Ava, while I tend to agree with you, in this case I think you may be indulging in wishful thinking. If you are right, well then, we don't have to believe that they are corrupt and willfully engaging in wanton abuse of their authority. Instead, they are simple victims of their own bad judgement, their own weakness, their own very human psychology that has tricked them into believing as they do.
I submit that this is actually corruption on top of corruption, a situation that started out as a corrupt attempt to shield a peer from being exposed. But they failed and misjudged who they were dealing with. The average person would have caved, cut their losses and tried to escape, but this time they hooked a fish that didn't want to get away. It wants to eat them. So now they can't let go because it will show them as corrupt. They must double down. They are all in. Corruption upon corruption, perversion of justice and abuse of authority, knowingly applied, in the hope that they can still win through.
They won't win. The facts are obvious to the casual observer.
My main fear is for Dan, particularly as he remains in their custody and at their mercy. Their final out, as the end game approaches, could be fatal for him. It all depends on how deep and wide the evil runs.
