidavit of the dog killing, Sheriff helped us. Maj. Prarat swiftly completed the case under Sheriff's Kreinhop's request, but it took another 5 months to get it into court. Paperwork sat in the juvenile probation department for something like 6 weeks. I wondered at the time if there was an attempt to stall the paperwork to protect those responsible, since I have observed that this is a place full of friends and relations who cover up for one another. Intimidation started again during this wait when they thought they would not be punished. As far as I could discern, there was no indication that this boy had any "objective" credible psychological evaluation as mandated by the Court. He was not truthful in his based on court findings. He still kept possession of his guns. He did not go to jail to curb him for the 2 years of stress we have been through. He is still on our volunteer fire department. We are certain of more trouble after his probation. I rarely get through a day without stress reactions of some kind. We only have this sort of disclosure to protect us from this, since we now realize 911 is a joke.
Ashley Webb and Mark McCormack in Zoning enforcement helped us more than the police did. Ralph Thompson taught me to use our guns, and was available to support our family. There are many other good people in our system, so we also feel guilty of protecting the "group".
I feel badly that anyone is made to feel the sense of intimidation, but we clearly encountered limitations of the law on this, even with guns used illegally and other illegal acts. I don't approve of having to take this aggressive stance to protect my family, but if I keep quiet, no one will pay attention if trouble starts up again.
Dan is a man who feels strongly enough about things not being done as he thought they should be that he was willing to go to jail to be heard. His original issues still need to be brought out into the light of day in case there is validity there. What is wrong with this County that they are unwilling to own up to their actions. They try to sweep matters under the rug and ignore situations where there could be any nasty accountability or liability. Instead, they need to improve the small details and be respectful of their taxpayers so that emotions and frustrations don't spiral out of control. This is only half or less of problems we have had with the County not following it's own rules. Tired of a double standard.
Just once, it might be refreshing if any of these officials picked up a phone and made a reasonable attempt to correct problems or be friendly.
P.S. I have also been called a bitch in public by an official. I don't take offense because I have had to behave like one to get the job done.
