I do believe you have found your calling - ghost writer for Messrs John Watson and Bryan Barrett! How dare the man take an active interest in his own fate and demand the same from his court appointed lawyer. What did he expect to get for free? A real defense? Such men of courage, who stand and fight the powerful no matter the odds, deserve better treatment at the hands of the pennyless unwashed who benefit from their largess. Doesn't he know that he should sit quietly while his betters decide what his fate shall be?

Does it disturb you that one of the sheep won't stay with the flock to be shorn like the rest?

As to his methods that give you pause, given the forces aligned against him, I would say the only tool in his arsenal is complete disclosure. Though Lawyers (and Lawyers in Robes) are difficult to shame (they are, after all, superior beings), at some point the pressure of decent society can become too much to bear, even for them.
